THE CONTRACTOR CORPS

Turning gold into steel.

A burgeoning Empire will be opposed by threats on all sides. War can come suddenly, without warning. The military force of the nation may need to be multiplied overnight. But how can this be accomplished?

The Contractor Corps is the answer to this question.

Reliable mercernaries and private security firms festoon the galaxy. The Contractor Corps pays a small amount of money each quarter to registered mercs, placing them on retainer. While on retainer, these mercenaries may not take any contracts that oppose Imperial interests.

Then, if the Empire finds itself in a military engagement, it can activate these contractors and mobilize them to supplement the Imperator Corps, adding thousands of soldiers to a battlefield with the swipe of a pen on a paid contract. Once activated, the contractors of the Contractor corps receive provisional ranks so they can integrate into the Imperial command structure. These contractors may find themselves on the most dangerous front lines, or they may be held in reserve to tackle hot spots. Whatever the Empire needs, they provide.

Occasionally, the Contractor Corps may be asked to perform actions which can later be denied by the ISA. Or they may be asked to do high-risk jobs too dangerous for the Empire to risk its own personnel.

That's fine. Contractors wield the flag of the nation they are paid to, for as long as they are paid to, and they do whatever they are paid to. That's the life. And generally, the worse the job, the better the pay.

The Contractor Corps is managed by an Imperial administrator known as an 'Administrative Prefect,' who is a high level executive within the Empire's command structure, not unlike the Moffs of the previous Empire. They are given administrative support by a Chief and Deputy Chief, who are usually also Imperial citizens. Any or all of these individuals might accompany the contractors on the field, depending on the nature of the assignment. Or they might be hands-off, and simply issue marching orders and arrange logistics. Each situation and each prefect will have their own style and approach.

The most trusted mercenary captains are eligible for the rank of Senior Contractor. These are mercenaries who have remained as loyal as a contractor can possibly be, and are the closest to full-time military personnel of any within the Contractor Corps. Below them are Contractors and Associates, filling out the mid-level and low-levels of the Contractor Corps rank structure.

No matter the rank, they all bleed for the coin of the realm.

That is the way of the soldier-of-fortune.
