Public Beyond the Wall

latest

It was the sunlight that woke Lori up first. Or at least that was the first thing that she noticed. The rays of light hit her closed eyelids once they peeked out from one of the passing clouds overhead. Then she noticed the wind; a gentle breeze that played with strands of her hair, causing some of them to tickle her face.

It was then that she opened her eyes and slowly sat up, taking in her surroundings. From what she could tell she was in some sort of large field. There were some trees and what looked like either buildings or a very tall wall.

Lori got to her feet, not knowing where she was or how she got there. The last that she recalled, she was in a market at a space port, but then it all went black. Or was it fuzzy? She couldn't remember which. It was all just so unclear.

There were others in the distance. But whether they were passed out like she was minutes ago or dead, Lori wasn't certain. A click was heard behind her ear and she felt a pinch on the back of her neck, like something was digging into her skin, causing her to drop to her knees. She brought a hand back to where the pain came from and felt a metallic device there. And as she tried to work her fingers around it to try to take it off, an electric current shot through her nervous system, dropping her fully to the ground in convulsions.

It took a few minutes for her to regain control of herself, for her breathing and heartbeat to return to normal. She wiped the sweat off her brow and slowly got to her feet once more.

"Oh great...this is just....great."

When you fall asleep in the crawl spaces of starships there is a certain amount of background noise that’s expected. The hum of the engines, the creaks of the ship settling in travel. It was the silence that Moira noticed first. Just a light breeze was the only thing that offered a background noise here.

After sometime of listening to the breeze go through the tree she opened her eyes. Moira definitely was not in a crawl space anymore. There was green all around her, a large field closed off by massive walls. It felt like she was in some cage, closed in by some unknown force. As her eyes adjusted further she could see other people.

Click

It was a mechanical click, out of place for a field with light tree cover. The noise also came from behind her. That was when she noticed the strange weight on the back of her neck. She then noticed how the weight bit her, driving what could only be described as metal pincers into her neck. She gave a small cry of pain and brought a hand to her neck. Her hands were met with some device that seems to have dug itself into her. She thought about ripping it off, but after a bit of Precognition, pulling it out resulted in pain and losing her vision. Whether that was from being blinded or dead, she didn’t know.

She got to her feet and let out a sigh. “Why couldn’t I wake up somewhere normal for once.” she muttered as she started walking over to a nearby group of people. Maybe someone else knew what was going on?

Lori heard the cry of pain coming from Moira Connell Moira Connell 's direction. No doubt she had just attempted the same thing. Whatever was on the back of their necks, it wasn't going to come off easily. Yet what it's purpose was, she didn't know.

The girl started towards her and so Lori went on to meet her halfway. She wasn't that keen on using the Force, so she didn't pick up on her sudden disconnection to it once the device clicked. Those that were more trained in the ways of the Force would of been able to pick up on it though.

"Hey...you don't happen to remember how you got here, do you? Or know where we are? Because I don't...At all."

As the two of the newcomers gazed around the general area. A slight sound of a Zither was heard a few hundred feet away. The gentle plucking of strings which filled the air with this calming sense of musical ambiance. It seemed to mix quite pleasantly with the gentle warm breeze which filled the valley. If anyone cared to even look to where this music was coming from. They could spot a single Black-Furred Feline Figure sitting at the foot of a tree cross-legged, with a Zither instrument sitting in her lap. Behind and to her side sat a multitude of Traditional Cathar paraphernalia. A ornately decorated rug handing off a tree branch here to shield from the sun. A mat she was sitting on to protect her large flowing pants from being dirtied with dust and dirt. Maybe a small Hooka Smoker sitting next to her knee

This black-furred Cathar seemed to be sitting alone. Her voice quiet as she seemed to be singing to herself. Or to the trees themselves. It was a pleasant sort of voice. One of honey, with plenty of range for alteration. Obviously, this level of musical prowess took quite some time to hone. Even from the distance where they stood Loreena Arenais-Valhoun Loreena Arenais-Valhoun and Moira Connell Moira Connell a small silver bowl decorated with a Dancing Cathar was visible sitting in-front of this odd musician. Perhaps it would be a decent idea to investigate? Perhaps she was a local, or native to this region.

