Counterstrike (SJO)

“Me? Run the gauntlet?” Her brows rose in a very skeptical manner.

For a moment, Valae imagined herself floundering around hopelessly on the obstacle course. It was not a pretty picture.

“Trust me, nobody wants to see that.” Valae called, following her words with a self-deprecating chuckle.

The Jedi healer fell silent, watching as the group assembled. Her eyes lingered on each person for a few seconds, none of them were familiar. There were some that looked like soldiers – surely they would do well here today. A couple of fellow force-users had entered as well. However, Valae’s chestnut gaze stopped altogether when she spotted the tall form of a Valkyri woman. Goodness, it would probably be best to stay out of her way.

All in all, the group looked rather capable.

A moment later, she was joined on the observation deck by Colonel Calderon. She listened as he spoke, his instructions carried down to the participants waiting below. As the Colonel began to work the controls, Valae watched as the enemy soldiers materialized. It was all startlingly realistic, especially to someone like her that was unfamiliar with such situations. Valae’s grip on the railing grew tighter as she watched the group prepare.

This ought to be good…

"And fun I am sure you will be having too," Cambria quipped lightly with an amused twitch of her lekku.

There was no doubt in the Jedi Knight's mind that the Commander of the Antarian Rangers was going to put the small group through the paces and then some. Training over and over again in all kinds of situations was the key to being able to react appropriately in real combat. Once muscle memory was built up, it left your mind clear to determine what came next. It is why the Jedi Guardian spent hours in the dojo fine-tuning the lightsaber forms she wielded and in the simulator practicing her flying skills as well.

"Thank you for the offer, Colonel, but I will train with the others. It is why we are here today, no?" the blue-hued Twi'lek smiled softly with a cant of her head, then she made her way over with graceful ease to the table that had weapons on it.

Golden eyes perused over it... A thermal detonator was taken and an extra power pack for her blaster pistol side arm. Cambria's lightsaber and shoto she would retain; attached to her utility belt. Although the Twi''lek Jedi would not have the use of the Force once inside the gauntlet where the void created by the furry, lizard-like tree-dwellers from Myrkr, the light sword still was a deadly weapon in an experienced hand.

Cambria walked up to the Jedi Padawans and nodded to them. "When inside the Force-neutral bubble created by the ysalamiri, it will feel like your head is in a fish bowl and the Force will not be accessible. Stay calm and use your other senses as well as your critical thinking skills. We must all work as a team along with the Rangers.," she offered sagely, then did as Colonel Calderon instructed moving to the yellow box near the double doors.

Dark-lashed eye lids closed for a moment and a deep breath was taken and blown out to find her center In the Fore before losing it for the duration of the training session. It was like someone taking a drink of the last alcohol in the flask to calm their nerves. The gesture would have to sustain them until later.

Marl was surprised to find a fellow Clone Trooper, let alone a commando, the best of the best troopers, to survive 900 years. Before he was able to greet his brother, the Colonel began speaking. Once the Colonel finished, Marl looked over to the Commando who had already wandered off to get some equipment. Marl followed the Commando to the armory station, surprisingly enough they carried seemingly ancient weapons, including two twin DC-17 hand blasters. Holding them in his hands gave Marl flashbacks, Including a flashback to the simulations on Kamino. For the first time since he woke up, he felt slightly at home.

Marl looked around at the others. These were his new brothers and sisters in arms. He looked around the table for some more weapons. Marl was always one for DC-17m's but the RC already had gotten to the only one, The beautiful thing about that weapon was the interchangeability of the weapon. Marl had used it only once before, and it was probably one of the best weapons from their era. However the hand blaster's will have to do. Despite having the twin hand blasters, Marl has been dying to find a pair of old clone armor, however clone trooper armor is now a priceless artifact in this day and age. He grabbed a couple of thermal detonators and went out of the armory. He stood next to the commando.

"Just like Kamino, right commando?" Marl said nudging 212.

