Deep in the wilderness

Sorel Crieff

Ready are you? What know you of ready?
Sorel pored through the freezer. Most items were covered in frost, but thankfully they were put in separate drawers. She pulled out what looked like bags of frozen butter and grated cheese. Then she found some packets of a red meat and also a white meat. The exact origins were unclear, but the shapes looked familiar enough. Then she found some frozen vegetables.

"Will these do?"

Abbey took the items from Sorel quickly and put them in a corner to defrost, then went to work on re-shaping the dough multiple times before simply putting it in a bowl and covering it with a plate. Now it had a while to dance around with itself. With her work so far finished for the time being, she looked over at Sorel, then moved in and gently shrugged her arms. "Thanks for helping, and stuff."

After just a quick moment of her silenced, she opened her arms, expecting a hug.

Sorel felt a bond with this girl. She'd travelled alone for two years and this was the most she'd spoken to any one individual in all that time. But it wasn't loneliness that made her give her new friend a hug. Instead it was genuine empathy. She missed her fellow Padawans and she felt that, under different circumstances, they'd already be best of friends.

"Thanks for taking the lead," she said as their hug ended. "If it was down to me, the food would probably be edible, but entirely uninspiring." And she smiled broadly. "Fate can be funny at times, yes?"

Abbey gently shrugged, loosening her arms before pulling them away and looking down bashfully. It was strange that they would meet - a rebellious teenager and a Jedi Padawan, though Abbey herself was sort of kind of training to be a Jedi too. "I guess it is kind of funny.." She half whispered, looking all the way down to her feet. "I really like you already."

Sorel smiled. It was a long time since she had friends. It was also a long while since she'd had anyone to talk to. She'd lived a solitary life for the past couple of years and apart from the occasional conversation, spent most of the time in silence - only her own voice breaking the silence as she talked to herself.

But now she had a real-life person to chat to, and hoped she remembered all the social rules - not to hog the conversation, not to fill gaps that didn't need filling yet not to leave awkward silences for too long. So she busied herself around the kitchen and made small talk as she went along. "And I like you too. Oh, a radio!" She turned on the device she found in a cupboard and pressed buttons to cycle through local stations. "What sort of music do you like?"

What the heck is music..? Abbey stared at Sorel for a long moment, opening and closing her mouth a few times before a single set of words finally left her hesitating lips. "The... kind that makes me want to say yeah that's music." She quickly went to work on creating the pie again, to avoid all of the awkwardness she had just created for herself.

Sorel had spent the last two years by herself. Music and talk stations had been pretty much her only company. Plus she loved to dance. So she found a station that was middle of the road. Not too heavy, in case it offended Abbey and not too dull in case it made her fall asleep. So she found a modern popular music station and started to sign along with the track and inevitably started to move with the music too. She watched Abbey return to creating the food and smiled. Life was pretty darned good right now.

"If the singing or dancing annoy you, just let me know. I've been used to being by myself, so no-one to criticise me, or tell me my singing sucks."

The girl only nodded and kneaded the dough softly. Bit by bit, she had created her pizza, and then the next with a similar fashion. After putting it in the oven and walking about to get a drink, she came back and took out the cooked pies and set them out to cool. "Food is ready..."

There was always something special about things you could not do yourself - magical almost. Sorel, like any Jedi, could move things with her mind, or hold her breath for an indefinite period of time - but making a pizza? It was beyond her and as she saw the raw ingredients take shape and then transform into something so wonderful was a joy to behold. And the smells were simply adding to the fun of it all - and her hunger of course.

She gave Abbey a big smile. "You're a wizard with flour - do you know that? What to have first though, that's the question. Maybe a little of everything?" She found some plates and wiped them before handing one to Abbey, along with a knife. "You should do the honours, after all, they're your creations."