The world around seemed to be completely untouched by any sort of habitation. As far as they eye could see, not a single road, cut down tree, or signs of civilization were visible. Only a endless sea of trees and natural clearings. A beautiful landscape. Untouched by the chaotic Galaxy. Only the lone singer was the only sign of anyone other than the Outlanders visible.

Red sat up, sharp, attentive, and ready to kill any hostiles.

That seemed to be every way he woke up, but this time he really needed it, for once.

He looked around. Where was he? He had no idea. Last thing he knew, he was on a space station doing his usual special forces work. He was in a field. So... that meant he was actually on a planet now. When did that happen?

Red noticed others in the distance. Well, at least he wasn't alone. Red noticed he was in his battle armor. So, that did mean he was taken from being on assignment, huh? Alright. Weird. His helmet lay next to him.

Red took inventory, but then, he heard a click behind him, and felt a biting sensation. His hand instinctively drifted to his neck, and he felt the metal device. That wasn't good. Really not good. Red decided against trying to take it off, for it may cause something worse to happen.

Red got up, grabbed his helmet, and walked towards the two closet people. As he got closer and closer, he started to recognize one of them. Was that... Loreena Arenais-Valhoun Loreena Arenais-Valhoun ?! What was she doing here? He hadn't seen her in a while.

He approached the two. "Well, this is a surprise." Red said. "Hey, Loreena."

Ghozza’s breathing was slow and deep. The sun warmed his skin as he sat toward the center of the clearing, away from any trees or shade. One could see he was locked in a state of meditation, seated as he was with legs crossed and eyes closed facing towards the sun. For several minutes continued to sit motionlessly save for the slow rhythm of his breathing. Inhale. Leaves strolled by carried in the wind. Exhale. His Gi rustled in the breeze.

His mind was focused on retracing the events that lead him here. He remembered being on Kashyyyk, attempting to act as an ambassador between his people and the Wookiees, A failed endeavor that cost him his left arm below the elbow. He could recall nothing else afterward. Ghozza tried to focus and call upon the force for aid but it was no use. The more he tried the more the void stone imbued device at the back of his neck protested.

Ghozza rubbed his newly grown arm. The green scales were much lighter than the rest of his body showed that the limb was fresh. Clearly, some time had passed since Kashyyyk but he could only guess it at how long. Three weeks, maybe four? He sighed. There was no use worrying about it now. He stood up and looked around to see who else if any had awoken. In the distance he could see a few people moving and what appeared to be a rug hanging from a tree branch. It was strange, aside from his Gi, Ghozza had awoken here with nothing. He walked towards the branch and as he grew closer the sounds of zither strings and song filled the air.

He approached the Cathar as she plucked away at her strings. If Ghozza had eyebrows they would be raised at the items that surrounded the Cathar. A hookah, a bowl, rug, zither, and a multitude of other items. Mentally he questioned how it was she came to possess these belongings. Was she a native to this place, and if so, what did she know about the device firmly rooted in Ghozza’s neck?

Tapping his bare feet to the tune of the music Ghozza waited for the Cathar’s song to end. He was in no rush to find answers. Even if he could not use the force he trusted it would guide him nonetheless.

The ladies' words took Moira by surprise, which didn’t happen often. How come she didn’t see this conversation. She looked ahead in time and was greeted with static. Why was she greeted by static? That wasn’t good. She tried to look again but more static. She looked up to Loreena nervously, she wasn’t sure what to say. She stood there trapped in the present. She could feel her heart rate increase as the panic was setting in. She stammered out what Moira hoped was a greeting. Wait, what did the girl say?

“Uuuuh, yup”

Wait, no. that's not what she should’ve said. There was a pause as she put her thoughts together. This girl was probably trying to make small talk or asking if she knew where they were. Moira took a deep breath.

“No, I do not remember. At all. I have no idea how i got here.” She spoke carefully, trying not to make mistakes. “I think this device on our necks stop the force, I uhhh, am having trouble with it.”

She took a deep breath, that wasn’t so bad. In an attempt to distract herself she looked around at the field. A motley crew of beings had woken up. There was a Cathar playing some instrument. The instrument itself sounded strange but the music sounded well enough. There was a Trandoshan nearby the bard listening intently. He was dressed in some traditional wear, in contrast to the street clothes Moira was wearing, or the battle armor of the guy who walked up to Loreena. He looked human except for the bright red hair, right down to the roots even. Sure, her’s was dyed blue but she got the notion this wasn’t dyed.