He was surprised how relaxed the commando was, however seeing how it was 900 years in the future and how he wasn't around for most of the war if he was the last batch would probably make the commando more human than any other clone he's ever met. He liked that about him. However Marl doubted he'd be able to change at all. He had been through too many campaigns in the clone wars to change.

He stood at attention "Ready Colonel." Marl said.

The door opened a to reveal a Verpine carrying a helmet that was somewhat unusually shaped with it's single long visor stretching most of the way around the head, an elongated mouth piece, and two loose hanging pipes that clearly normally attached to a breathing apparatus. He was also clad in what appeared to be heavily modified black Mandalorian armour with the white skull of a Mythosaur painted on the front. What was really noticeable though was the belt he wore, a series of pouches, tools, a covered holster, a droid disruptor and a bare dagger. Long fingers were covered by gloves but above two mismatched bracers. One was recognisable as a Dinu'ul and the other appeared to be a miniature shield generator of clearly Verpine design.

Sko had to admit it had been awhile since he last wore his armour. Usually being a captain meant he wore light armour or just his carapace for protection. Aliit'Vereen Eukgar'gam was considered light armour by most Mandalorians but combined with his carapace it offered a fair amount of protection. Now he just had to remember his training. He'd been invited to this training session by Master Yune who'd he'd helped in several instances in space combat which was his forte. Running a gauntlet was going to be interesting especially since his normal reaction to a heavily entrenched position would be to just bomb it or hit it with artillery until nothing was left moving except clouds of ash.

Compound eyes taking in everything he began a quick analysis of what seemed to be the next squad that would be running the simulation. The tubes that could only be anti-tank weapons were being shouldered by at least two of the group, a female was standing in a yellow square that appeared to be a lift of some sort wielding a rotating cannon. They certainly were bringing enough heavy weapons. Meanwhile a younger boy seemed to be getting trained in how to wield a blaster. That was interesting, making his way towards them he brought up his helmet and began to connect the breathing tubes to the back of his armour. He highly doubted they would be needed but it was best to be careful. Nodding at them his mandibles clacked as he spoke "Are you going in next? I was invited here by Master Yune to brush up on my ground combat."

It looked like the Anzat would be using the designs that he himself as made, as he looked around, analyizing the various weapons that others were using. "An honor to meet you Colonel [member="Valkren Calderon"]." he respectfully replied, making sure to keep a mental image of him in his memory.

While he knew they weren't the best designs in the galaxy, Krayzen still took pride in his designs. The Anzat armed himself with the SK2 Ripper, a variation of the Mandalorian ripper, and Verpine shatter gun. The young Anzati also had his own dragon breath rounds as ammunition. Krayzen had also brought in with him a weapon system that could be modified to a pistol, rifle, or sniper rifle. Lastly, the former Sith also brought in his own personal armor, although even he had to admit that the design was outdated, and he didn't prefer it that much anymore.

"I am ready." he said, speaking with a modulated voice, as we waited for other commands

Colonel Calderon only grinned as his people made their way into the yellow starting box, the doors for the gauntlet shutting tight behind them. His gloved hands touched the controls once more, forcing the lifelike images of hostile insurgents to all appear out from behind their cover. Weapons raised, it seemed like there were already fifteen to twenty hostiles alone on the ground with the team, all focused directly on the helpless group of participants. The towers on either side that were closest to them were busy with commotion as the simulated enemies were scrambling to set up the squad automatic weapons into good positions. He wondered if the full team would make the sprint to the first section of cover, because if any of them hesitated for the slightest second on the start, they'd for sure get their first hit.

Yet, that's not why he brought out so many directly on them at the start. He did it for intimidation purposes. He knew what most of them would feel if they couldn't steel their nerves. Even in a training simulation, if he was to stare down that many shooters and then retreat to cover, he'd know all hell would be coming down on his position. When someone has that fear and anxiety of sudden danger building, it can affect their ability to preform in combat and especially under pressure. In fact, most of the simulated enemies he had brought out to train their weapons on his team of participants would retreat back to cover as soon as the gauntlet started, as a way to get a better position on them as soon as possible. The colonel tapped another command on the console before him, the timer starting down.

