History: The Corellian Sand Cat is a small creature from, obviously, Corellian. The animal is the result of selective breeding over many generations, where Sand Panthers and Dire-Cats were bred not for the their size and strength but for their diminutive nature to create a creature that would be able to assist in camps, small settlements and sailing vessels to keep vermin populations down. Keeping the vermin population down is important as it stops the spread of disease and prevents food from spoiling.
After many years, it became a sign of good luck to have Sand Cats on-board vessels. It helped with sailor morale, and there are even stories of several sand cats surviving a variety of ship accidents, and ships with a Sand Cat on it seem to have a higher survival rate of crewmen when the vessel sank. While the Sand Cat is not magic and will not dethroen empires, or protect their crew with magical Force like abilities, unlike certain creatures, they never were seen as a bad omen and when the Corellians took to the stars, Sand Cats came along and became very defensive of their vessels from intruders from other worlds, namely the vermin.
After the loss of Corellia at the hands of Akala and her crazy teen melt-down, it was feared that the Sand Cat population had been decimated, however populations in Corellia’s Sister Worlds have shown up and as the Sand Cat has avoided the destruction of the world, is showing that it is once again a good luck symbol for spacers and other astronautical professionals.