So she’d stand and listen to the strange music and try to tolerate the present. She couldn’t see the future and that was ok, and if she kept lying to herself she’d believe it at some point, right?

Leenic's eyes shot open and blinked rapidly when they were met with the sun. Despite the tint on his visor, it still hurt to look directly at the sun. He glanced around and reached down to his holster. Right, his blaster had been severed by that crazy Jedi-woman and he had been on his way to purchase a new one. He looked over next to him, and the sight caused him to sit straight up. This wasn't Kashyyyk, not by a long shot, and where was his ship? Last thing he remembered was waving goodbye to his brothers-in-arms from his tribe and boarding his ship. He reached down to his boot and was relived that his vibro knife was still with him, one weapon out of his arsenal.

He left it in its sheath for now, and stood up, looking around to asses his situation. He saw the woman surrounded by a small group of people. He decided to reach out with the force to see how many of them were force-sensitive, but soon found that he couldn't use it for some reason. "What?" He said, looking around for something that could be interfering with his abilities. Then he heard it: a slight beeping from the back of his head. He took one of his hands and ran it across his neck, soon hitting a small metal object that seemed to be implanted in him. He tugged at it, but that only resulted in a sharp pain and his head to reflexively snap back.

Shaking his head, he made his way towards the group and he soon recognized
Subject 73 Red Subject 73 Red 's distinctive armor. He arrived shortly thereafter, and walked up behind the group. "So, do any of y'all know where this place is?" He said, slipping a hand under his helmet and rubbing his nose. "Or am I just REALLY drunk right now?"

Val continued to string the Zither as she hardly took notice of the Big Lumbering Lizard approach. She continued to sing quietly to herself even when the shadow of the Lizard eclipsed her hands and body. She only uttered the last words to her song as she plucked at the Zither's strings once more.

"Our vagabond bazaar~"

She had finished her song, and the pleasant twinging of the Zither came to a close. If Ghozza J'iira Ghozza J'iira even cared to notice. The Cathar's long Black hair was clearly tied up behind her head in a bun, and was clearly dreadlocked. Customary of a far Eastern Cathar. Unlike the conventional Western Cathar, the woman that sat cross-legged looked many levels more Feline than even the most feral looking Cathar. She had a long Cat-Like Tail, and had the customary combed facial features of a normal house-cat. Her short ears poked through the top of her head and they seemed to be intently listening to something. Unknown to the ears of Ghozza, but not to her. She wore a hood, yet it was draped neatly against the back of her neck.

She looked quiet rich, her clothes echoed this wealthy-status. But if street-smarts were used, this woman was likely the poorest among them. Barely surviving off the meager sums her singing gets her. The Silver bowl infront of her was completely empty. And oddly enough... This woman appeared to be the thieving sort. One that could scam you out of your boots.

She opened her eyes and peered upward at the Massive Lizard standing before her. As she moved her head up, there would be a pretty obvious "Lack" of any sort of neck-device that the rest of the outlanders had. She squinted at him briefly, before sizing him up from head to toe. Of course, if Ghozza knew anything about Eastern Cathars... they were always looking for something to steal. Best to guard his purse.

Her eyes became visible. A light-lime green color which encircled a iris. Quite beautiful to look it, yet hauntingly suspicious. She muttered something before looking up again and talking.

"Who are you? How did you get here? This one believed herself to be alone in this Forest of Woes."
There was something characteristic about how she talked. Heavily accented, and moderately gravelly like the dunes of South Cathar, however young sounding and quite intoxicating to those who thought Cathars beautiful. Judging by the amount of suger-crystals in glass containers around her. This Cathar had one heck of a sweet tooth... The Hookah was also recently smoked, judging by the odor of some sort of Opiod scent which filled the air. Directly after speaking, this Cat took the tip of the Hookah hose, and briefly sucked on it. Before blowing out a cloud of dull-purple colored smoke from her nose.

Moira Connell Moira Connell seemed to be struggling with something. Lori was not yet aware about her Force abilities and how not having access was bothering her. And she also was unaware of where they were or how they got there. That posed a problem.

