Beware of What Lurks in the Shadows

Charges were set around the transit hub, the nest below it spewing forth another wave of rakghouls. They were fast buggers, but they wouldn’t be fast enough as the team pulled back up the tunnel, making sure to grab the BurstStreaks from their fallen comrades. The rakghouls were held up by the fresh meat at the hub and didn’t notice the charges set to explode until Taeli pressed the detonator.

Tons of rock, metal, and other debris fell on them, the fireball incinerating those monster there while sealing off the transit hub from the tunnel network. The falling debris also played a role in breaking through and destroying the nest, killing off the last rakghouls in this sector at least.

As cleanup began, orders were to burn the bodies of the creatures above, Taeli began issuing orders for a team to come in and set up permanent defenses, and recyclers to come in and restart mining. Little did anyone know, but a small black probe droid with a red eye had observed the entire event, recording all data from the fights.

The probe floated over to the first rakghoul killed, extracting the needed tissue and saliva samples for its mistress. Blood was drawn to be analyzed, and then the probe whizzed away to rendezvous with its creator.

“So how did they handle?” Taeli asked the new regional security chief with Venis being dead. The main room of the mine had been converted into a makeshift command center while the teams were put together to get the site up and running again. “The BurstStreaks I mean.”

“Never held a stronger blaster in all my time,” the older human male said. “Rate of fire and range are great, but something needs to be done about the gas canister system. I’d wager it’s around 300 shots per gas canister, maybe 250.”

“The price of the Sianium power cell,” Taeli said. “More power means less shots. We’ll come up with something though. The team on Jabiim will be glad to hear that their first design went well though.”

“Miss Raaf, Chief Uylir, we had an unidentified probe droid in the area,” one of the security officers said. “Not sure what it got, but we’re certain we appeared to just be a cleansing team. Wasn’t one of our probes either, seemed to be transmitting a unique code.”

“Sith?”

“Perhaps, but not any signal I’ve heard before that the Sith use,” the officer said.

“Well that could be a problem,” Taeli mumbled. “Any idea where it went?”

“None ma’am, we only caught it as it was leaving,” the officer replied. Taeli sighed at his answer, but it was to be expected. They were busy with other things, an unknown probe droid would have been the least of their worries.

“Let’s just get back to work … and double fortify this position.”
