While not as heavy as pure Beskar melee weapons, traditional Chaab'kad are significantly heavier than comparable Phrik, Mandalorian Steel, and Soul-Steel weaponry. Most Chaab'kad are marginally heavier than a comparable Durasteel weapon, but also offer significantly superior cutting power and durability to a comparable Durasteel weapon. For so long as a Chaab'kad is outside the effects of a Ysalamiri Field and emitting its signature glow, the weapon is capable of sustaining every bit as much damage as a comparable Beskad and displays marginally improved cutting power over many Beskar weapons, with many weapons displaying similar, if not slightly improved, cutting and piercing capabilities; not to mention the more mystical properties iconic of Soul-Steel weaponry. However, when the blade ceases to glow and the mystical properties fade, the Chab'kad has only the properties of a Mandalorian Steel blade. And while this may afford the wielder a capable weapon in most cases, the wielder will no longer find his weapon capable of penetrating as thick of armor as before, nor will the warrior find his weapon capable of withstanding the effects of a Jetii or Darjetii's lightsaber.
However, it is this exact weakness which most strongly drives the Mando'ade to place Beskar rods within the center of each Chaab'kad. While the outer Soul-Steel metal or alloy may melt away under the repeated strikes of a lightsaber, the Beskar core of the weapon will not yield to such attacks. The Mando'ad'e weapon may find itself mauled by the attacks of a Jetii or Darjetii, but the Mando'ad will be able to prevent these attacks from finding their true mark and will likely be able to survive the encounter and replace his savaged blade.
Only the blade of a Chaab'kad weapon is made of Soul-Steel or Soul-Steel Alloy. The handle (and often-times the hand-guard) are made of exposed Beskar (and as such do not glow), though the pommel or butt-spike is sometimes tipped in a Soul-Steel spike or given some other form of ornamentation. For spear-type weaponry, the entire shaft of the spear is exposed Beskar. Though it is not uncommon for rare examples of spear-type weapons to utilize Phrik instead of Beskar for a reduced weight and improved ease of handling. (Phrik variants are not covered in this sub and would need to be subbed separately.)
When initially conceived it was known that Soul-Steel would glow when not within the effective range of a Ysalamiri field or other force-neutralizing field. These rune-inlayed weapons were, at the time of their initial construction, designed as one-part novelty ornateness and one-part early warning system to warn the wielder in the event that he or she was no-longer within the protective range of a Ysalamiri field and vulnerable to the magics of the Jetti and Darjetti.
As warriors and craftsmen became more familiar with these weapons and their effects, the realized just how severely they had been undervaluing Soul-Steel. While the minuscule amount of Soul-Steel included in these blades was insignificant to imbue these weapons with the various energy charges that would make the later iterations of Chaab'kad weaponry infamous, the emotional effects of these weapons on users, allies, and enemies alike were significant enough to draw the attention of the elder Mando'ade.
Recognizing that exposing one-self and one's allies to fear presented a very serious danger on the battlefield, these weapons were almost banned entirely throughout Mandalorian Culture. However, it was a member of Clan Rekali that prevented such an event from occurring. Well-versed in matters of the Force, the Rekali spokesman brought it to the attention of the Mando'ade Elders that these emotional manipulating effects were drastically amplified upon those who were sensitive to the force and could, if used properly, prevent a Jetti or Darjetti from being able to concentrate sufficiently to summon forth their magics.
With this new revelation brought to light, the use of Chaab'kad weaponry among Mando'ade exploded almost overnight.
Ori'chaab Beskade, otherwise known as "great-fear blades", forgo the traditional Mandalorian Iron core of the Chaab'kad and instead are forged entirely of Soul-Steel or a Soul-Steel alloy. Because of this greater percentage of Soul-Steel in the construction of these blades, Ori'chaab Beskad weapons are extremely light weight (comparable to phrik weaponry) and possess the strongest mystical properties of any other type of Chaab'kad. The weapons glow more brightly than traditional Chaab'kad and often emanate ambient energy fields around themselves, such as flames or other visible and unidentifiable forms of energy. While they are in this state of glowing, Ori'chaab Beskad are capable of blocking lightsabers and possess similar cutting capabilities to Songsteel blades. While not glowing (most often due to coming too close to a vod wearing a nutrient harness), these weapons perform identically to a similarly constructed Mandalorian Steel weapon. While emanating their signature glow, Ori'chaab Beskad are capable of emitting strong energy discharges with every strike. This energy comes in the form of thermal energy, electrical energy, or kinetic energy and is emitted at a greater strength than by traditional Chaab'kad weapons.
Likewise, while in this state of glowing, Ori'chaab Beskad weapons emanate intense emotions of panic, fear, excitement, and resolve (in descending order of intensity) and do so far more intensely than other Chaab'kad weapons. While these emotions are severely distracting and often overwhelming for Force Users in the vicinity of the blades, directly touching or being touched by an Ori'chaab Beskad creates an even stronger effect on a Force User as their focus and attention is drawn into the heart of the blade where the Force User feels the fear and panic of the billions of citizens of Dromund Kaas in the moments before dozens of asteroids extinguished most of the life on the planet. Deeper beneath this layer of fear and panic, Force Users who delve too deeply into the emotional maelstrom of the Ori'chaab Beskad find themselves exposed to the fear and excitement of innumerable galactic citizens that watched with rapt attention as the Destruction of Dromund Kaas was televised. And finally, at the deepest layer, a Force User can find the cold resolve of tens of thousands of Mandalorian combatants as they go through the final actions of dooming a world and incinerating billions of lives.
The experience of exploring the depths of a Chaab'kad are haunting and can leave lasting emotional and psychological damage to Force Users who willingly or unwillingly attempt such a feat. However, while the effects and corruptions of these dark energies and strong emotions are known to Force Users, they are by and large unknown to the Mando'ade that wield these blades. To most Mando'ade, it is only known that Jetii and Darjetii find the blades to be distracting and can prevent them from accurately performing their tricks and magics. Which is often reason enough to utilize them in spite of the morale-compromising threat they pose. To minimize this risk, those that wield these blades often augment their helmets with Terentarek Leather, Force Masks, or Jal Shey amulets as well as line their weapons and weapon sheaths with similar containment. This has, in turn, increased the demand for such items and has created a market of opportunity for Dathomiri Witches, Clan Rekali Knights, and other Mando'ade knowledgeable about such artifacts.
For the rare Mandalorian Force User that chooses to utilize these blades themselves, the risk of personal injury and corruption is severe. However, for those that can go beyond the fear and panic of the Sith Citizens and Slaves and can instead focus upon the resolve of those tens of thousands of Mando'ade who participated in the Battle for Dromund Kaas, there exists the potential to attune oneself to a Chaab'kad and draw strength from it.