Seeing someone approach from the corner of her eye, Lori grinned when she recognized Subject 73 Red Subject 73 Red and his armour. "Red!! How did you--Nevermind! You don't know either. But wow, what are the odds? Is Pitt here too?" The fiesty little droid was great at easing tensions.

Their little group was getting larger. Leenic Ellsil Leenic Ellsil walked up to them next. Lori didn't recall seeing him while she lived and trained under her Mandalorian family. But there were many that she didn't know. She gave him a nod in greeting. "I don't think any of us know what's going on or where we are. It's....weird..."

And was she hearing music? Lori looked to see where it was coming from, spotting some weird makeshift tent in the distance with Val Vijah sitting there and Ghozza J'iira Ghozza J'iira standing by. "Maybe they know?"

Horns started sounding, blasting a loud alarm that echoed throughout the field, followed by the scraping of cement on cement. A massive door was opening. Lori's jaw just dropped as she simply stared at it.

Just then a woman broke from the treeline and ran into the opening. She was visibly armed, and either didn't notice the new arrivals, or she just didn't care.

"What the....?"

Red smiled. "Yeah, it's weird, with everything happening. No one here knows what's going on, or how we even got here." Red replied to her. "Yeah, Pitt's here too." He said. Then, the little pit droid unlatched from the slot on his back. Pitt sprang out, looking around.

Pitt, if he could show facial expressions, would show extremely confused. Then, he noticed Loreena.
"Hey, Loreena! What's up!" He said, chipper as ever.

Pitt turned to Red.
"Where are we?" He asked.

Red shrugged,
"No idea. Your guess is as good as mine." He replied.

Red turned to the other girl, the one with the blue hair. With her hair color and eye color, she could pass off as an experiment, as all of the experiments from Red's world mostly had some bizarre color of hair, as the scientists did it to help identify the experiments. Very little of the experiments had normal colored hair. Of course, Red could always dye his hair to a normal color, but mostly he kept it it's natural red color.
"Nice hair." He told the girl.

He then turned to the newest newcomer. He personally knew this Mandalorian. "None of us have any idea where we are." He answered.

"So... I'm guessing everyone here with Force abilities is having trouble connecting through the Force? I'm coming up blank, I can't feel anything through the Force." Red told them.

Then, the loud alarms started blaring, and the sound of scraping caught Red's attention. Red turned, and noticed the massive door. Interesting, very interesting. Red also noticed the woman with the weapons running.
"Okay..." Red said, actually caught off guard and genuinely puzzled for a second.

The Cathar spoke quickly. Before he had was even sure the song had ended Ghozza found himself bombarded by the very questions he meant to ask. He took a moment to regain control of the situation.

“I’m Ghozza J’iira. Unfortunately, I do not have the answer to your question. I was going to ask you the same things. How did you come to arrive at this ‘Forrest of Woes’?” he spoke calmly with the tone of a diplomat. Now was not the time for his imposing stature to take the stage. He merely wanted answers.

In the surrounding area, he could see several other humanoids had awoken and were beginning their own quest for answers. Had this been any other day Ghozza would have reached out with the force to see if anyone around him was an immediate threat, but this was not any other day. The device at his neck hummed as if to refute him in even considering the force.

“By the way, I see that you don’t have one of these-” He pointed to the device latched to his neck “-on you. Would you know anything about th-“

Horns blasted, cutting Ghozza off as he spoke. There was a loud grinding as a segment of the wall split. A humanoid form sprinted towards the opening. Ghozza was curious as to what was going on be he already had several mysteries to deal with. He resolved to figure out what was through the newly formed doorway later and turned back to the Cathar.

“Does that happen regularly? My apologies for the many questions. As I’m sure you understand this situation is quite a bit stressful, to say the least.”

Even on a world of such untouched temperate beauty, it seemed technology was impossible to escape. Boots connected with a cold, metal floor as Colonel Vyktor Orrin moved through the corridors of the hidden control facility that provided near complete control over the entire world this seemingly random assortment of individuals found themselves on. The horrid sound of his breathing was the first thing to fill the control room and cause the multitude of technicians to suddenly rise from their stations to stand at attention, though the Colonel simply waved them off, allowing them to return their work as he approached the central console. A few individuals, all scientists by the look of them, observed the new arrivals from an overhead view, each of the individuals that had not gathered together having their vitals monitored and placed on screen, though the Cathar was not monitored due to her lack of a restraint device.