"Gauntlet begins in ten...Nine...Eight" A monotoned voice rang out in the course, alerting the participants to prepare.

Valkren turned to the Jedi healer who was previously on the observation deck before him, "Master Kitra, I have a question..What is the first thing that goes through your mind when someone points a gun at you?" He asked this rather curiously, placing both of his hands on the railing and looking over at the others very intently, seemingly racking his mind for an answer to a strange question. He asked this rather plainly though, as if there wasn't a booming voice counting down the seconds to the team's possible defeat below them.

"It's just, soldiers are trained much different on how they perceive a raised weapon." The young colonel stated this in a matter-of-fact way, reaching to his microphone as the countdown began to reach its end.

"Alright, ladies and gents..Time to get evil!" His own voice boomed out, before the countdown took over once more. Valkren then stepped back, watching and waiting to see how exactly the first moments of combat would pan out, and who would make it safely to cover.

"Three..Two..."

A buzzer rang out through the entire gauntlet, only ending to let a brief moment of absolute silence fill the air. Just a measly moment was given to the team to begin their run for cover, all they could possibly hear were their own words and footsteps before the rounds began to go off in their direction.

The mechanic voice counting down was no match to the sound of his heart thumping. Adrenaline raced through Marl as he looked at the closest targets. he was thinking about the fastest way to take them down in a timely manner. the buzzer rang and marl ran out the starting box and leaped forward doing a tactical roll towards cover blaster fire whizzed over his head as his comrades scrambled for cover. Suddenly a target popped up to his left, easily dispatched with his dual DC-17's. a laser whizzed past his head. He shouldn't have paid more attention to his right. He quickly pointed both blasters towards the target. before he could pull his triggers a blaster bolt hit his right DC-17 pistol, disarming him and leaving the pistol broken on the ground behind him.

"Karkin' hell." Marl muttered as he returned fire.

"EAT LASER, CLANKER!" Marl yelled as the lasers smacked the target. The words flowed out of his mouth, he knew it wasn't a battle-droid from the clone wars, but it felt right to him.

First two hit the target in the chest. Once the target was down Marl put one in the head for good measure, and another two in the chest for wrecking his other pistol. As the snipers in the guard towers averted their attention away from Marl. he vaulted the barrier as he fired rapidly in front of him, he slid to the next wave of barriers and began looking around for others who had made it this far.

Three, Two, One...

That's all Jerit heard before the simulation began. He felt the force decrease greatly, it was strange. It must have been one of the functions of the arena. It felt like a part of him left with no trace. After that little moment to himself, Jerit was so nervous about combat training that he felt like quitting, but that wasn't going to happen. He ran as fast as his legs could carry him to cover, hoping to get a feel of where all of the enemies are. He ended up by a man who had two of the same pistol. D-17s. He heard the man yell

"EAT LASER, CLANKER!"

And bolts ran from his blaster, towards the targets in the towers who were reigning down fire like the apocalypse. Jerit knew he was going to be dead weight to the entire team if he did not do something to help out. So, he got up from his cover and held his E-3 carbine just like how RC 212 had taught him. Then he tried aiming.

Hold your breath between each shot, you'll be fine.... It echoed through the boy's mind.

No enemies were focusing on him, so this was the perfect chance. He held his breath, making sure everything was correct. He let go of the trigger.

BANG!

He shot about 3 bolts and it hit an enemy! 2 bolts landed in the chest and the last one in the shoulder. He couldn't believe it... He did it! Jerit went back to cover as the enemies were now aware of him and started to shoot down on his cover. He had his back to the mini wall, E-3 carbine in both of his shaking hands.

" I did it... I really did it..." Was the only thing he said.

He was electrified he could do it. Now he is confident.....

