Grand Shepherd Burtch
Retired old admiral
Burtch could… feel the events as they unfolded through his link with Shii-Cho. Sanura Io’s Butterflies rushed in to clear the path between Starcrest and the Rakamat. Kalic Daws seemed to be able to make use of the data as it poured into his own head from the uplink. The tiny fighter ducked and weaved through the swarms enemy aircraft and bugs, while a hail of fire from the Butterflies swatted any who attempted to intercept him.
Burtch coughed up another wad of blood as his nervous system was being overwhelmed with data that should not be there. He tried to focus his one good eye on the navy cap of one of his officers to try and keep from losing himself in the telemetry feed. He had already lost vision in the left eye, which had turned from red to grey. The officer whose hat he was staring at looked around nervously as he wondered why the Grand Shepherd had taken such keen interest in him. Burtch ignored the man’s worried expression as he continued to try and keep his mind from coming apart. It was all he could do.
He was continuously force-fed sensor data from the Shii-Cho, which gave him incredible Involuntary perception of the battle outside. Kalic came in low and as he closed the distance between himself and the Rakamat, he emptied his first flex tube launcher into the massive beast. The beast reacted quickly with dovin basals to soak up the sudden hail of missile fire. Shii-Cho’s gunnery crews quickly picked up on what was going on and rained a hail of point defence laser fire into the beast aswell. The effort resulted in the retasking of more of the Dovin Basals that could have been used to foil Kalic Daws attack. Then, just as Kalic seemed to be on the verge of missing his opportunity, he pulled Starcrest up and emptied his second flex tube of proton bombs into the creature’s neck.
In that moment, Kalic wisely cut the sensor feed. But Shii-Cho took a few moments to sever the connection from Burtch’s on mind, since they were still adjusting to their new level of bond.
Several of the bombs ricocheted off of the heavy Yorik coral armor that encased the neck and exploded harmlessly in the air around the scene as if to punctuate Kalic’s exit as he ascended past and away from target. One bomb got lodged in the gap between two Armored plates. And stuck there. Dormant.
Burtch felt a moment of despair, as he figured the bomb must’ve been a dud. The giant beast seemed to revel in surviving the attack as if triumphant. It raised its forelegs into the air and howled in a feral roar that pulsated the wind in everyone’s chest. Then, as the roar tapered off, it brought its forelegs down onto the rocky surface below, stomping, shaking the mountains…
…and then the lodged bomb exploded!
The front of the beast’s neck opened up to reveal a plume of multicoloured flames and a spew of soggy meat which would rain down onto the battlefield beneath it! The Rakamat’s chin was blown up and back, which tore the spinal column at the base of the neck and sent its head somersaulting into the sky. It disappeared into the low overcast clouds that had just recently rolled in. No one on the ground would know where the head went after that.
Rather unceremoniously, the rest of the body, now without a connection to its brain, simply collapsed. It began slowly rolling down the rest of the mountain, crushing most of its weapons and dovin basals under its massive tumbling body.
The sensor feed then severed completely with Shii-Cho, but it was too little, too late. Burtch’s blood soaked front of his uniform now revealed the frightening amount of blood he had lost. His vision turned blurry as consciousness slipped away from him. He then passed out in his command chair, causing a ruckus amongst the few bridge officers that were able to notice and summon a medic.
He never got to hear the words as a member of his staff announced the retreat of the Yuuzhan Vong armies. The return of Angelus Hafey and Leodardo, and Ira Sarrin ’s battlegroup would cement those results as fact.
Effectively, the battle was won.
