[*]Speed Rating: Average,
[*]Hyperdrive Class: 1
SPECIAL FEATURES
Firemane had no such deployment method, and so the caravel was designed. Able to carry an entire division of troops, be it motorised, infantry, armour or support directly into combat, the ship can deliver an army to the front line quickly.
Naturally, heading into the jaws of death requires protection, and so the Caravel is formidably protected. Heavy reinforced armour plates overlayed by redundant shield generators and internal decompression seals mean that unless it is blasted by a cruiser or larger at close range it is very hard to stop. And if it is being blasted by a cruiser at close range something has gone seriously wrong!
As a result of this priority on defence and keeping a decent speed, the weapons of the Caravel are pitiful for space combat, barely matching a small corvette. Quad lasers and point defence however do give it strength against attack craft though.
The Caravel is a big ship, and requires firm or nearly firm ground to land. This can present problems of course as such large tracts of land are not always easy to find. Regardless, the quadrants of the ship can land separately if needed, requiring a smaller footprint, though this is not advised. Alternatively, smaller dropships and transports can take the personnel and equipment from altitude to the ground.
On or near the ground though the lack of naval weapons is somewhat negated by the relative power or a few turbolasers and the strength of the ship’s defences. Very few ground weapons have the strength to penetrate such shields and armour, and the turbolasers and quad lasers can provide useful support for the landing troops.
The Caravel can carry a large amount of troops and equipment. The Caravel can carry the following if fully loaded for a single type of item: 15,000 soldiers, 3000 speeders, 750 APCs, 375 light walkers, 250 tanks or artillery, 150 heavy walkers or aircraft or 1500 tonnes of supplies. It is crewed by several hundred crew who help allocate space for balance, secure loads and pilot the ship.
In all the Caravel is designed for one purpose – landing an army onto a planet. It is useless at fleet combat, and lacks a hanger and is not especially agile or fast. What it is though is heavily protected and efficient.

SPECIAL FEATURES
- Heavy armour and shields.
- Storage separated into 4 ‘quadrants’ and two wing ‘corridors’. Any can be sealed off to prevent hull rupture spreading.
- Any quadrant can be jettisoned and has its own life support and (very slow) propulsion. These can even land if detached in atmosphere, though this is a last resort as it is very slow and exposed.
- Can land on surface or dock with a station or ship. Must land on solid or near solid ground, cannot land on water.
- Contains escape pods for all personnel.
- Can carry 15,000 transport units (TU). A soldier and their equipment is 1 TU, a speeder 5 TU, an APC 20 TU, a light walker 40 TU, a tank or artillery piece 60 TU and a heavy walker or aircraft 100 TU. Each ton of equipment or supplies is equal to 10 TU. In theory therefore it could carry a maximum of one of the following: 15,000 soldiers, 3000 speeders, 750 APCs, 375 light walkers, 250 tanks or artillery, 150 heavy walkers or aircraft or 1500 tonnes of supplies. Obviously it rarely carries all of one sort and depending on the unit being landed can carry a variety.
- 12 major access ramps can be used at any one time; 2 to each quadrant, 2 on each corridor.
- Transport. The Caravel can carry and land a very large force of division size directly onto the surface of a planet. After a landing zone has been secured the Caravel can land the troops, supplies and hardware to sustain and enlarge an invasion force.
- Heavy Defences. With very heavy shielding, armour and special decompression seals, the Caravel is very hard to crack. As it is carrying precious cargo into a warzone it relies on its defences to survive. Its fleet grade defences make it almost immune to any land based weapon. Only the heaviest ground weapons have a chance of piercing its armour and shields.
- Support. Though almost useless for space or air combat, the Caravel can turn what weapons it can against ground targets. Turbolasers and quad lasers are very effective at least making enemy troops take cover.
- Transport. The Caravel is designed for one purpose; transport. To this end it has laughable capital weapons, no hanger and is a large boxy target. If this ship is caught in battle it is very vulnerable.
- Descent. Landing the Caravel requires mostly flat ground. As such swamps, forests, mountains or water is impassable for the ship. The enemy will be able to fairly easily detect its landing site therefore and perhaps prepare an unpleasant welcome.
- Soft Inside. Though heavily protected, if the shields and armour are protected, a well-aimed or lucky shot can tear into the corridors or quadrants, killing or jettisoning personnel and equipment. Though other areas are not crippled by the loss of one area, the loss of soldiers and hardware is still devastating. A single unfortunate strike can do the work of a week-long ground campaign.