There was barely time to note all the new people now joining in the exercise. It seemed two were clones from an age long gone, another Jedi at least and a quite frankly, giant of a woman who was wielding one of the heavier weapons with great ease. This made Yuroic rightly out of place. He heard the countdown and watched as the soldiers dove into position, getting into cover and Yuroic just slumped against the nearest cover. Silence was heard for a moment, moment made him think that this was perhaps a bad joke. Then the firing started. Not just from one direction. It seemed to come from everywhere. Yuroic watched as Jerit stepped into action and the clone was firing back into his old training.

Grabbing his main blaster, he peeked over the cover and saw the lines of enemies. He was annoyed that he could not reach for the Force, it was a sense of calm he had grown use to. However, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath before snapping his eyes back open. He fired repeatedly. Unlike Jerit, Yuroic had previous training with blasters. Not of this quality. Nor were they repeating blasters. But he had some training, his shots weren't perfect but he had skill enough to hit several opponents. He looked around and wondered what they were going to do. They couldn't just stay here.

We have to move! They will overwhelm us from here! We need a plan! He shouted over the noise of blaster fire ringing through the room.

From the observation deck, Valae watched wide-eyed as the participants stood ready. As the enemies began to focus their attention on the group, she felt her palms begin to grow a bit sweaty. She loosened her grip on the railing and then wiped her hands on the front of her trousers. For a moment, she imagined that she was down on the course with the rest of the men and women. Valae wasn’t even sure what she would do in this situation. The idea of being placed in combat was still terrifying.

Though she would not be taking to the battlefield any time soon, she knew that she would be exposed to this sort of environment in the near future. She swallowed hard, attempting to steel her own nerves as the countdown began. Valae turned as Colonel Calderon addressed her, slightly surprised to hear his rather sudden question.

What would go through her mind if someone was pointing a gun at her?

“I’m not sure what I would be thinking – I think I’d be too frightened to have any thoughts at all.” Valae answered honestly.

She listened as the Colonel spoke once more, and gave a quiet nod in response. Valae figured that soldiers did feel fear, just like anyone else – but perhaps it was just a whisper in the back of their minds. The training they received likely helped them stay calm in the face of such danger. Her chestnut eyes slowly shifted back to the training just as the buzzer sounded loudly. Valae’s shoulders drew in tight, she couldn’t help it.

And now, she simply watched as the others sprang to action.

The buzzer hit and RC did not run or sprint anywhere. He stepped behind a barrier and popped his head out assessing the situation. The kid Jedi was doing well with his shooting, but they were woefully disorganized and Marl had gone too far forwards. He was at risk for being flanked on both sides, which was not a good situation.

"Marl push left, all the way left and hold a blocking position. Yuroic you go with him. Make your way up the left side, cover each other as you move."

RC snapped out from behind cover, leaning out just a bit. His hand pressed the DC17M into his shoulder pocket and he fired. It was a triangular firing patter, dead center mass to keep the enemies heads down. There wasn't gonna be much hitting anything at this range. He had to move up.

"Jerrit you come with me."

He leaned out again and fired his grenade launcher.
*Fwwomp!*

The round arced, coming back down in the middle of the map and detonating. A huge blast with a superheated plasma cloud erupted. That bought them all about a few seconds while the enemy sensors were flooded with light and overpressure.

"Let's go!"

He grabbed the Jedi by the shirt, hauling him with him until they made their way just right of where the the blast had hit. They ducked and RC unslung his PLX launcher. The order of the day was heavy demo.

"Cover our right flank kid. Don't let them get down that side and shoot at us!"

He took aim with the PLX at one of the turret towers, and used the scope to follow the wires back to the housing. That was most likely a power source. Time to find out.

"Back blast area clear, rocket out!"

*FWOOOOOSHHH!*

After the awesome moment, Jerit saw RC 212 come up to him and he fired his grenade launcher. The site was a magnificent one but Jerit did not have time to stand around. He yelled

" Let's go! " and grabbed the Padawan by the shirt. Jerit was wondering if RC was thinking this was a real battle and that the boy was new to this sort of stuff.

