Canon Ships

The obvious counter-argument that no one seems to be acknowledging for the "No one outside a major faction would be able to man/operate a ship that big" is Booster Terrik. He not only manned and operated an Impstar-II, but he did it from 7 ABY well into the Yuuzhan Vong war. So the feat is far from impossible.
but Terrik, aided by the unexpected arrival of a New Republic starfighter force under the command of Pash Cracken, brazened it out, and convinced Captain Varrscha to surrender the undamaged Virulence without a fight. Terrik immediately took command, loading up the captured ship with his people and Cracken's fighters.
Cracken countered by stating that the Virulence crew were now prisoners of war, and that while Booster had a claim on the ship, he couldn't fly it anywhere without a crew. Talon Karrde then defused the situation by proposing the following deal, which was accepted by both parts: Terrik was allowed to keep the Star Destroyer, but she was to be stripped of most of her armament, down to the legal maximum for the largest of civilian starships.
For the upcoming mission, however, she was given a thorough overhaul by the New Republic, restoring her to full military functionality.
TL;DR: Booster couldn't have done what he did without a Major Faction's blessing and thorough support.

The EU is redunkulous, but this is a poor example to make a case with.

My point is that a private individual is capable of manning and crewing a ship of that scale (and doing so for several decades). How the ship was obtained isn't relevant to that point. :p There are dozens of ways to obtain something like that legitimately in RP (you just can't keep or use it according to current rules).

Just to be clear, I'm not arguing for or against, just pointing out that it is a logistically possible feat (but also one that would require a full-time commitment from the character in question).

I don't think you're understanding me. A private individual can do these things, yes - both in the EU and here on Chaos.

You just can't do it without a Major Faction's resources and approval. Any Major Faction can give you a Star Destroyer and say "yes, you're good to go. Have fun." So long as you have their backing, you're good to go - and you don't even have to claim allegiance to that Major Faction.

Think outside the box.

Except Terrik didn't need the backing and resources of a major faction. All he needed was two squadrons of fighters to obtain the ship. After that, the major faction only got in the way and the resources were all his own (or obtained by him). Apart from those two squadrons of fighters, he was completely independent, and you don't need a major faction to rustle up two squadrons of fighters.

So it's only here on Chaos that you actually need the resources of a major faction to do it (just playing devil's advocate).

You're dead wrong. The New Republic honored his claim to the ship. What would've happened if they didn't?

Furthermore, they claimed the original crew as prisoners of war. What would've happened if the New Republic wasn't there to suppress the crew?

Even more, you say the origin doesn't matter. I say it does - without the Imperial Remnant or the New Republic, how would the ship even exist in the first place for Booster to take it?

Everything Booster did, he did because it was allowed. At all points of ownership of this vessel in question, a Major Faction could have denied him the ship, whether it was the New Republic's military or the crew of the Imperial Remnant (who only stood down because of another Major Faction).

You're cherry picking the reality of Booster's situation. I'm sure there's plenty of other ridiculous scenarios in the EU you could choose to make a point with, but again, Booster Terrik is a poor choice.

Someone pointed out (Jamie, I think) that +1000 m ships had their reason and someone else brought Booster Terrick as a counter argument.

My counter argument to that:

Booster Terrick's ship was more of a shadowport than anything else. As far as I remember it was hardly fully manned as well.

I think the underlying problem is that some members want to claim that our rules for factory submissions don't make sense in an effort for an alleviation that will increase personal character growth and role-play opportunities.

My stance, and The Factory Admin's stance, is our rules actually do make sense IC, but we acknowledge there is some give and take. If every member could make any starship any size, there'd be some people who did nothing but Factory subs.

There'd be little roleplaying or reason to interact with others outside of sales.

There'd be little sense of achievement outside of completing your submission.

There'd be a lack of attention and care after the inevitable Factory flood.

Staff would have to bolster its ranks to compensate for moderation requirements.

Our rules make sense when viewed through the balance of the meta OOC environment. Funneling Star Destroyers and their like through Major Factions provides an environment where development and interaction can happen organically and makes what is already a chore feel less like a grind and more like a roleplaying experience. It gives reason for non-Factory players to contribute. It provides a process that limits the amount of submissions so that our moderators aren't overburdened. And it gives Factory submitters a more encompassing sense of accomplishment and reason to interact with the community.

You can find plenty of reasons and rules that are instituted but don't make sense realistically - but when viewed in its entirety, the system provides a method that appeals to all while still catering to the few.
