CIVIL DEFENSE FORCE

"People are counting on us! The galaxy is counting on us!" ―Han Solo

ECKAhnA.png

Each world in the League protects itself from local incursions with its own planetary defense fleets, but when the LAW undergoes larger missions, the PDFs combine to form the formidable Civil Defense Force. Unique cultures, techniques, strategies, and disciplines coalesce into a single entity that responds to threats on the national scale. The Civil Defense Force consists of three distinct branches: the army, navy, and starfighter corps. While service personnel in local units are generally trained and equipped by planetary command officers, enlistment in the CDF requires the completion of a standardized training program. Career specializations are plentiful for cadets, though certain advanced placements require exemplary scores on the League Service Aptitude Battery (LSAB). Prestigious military academies have become prominent in LAW space, such as the Lasan Institute of Military Science and the Suarbi Naval Academy on Susefvi. Service in the CDF is voluntary but a common choice for young League citizens wishing to defend their nation, make an honest and dependable living for their families, or simply to see the stars.

    ARMY

"A good soldier relies on skill, intelligence and good fortune. A poor soldier relies on a weapon... and weapons can always fail." ―Colonel Marck Linth

    KDAs1yy.png
The Civil Defense Force army stands at the ready to defend the League in battles waged planetside. In addition to local defense forces found on most inhabited systems, each member world of the LAW has a dedicated garrison of CDF troopers, support personnel, and, if available, armored and mechanized divisions. Due to the nature of the League's multilateral defense structure, there is great diversity between battalions and even individual units in the army. This serves both to ensure the survival of each world's traditional military identity and to encourage the development of new advances in military science.

Common specializations in the army include:

-Infantry: Boots on the ground, rifles at the ready, and wits sharper than a vibroknife. That's what makes a good soldier in the Civil Defense infantry. League troopers are a diverse fighting force sourced from the LAW's local planetary defense fleets. Each soldier is a unique asset bringing with them a variety of skills and combat techniques learned on their homeworld that, when combined with formal CDF training, makes them formidable in the line of duty.

-Support: The lifeblood of the League's army that keeps things moving is the support division. Troopers in this division range from nurses and combat medics to field engineers and technicians. Most infantry squads are assigned support personnel to assist with combat operations. Combat medics are specially trained to triage injured soldiers on the battlefield, while engineers may deploy bubble shields or auto-turrets and mobile weapons emplacements.

-Armored & Mechanized: When the League needs to throw a hard punch or give the enemy a wake-up call, the armored and mechanized divisions are mobilized. Armored units typically refer to hovertanks, troop transports, and other such vehicles. Scouting speeders, speeder bikes, and walkers comprise the mechanized division. Troopers assigned to the armored and mechanized divisions are often referred to as pilots or crewmen and are deployed to lead forward assaults, defend important positions, and support ground units.

    NAVY

"None of us are ready. No one can ever be truly ready for what war brings. The best we can do is meet it with our face forward and our hearts clear. You will do that. I know you will." ―Admiral Gial Ackbar

    ECKAhnA.png

The League's navy is the spearhead of the Civil Defense Force, the first to respond to conflicts and crises in the Outer Rim. Its unique capabilities and tactics are unpredictable and often difficult for more streamlined navies to counter. While its core fleets are composed of standard ship classes and models, the majority of the CDF navy is a hodgepodge of refurbished or repurposed vessels claimed from local conflicts across League space; through sheer diversity alone, the League navy can disorient and undermine enemy forces. Even in times of peace, naval forces are on duty. Tours can last anywhere from weeks to months as fleets guard disputed borders, patrol internal hyperlanes and trade routes, and monitor for hostile activity within and around League space.

Common specializations in the navy include:

-Servicemen: Thousands of capable crewmen are active in the League navy, staffing ships from the humblest freighters to massive star destroyers. Servicebeings serve a plethora of roles aboard their vessels depending on the ship's class, size, and mission parameters, but they are each necessary down to the very last.

-Officers: From a cockpit to the bridge, commissioned naval officers command the League's warships with bravery and guile. Most officers in the navy have reached their position through successful operations and campaigns across the stars.