RC 212 took him to the blast zone where he fired his grenade launcher. They both got into cover. RC said to cover the right flank and Jerit obliged with confident nod. He went to the position RC had pointed out and crouched, aiming down his E-3. He waited for a short amount of time before he saw enemies shooting down towards them. Jerit had repeated the process of aiming and got a decent amount of "kills", but now they started to swarm. The Padawan could not keep up and he didn't have the force! Wait! He had his thermal detonators! He got one from the his bandolier and activated it. He threw it right in the most populated spot.

KABOOOOOM
The blast got most of the enemies with some to spare. That wasn't a problem. Jerit shot most of them before he ran out of ammo in his clip. When he reloaded, he was hit in the leg. Some of his armor locked up around where he was shot. It stung and with the semi locking of his suit, it meant his mobility would decrease.

" I got hit! " Jerit shouted over to RC 212

" They swarmed and I got most of them, one got me in the leg though! "

"Damnit kid. What in the feth!"

He ducked as more rounds ripped by his head. The explosion had managed to take out the power housing, shutting off the turrets. That was the big threat taken care of. The smaller threat was letting Marl and his comrade get over run. RC glanced around and nodded. Then pulled out a screwdriver. This was cheating, but he didn't care.

If they were gonna train as they fought, then he was gonna get real with it.

"Congrats I just patched up your leg. Cuz in a real situation, I would."

He popped the Jedi's locked armor off and clapped a hand on his shoulder, squeezing.

"Keep your shebs in cover until you're ready to fire kid. There's no excuse to get hit in the leg. It means you are way out of cover. Make yourself hard to kill."

He grinned in his helmet. Vaulkren was gonna be pissed.

Oh well.

"Ok, I'm reloading. Spot me a big cluster of em and I'll finish off these munitions."

Cambria's golden eyes opened just as the buzzer sounded. The blue-hued Twi'lek squared her shoulders and reached down with her right hand to grip the blaster pistol holstered off her shapely hip anticipating what was to come next.... the Force void. It always made her feel a bit dizzy and nauseated for a tick, but knowing what to expect was half the battle in working through it and moving forward. A deep breath was taken as the doors opened and blown out just before moving out into the active gauntlet.

In times past, the Jedi Guardian would have jumped out in front of her troops activating with a snap hiss her cerulean blue primary blade to begin deflecting the incoming blaster bolts and give the soldiers behind her some cover to bring their worse to bear down on the enemy positions as they initiated an offensive. But today without the use of the Force, that wouldn't be a very smart thing to do. She might catch a few blaster bolts on her blade, but in all reality the Jedi Knight would be hit in the onslaught, and that wouldn't do anyone any good.

The Rutian Twi'lek let the ones with the big guns take out what they could first, then she picked off the left overs with a steady hand as they pushed forward into the battlefield maze staying center as the others went up the sides.

He heard the soldier cursed and the boy flinched. He didn't want him mad, but this was war. Kill or be killed. RC came over with a screwdriver and popped out Jerit's locked armor. He didn't say anything, on the account of the lack of focus from the shots being rammed into their cover. After the "patch up", RC told him to keep in cover and to spot a cluster so he can fire another explosive. No problem for Jerit.

" Okay, okay, okay.... just get up, and look. That's it. " He said to himself through breathes of nervousness and anxiety.

After counting down from 3, Jerit looked up and saw a group of enemies directly North of him. He fired some shots to get their attention to allow RC 212 to get a clear throw.

" I got their attention on me! After reloading, smoke them! Exactly North of me! Can't miss 'em! " Jerit shouted through the barrage.

Occasionally, the Padawan would get out of cover to see their location. They were absolutely fixed on him. Now he waited for RC....

"Keep your head down rookie!" RC snapped.

