Do the inconclusive and inconsequential duels of invasions and skirmishes bore you? Do you find yourself wanting a little more risk in your life? Do you just have some characters you want to kill off?
Yeah, me too.
So here's the plan: open thread, anyone who wants in for whatever reason can join. You pair off with someone else, and you try to kill each other. I've got three ideas for how do to it.
STANDARD DUEL: Run what you brung. Swords, guns, armor, whatever. You and your opponent face off against each other in a standard duel, and keep going until one of you is dead. If you want to limit Force powers, that's between you and your opponent. If you think they've done something unfair, I'll help mediate, but this style of fight won't be judged. You either win, or you die.
PISTOL DUEL: Old school pistol duel. You and your opponent each starts with 20 hit points. We use the handy dice roller in Discord, and you will take turns rolling 1D20. After every roll, you write out a post, detailing the narrative of the duel. Once someone drops to zero, they're dead.
RUUSAN ROULETTE: Like Russian Roulette, but Star Wars. Again using the Discord dice roller channel, you both roll 1D6. First one to hit a one loses. And dies. After each roll, you write out your post, in which each character places a revolver with one loaded chamber to their head and pulls the trigger. Roll anything but a 1, and you survive until the next round.
So what do you get out of this? Well, for starters, all of your opponent's stuff. Or at least all of their transferable stuff. Might be something they've bought or made that's exclusive to them and won't work for anyone else. At any rate, you get their loot. But what else do you get?
Well, some excitement. There's not much real risk in everyday RP. Even invasions and skirmishes have a safety net: you can't be killed unless you want to be. End of story. And given the pressure not to lose, duels are often inconclusive. People play it safe unless they've got a specific story they want to write. There's no real risk.
This style of story isn't for the faint of heart. There is no safety net. You go in knowing that there's a very good chance that your character can die. What's more, if you lose, you will die. Full stop. Whether or not they stay dead forever is up to you, but you don't go into this without accepting that the worst might happen. That's a powerful story to write, and one that not many RPers ever really do.
Anyway, if you're interested, let me know and I'll fire something up. Feel free to use this thread to look for a dance partner and settle on rules.