-Commandos: Also known as League marines or fleet troopers, commandos are the SpecForces' naval extension of the grizzled Pathfinder Corps. Commando squads are deployed most frequently for combat purposes during boarding operations against enemy vessels or space stations, but it is not uncommon for them to be inserted planetside via orbital drop pods to assist in ground missions.

    STARFIGHTER CORPS

"Commander, I heard you were looking for some good pilots." ―Wedge Antilles

    ECKAhnA.png

    80J5MCN.png
Every navy depends on a strong starfighter corps, and the League’s is second to none. Diverse in both pilot and ship composition, the LAW starfighter corps is an extension of the CDF navy that serves a support role in both naval and ground operations. The starfighter corps is commonly deployed when larger vessels and capital ships require additional support such as escort and combat missions in space or delivering effective air support to League forces in planetside engagements. While most squadrons within the corps are formed by their local system’s defense fleet or assigned by League Command, the CDF does possess several elite starfighter squadrons with pilots who are specially recruited for service in missions that are clandestine or particularly harrowing. The notable Phoenix and Renegade squadrons are two such units.

Common specializations in the starfighter corps include:

-Pilots: Pilots and flight crews are highly skilled individuals that make up the bulk of the starfighter corps’ active personnel. They fly the League’s starfighters, interceptors, and bombers, as well as military freighters and transport shuttles. They’re aces one and all, from trained academy graduates to farmyard pilots.

-Engineers: It takes skilled hands to repair, maintain, and modify the wide variety of ships that make up the starfighter corps. League engineers can be found aboard capital ships and space stations or posted in hangars and docking bays on the ground, where their primary duties include the maintenance of the corps’ starships.

-Training Officers: Skill begets skill, that’s why the starfighter corps’ training officers are among the Outer Rim’s best pilots. These instructors develop flight simulations, practice runs, and low-stakes operations to ensure that League pilots are well equipped to handle the challenges of their duties in the field.

-Combat Information Specialists: Junior and senior specialists of the corps work tirelessly to ensure that intelligence is accurate, reliable, and effective during briefings and live operations. Specialists are also responsible for coordinating squadron assignments, relaying information between flight squadrons and fleet commanders or ground teams, and providing situation reports when needed.

    SPECFORCES

    "We're not crazy. We're Pathfinders. There's a difference." ―Needle

    ECKAhnA.png

    9v5lTDg.png
When the task is too sensitive for the long arm of the League’s military, it is the SpecForces who are called upon to see the mission through. The SpecForces are elite, specialized regiments nested within every Civil Defense Force division. They are the first boots on the ground, using covert dropships or para-gliders to drop into enemy territory to establish beachheads and hold positions until reinforcements arrive. They undergo clandestine operations, traveling light and relying on their mobility and stealth to cause havoc amongst the ranks of the enemy. SpecForces units are called upon to gather forward intelligence, silence high-value targets, or simply throw a stinging sucker punch.

    Notable SpecForces divisions include:

-Pathfinders: The bulk of the League's SpecForces units fall under the Pathfinder corps. Pathfinders are elite specialists trained in infiltration, guerilla tactics, and snatch-and-grab maneuvers. In any Defense Force operation of note, the Pathfinders are the first boots on the ground and the last to leave, only withdrawing their units once the mission is confirmed a success by League Command. Many members of the Pathfinder division are skilled marksman and duelists, able to adapt to combat encounters at any range or risk level.

-Urban Specialists: Trained to fight in sprawling urban centers and ecumenopolises, urban specialists are proficient in using the forms and facilities of a city against their enemies. They are often streetfighters and close-combat specialists, trained to inflict maximum carnage while minimizing collateral damage in battlefield contained innocent citizens.

-Technicians: More generalized than other divisions but still just as important, SpecForces technicians are a varied collection of highly-trained specialists that includes mechanical technicians, combat engineers, medics, drivers, pilots, sensor and communications specialists, interrogators, and procurement specialists. Technicians are fully combat capable and are frequently assigned to SpecForces units to augment and support their operations.