He snapped a lot at the Jedi, but in truth he was picking up what the old vet was putting down. He wasn't an idiot and RC could respect that to the highest degree. Too long had he dealt with idiots. The kid called a target and he grunted.

"Use the clock kid. North of you ain't north of me. Where? Twelve, three? Six!"

RC already knew where they were though. It was just him being a hardass. Because hard lessons made hard men, and if the Jedi wanted to survive the poodoo storm of Dark siders rising up from the grave, he'd need every advantage. RC himself had little regard for his life any more. He'd lived through so many karkin empires, they all we just copycats of each other.

"Copy, Back blast area all clear!" He roared as he launched another rocket down range. It exploded, shaking the floor.

Wow this sim is really real!

Then he dropped the launcher and switched to his DC in a smooth motion following up the first rocket with his second grenade.

"P for plenty baby! Boom!"

*Fwoomp!*

Explosions were tearing up the enemy. Now was their chance.

"All squads, take, take take!"

He glanced down and grabbed the Jedi.

"Not us kid. Lay it down. Nice an' thick!"

RC leveled his DC and let loose, emptying the power cell across a broad area. Suppression was the name of the game.

"Marl acknowledge when good! Got you covered!"

A team exercise!? Marl had been so stupid. If he had known this was a team exercise he had several strategies for doing the simulations. RC took command, not a problem, RC seemed to be a good soldier and he trusted a Commando's input. He looked back and the Padawan that was with RC and he was hit in the leg. Marl was gonna move to the left like RC told him to when suddenly he heard a fwish. He ducked down, the snipers in the left guard tower had taken attention to Marl's brashness.

"Not Clear RC, 2 tangos in the guard tower, Requesting suppressing fire overhead!" He yelled over. If RC could cover him long enough to make it to the left side, he might be able to chuck a thermal up there.

The exercise began, and the experienced General already had already determined his location. A favor of more 'ancient' weapons that had seen a resent resurgence, Krayzen had opted to use slugs instead of blaster pistols, armed with a variety of slugs including his own design, a .50 caliber dragon breath slug among others. A user of force sight, Krayzen had preferred to use it, but could not due to the yslamaris. He had decided to use cybernetic eyes that had combat deionizers, and were made of duraplast to block any EMP/Ion/electrical based attacks.

The Dark Knight had tagged along with the others. It felt odd to him, following the orders of other troops. Despite not occupying the top rank in the Iron Empire, the Anzat was usually the one that ordered people. What made it more weird was he was following the orders of a Silver Jedi soldier, as he himself had, during his time in the One Sith, been involved in enemy activities against the faction.

Times do change. Isn't that right, father?

"I got you." he stated, nodding at the trooper, @Marl. The Anzat did as he always did, centuries of experience wielding various weapons coming into play. He used his ripper, the bullet being sent out of the barrel electromagnetically while going through a plasma containment chamber to be clouded with plasma. It was a combination of a ripper, and a verpine shutter gun- an old design he had made during his time with the Sith.

When the slugs reached the two droids, they would be burned.

Dragon breath rounds are the best

As he waited, he awaited for other orders, Krayzen ready to use his full might to help his allies.

Yuroic followed Marl to the left, covering him as he shot in the direction of several droids. The fire seemed crazy and out of control. He wasn't sure what was going on with others. He called out to Marl. We need to regroup. Assess the situation, then move forward. We're scattered and unfocused. I know that at least Jerit and I haven't been in situations like this, and he's hardly shot a blaster. We barely got time to assess our abilities and calculate a plan. Might not be the best time to do that now but we have to. If we head to where RC and Jerit are, all the others to there too, we can formulate a plan instead of just rushing around and not utilising everyone properly.

What do you say? Yuroic looked at the soldier. He was better equipped to handle a situation like this than Yuroic, so Yuroic was willing to follow his lead in this battle. Hiding in cover he fired a few shots before ducking as several bolts just missed his head. He swore, though they wouldn't kill, he bet they still hurt like hell.
