Canon Company Feedback and Discussion

To me, canon companies are just as weird as the fact that people are running around with canon items.

It's centuries beyond the latest point in Legends and Canon. There was a galactic apocalypse and a collapse of the galactic community/economy.

It would make more sense for people to claim that their company has the same name as one from Canon/Legends - but it is not actually the company from Canon/Legends. It won't have control over Canon/Legends items made by that company, or any history, or tangible ties. It'd be like naming one's character Luke Skywalker - but it's obviously not him.

Basically, de-regulation. Staff doesn't get involved anymore beyond to say "You may be called Czerka, but you're not the Czerka company from Canon". If two Czerka's pop up, so be it. One will win the branding war eventually, or they'll both fail due to being too similar. /shrugemoji

Though from what I've seen in this thread, the biggest issue I believe with Companies - both from the past and in the present - has been brought up.

You can work so hard and do all the requirements to tier up to Tier 6

Why put all that work into something you can lose if you have to go on a hiatus for some reason?
Companies are a lot of work to build up. It's a huge time sink with rules that force it to become such.

These two rules in particular are obvious time sinks that prevent someone rapidly getting to Tier 6, even if they can get Major Faction and other company support instantly:

  • You may not advance more than one Tier in a single request.
  • Threads already used for advancement from one tier to the next or made during a previous tier will not count towards a new tier advancement. If your expansion is one lengthy consistent thread, you must specifically provide the applicable unused posts that pertain to that tier up. Each linked thread may only be used to fulfill one of the sub-requirements for each tier level.
It makes sense to me why people would be pissy if they lost their Canon Tier 6 company. Time is a resource, and they had to spend a lot of time to not only get that Canon company but also to get it to Tier 6. Unless that person has achieved roleplaying nirvanna, they're going to be mad and possibly act irrationally/emotionally in response to losing the company.

So, to at least address the question from the lead:

Where should we go from here? Should there be change?

I believe that at least one of the following changes should happen, and in doing so it will alleviate any Canon Company issues that may pop up:
  • Staff washes their hands and de-regulates Canon Companies - with the only rule being that a company named the same as one from Canon is not the same company from Canon.
  • Company Tiers are either deregulated or the rules changed to allow for rapid Tier up if the company immediately has the support for being able to do so.

I'm in support of better changes to tiering up companies. As it stands the rules for tiering up seem somewhat ridiculous to me.

I really don't like the rule about not using threads that were completed prior to the OOC process of tiering up. Doesn't this board operate on a somewhat fluid timeline?

I like what [member="Soeht"] has to say about names, and actually thought about saying as much, but decided against it, since sometimes that's peoples shtick and I won't bash it.

But honestly, I think it would be interesting to see people try to use the canon name's for the 'fame' of it, only to have competitors with very similar names try to gain more traction in the same way. There might be a legal branding kerfuffle, and one of them will probably have to change their name, or go out of business. There is a lot of roleplaying opportunity here... but also potential for some major salt between players.

I still think though that with people's unusual focus on canon entities, that allowing them to be shared is most likely the best route rather than have people compete over them.