"Gentlemen" the Colonel began "Have our guests finally found each other?"

One of the men turned his pale face to view his commanding officer, the slightest hint of a smile on his sunken face. "Yes sir, all individuals accounted for. Overwatch has been established and we can monitor their every move, even their conversations are not private."

Vyktor's mask turned slightly to view each of the carefully selected individuals, all assigned a new military code for better communication and monitoring

Loreena Arenais-Valhoun Loreena Arenais-Valhoun Code: Rebel
Moira Connell Moira Connell Code: Vagabond
Val Vijah Code: Freedom
Subject 73 Red Subject 73 Red Code: Operative
Leenic Ellsil Leenic Ellsil Code: Hunter
Ghozza J'iira Ghozza J'iira Code: Beast

"I see the shrouds are operating effectively" Vyktor began, though it was abundantly clear the Cathar was not under the same restraint as the others who were present, yet this was all working toward the grand scheme that would soon unfold.

"Yes sir, you have outdone yourself. The force is effectively null and void for the subjects. We are ready to begin with testing immediately, awaiting your order of course." The scientist handed his superior a datapad, the power of life and death was not in the hands of the Eternal Empire's most dangerous weapon developer, though it seemed as if he was remarkably restrained for the time being.

"We will begin soon enough, let them gather. Though we should allow our subjects to interact with the locals." With a tap of a finger, the group of scientists watched a new woman burst from the treeline, running in the direction of the testing group, though it was abundantly clear she was being forced along, controlled by dark masters she didn't even know existed.

"Let the games begin."

Rustbuckets will never go out of style.
Leenic watched them woman approach them with interest. It was definitely weird that this woman was just running at the group, especially since she was alone. Leenic kneeled down and drew his vibro blade from its sheath in his boot and then promptly stood up, holding it in a boxer grip. He watched her closely, trying to see if she was merely a diversion for a larger force or just genuinely crazy. Then he saw it: it looked like the woman was being forced along the path toward the group, her movements looked strained and jerky.

"So, uh, what's the plan here?" He said, moving towards the front of the group. "Because I don't think she wants to get any closer to us than she already is."

“You know, if we had kids they’d probably have purple hair.” Moira said without a second thought, only after a few moments did it dawn what she said
“NoNoNoNo I didn’t mean to say that! Moira how could you say that?! This is the worst timeline!” she berated herself as she ran away, her face matching Red’s hair.

She didn’t know where she was, She couldn’t see the future, she just made a fool of herself. This day was off to a great start and she hasn’t even been awake for 10 minutes. She wandered off to put some distance between her and the group. It was easy, she just couldn’t see them ever again. Isolated forever starting now. It was in her self-imposed exile that she realized something from earlier. It was silent, no noise. No bird or other small creatures. Just a handful of sentients. It was off putting to say the least.

Then alarms and the grinding of concrete on concrete. A huge door opened wide as some lady ran up to the door clearly expecting something. Moira hid behind a tree nearby, waiting to see if anything happened or if this would become the new norm in this land.

Haro woke up or at least he thought he did everything around him was black and he couldn't see, he knew he was awake at least he could feel the cool ground on his back and the stabbing pain in his neck. He reached up and touched the source of the pain it was a metallic object pinned into his neck when he tried to remove it he was met with incredible pain.

He was starting to panic not being able to see was something the Miralukan wasn't used to he stood up and stuck his hand out before taking a few tentative steps before bumping into a tree. He took a deep breath trying to calm himself down the air was cool here with a slight breeze he could hear the rustling of tree leaves and the slight creak of branches, ok he was neat a group of trees he knew that at least that was a start time to see if anyone is actually around he took a breath before calling out "Hello anyone out there?"

As the Colonel observed his first batch of subjects interactions, he was quick to notice a new life signature appear along with a new subject I.D. tag appear along with the others. His masked eyes found the lead researcher, his raspy voice asking "Now who is this?" the scientist looked to a small screen on the table below, quickly entering in a few things before then allowing a flow of information to fill the screen.

