Strengths:
- Able to store 30 sets of hyperspace vector coordinates in its astrogation buffer
- Able to operate in the vacuum of space.
- Plugged into a fighter or ship the droid can monitor the vessel’s systems and correct technical issues as well as providing backup to the pilot.
- Toolbox: Chip contains a variety of tools to meet almost any job. While not as capable as a dedicated repair droid Chip is able to perform most normal shipboard repairs, but also has more utility than a dedicated repair droid.
- Secure Comms: Chip comes equipped with the Hermes comms system allowing it to communicate in a safe and secure manner.
- Microrepulsors: Designed to provide support, both in a ship and on the ground Chip comes equipped with a series of microrepulsors scattered across his surface, allowing hte droid to generate a repulsor field to allow hom to float over difficult terrain
- Shield: Chip comes equipped with shield emitters capable of providing the droid with protection against any problems he might face when supporting his master in the field.
- Lacks any combat weapons other than a stun gun. In combat, Chip’s best option is to run and use its other abilities to provide support.
- Can’t speak: Like many Astromech droids out there Chip is unable to speak and instead communicates via a series of binary clicks or through other computers.
DESCRIPTION
The rebuilding of any technology is always an interesting challenge for an engineer, doubly so when the original units is so iconic. After the R2 unit the BB-8 is one of the most iconic droids in existance, and that is something that the engineers at Locke and Key Mechanics wanted to maintain even as they sought to update the internals of the droid.
The upgrades started at the most basic level, bringing the internal circuitry of the droid up to scratch. This started with the inclusion of one of E.O.D.D.’s EB-s Droid brains, the addition of this brain served a singular purpose. The EB-S effectively allows two different kinds of programming to exist at once, in this particular case, the basic astromech programming and a more advanced slicer programming.
Working down from the droid’s brain the droid was outfitted with heavy shields to help it survive on the battlefield, as it supported it’s master. Too many astromech droids had been caught out, shot and damaged on a battlefield. This was not a fate that anyone wanted Chip to fall to. The droid’s surface was also studded with repulsors to help him levitate and hover, to better pass over difficult terrain.
Like most Astromech droids, Chip is relatively unarmoued or armed, mostly focusing on a series of repair tools to provide support to Veiere. Unlike most of his compatriots however, the droid does come equipped with a weapons of sorts, a stun gun. Not much use against foes in armour or behind shielding it is more than enough to take down an unarmoured being, or an animal that might threaten the droid or it’s master.