"Sir, in order to make sure we had the proper amount of subjects for this test we installed shrouded devices in multiple captured specimens to ensure at least some survived the shroud procedure. As you know the process can be... deadly, for certain individuals."

For a moment, Vyktor simply watched the screen and witnessed the events unfolding, only to then allow his gaze to fall on the scientist once again. "I see, will anymore subjects awaken? This group needs to be mobile, I won't wait for others to awaken." It was clear the Colonel was impatient, he had waited a long time for this particular group to run the gauntlet, he didn't want his investment squandered by compassion.

"Perhpas, but we will adjust if anymore subjects awaken. For now, Overwatch scan only identify's this new individual along with the others."

Just as the scientist finished, a new code name was shown on screen for all those monitoring the test.

Haro Lergo Haro Lergo Code: Gunslinger

"Very good, now let us proceed. Let us identify the most aggressive among the group. They need to understand the situation they are in." Reaching down, Vyktor pressed one of the options present on the datapad, this particular one would ensure the woman encountered by the group would continue her charge rather then stop. He cared little if the group killed her, she was expendable. Vyktor knew a few among the group were killers and would have no issue dispatching the girl with their bare hands. The only real question was if they would keep her alive just long enough to attempt to learn some sort of information on their current predicament.

There was nothing to learn. They were no longer people in Vyktor's mind, simply puppets of flesh and bone, and he was their master. They would only ever come to discover the secrets of the world if they proved themselves strong enough to survive the tasks ahead of them.

Lori smiled as she saw the fiesty little droid. "Hi Pitt. Good to see you here too." At least having the droid here might give them some advantage. Possibly.

Her attention turned from Subject 73 Red Subject 73 Red to Moira Connell Moira Connell as the blue hair girl spouted out about them having purple haired kids. She giggled at that, finding it hilarious. Normally she'd of busted out laughing, but this wasn't some average day for either of them. Lori couldn't be the goofball all the time. She needed to be serious and to think more clearly. "Shall we go through the opening? Or just...assess things more?"

That was when the other woman came towards them. Leenic Ellsil Leenic Ellsil was quick to draw a weapon and get in front in what looked like a defensive manner. The woman's face was one of frustrating confusion. She too had the device implanted on the back of her neck. Unlike the others, however, she had another in the middle of her back, hidden beneath her clothing. "Get out while you can! The longer you stay, the worse it'll be!" But no one ever leaves. Not while they were alive, anyways. The locals like herself weren't allowed to die. And she envied the visitors that did. Every attempt to escape on her own or stop what was happening had failed. "This place is cursed!" How else could she explain it?

Lori heard more shouting coming from the trees. Haro Lergo Haro Lergo 's voice. It drew her attention to where it was coming from until the woman got a lot closer, moving towards Leenic and not stopping. Why won't she stop? Lori couldn't help but feel completely creeped out.

Red chuckled at Moira Connell Moira Connell . "Well, you're not wrong." He said. He watched her run away from the group after that sudden outburst. "That was weird." Red admitted.

"Yep." Pitt agreed.

Then, the woman came even closer, and Leenic Ellsil Leenic Ellsil pulled his weapon and stepped up. Red followed after him.
"Don't go for the kill just yet, incapacitate her. She may be able to provide us with information. If she attacks us, go for the kill." Red told them. They needed to know what was going on. Red himself was getting ready to fight the woman if necessary. Built into the gauntlets of his armor, he had a wide variety of weapons. Styled after the Mandalorian vambraces, Red found them extremely helpful. Of course, he always had plenty of weapons on his personnel. They needed to capture her to find out what was going on.

Curtis' eyes fluttered open as he shook his head, trying to orient himself. Wherever he was, it was not familiar. Looking around, he saw a gathering of various people, and after a moment, he picked himself up and brushed off his armour. Instinctively he reached for where his lightsaber would've sat, only to find that it wasn't there, nor was his swordstaff.

"Blast it..." He muttered as he started towards the group, feeling ever so slightly vulnerable without either of his weapons. As he drew closer, he finally recognised someone. "Lori!" He yelled as he approached, a smile suddenly stretching across his face. By the looks of things, no one else had any idea what was going on. At least he wasn't the only one.
