SPECIAL FEATURES

Twin Quadex Power Core

Strengths:

Heavy Firepower: With six barrels capable of continuous fire for up to a minute and a half with a large amount of energy behind each shot, the ET-6 is a powerful addition to any ship’s arsenal.

Power Supply: With its own individual power supply independent from that of its host ship thanks to two Quadex power cores, the ET-6 can open and sustain fire on enemy targets with deadly amounts of energy behind each shot, all while eliminating the risk of drawing too much power from its host ship’s reactor.

Range: Bolts fired from the battery carry over serious distances, and while it’s more powerful at closer ranges, they can still prove to be dangerous.

Weaknesses:

Cooling: While the ET-6 can provide a heavy amount of firepower for a single ship, it builds a significant amount of heat per shot. In order to provide a significant amount of power per shot while keeping the system from overheating, the barrels fire one at a time for six shots per salvo, with each barrel unable to fire again until the final shot has been taken. At one shot per second, and with four seconds of down-time before the first barrel can be fired after the sixth, this means that it can fire six shots in a nine second period. To facilitate this, the system will automatically lock into a safe position after one and a half minutes of sustained fire in which it will be unable to fire, allowing it to put out a serious barrage before cooling for four minutes. This can be bypassed with some adjustments to the locking system, however that puts the weapon at risk of catastrophic failure, from either barrel failure to weapon power supply explosion.

Size: At a whopping 152.6m in length the ET-6 is a weapon of considerable size, and as such cannot be fitted on ships smaller than 500m.

Lack of Retrofitting: The system is built to have the barrels protruding from the hull with the power generator and everything else protected within the ship itself. This means that it can only be put on ships designed to carry it, as retrofitting another ship to fit one can cost almost as much as a brand new ship.

Directional Limitations: Due to the size of the system and its construction the ET-6 can only fire forward. It lacks any rotation or height adjustment mechanisms to target ships anywhere other than directly in its forward line of sight, making it nearly impossible to target anything smaller than a frigate, and even those can be difficult to hit unless they’re slow and directly in the path of fire.

DESCRIPTION

With its new place in the Free Worlds Coalition, EODD has its sights set on providing weapons systems not only for its own ships, but for those if their allies, and the ET-6 is the first of a planned many such systems. With six high-powered barrels and a pair of Quadex power cores to supply independent power, the ET-6 is a powerful alternative to a traditional turbolaser complement, providing the power of thirty standard turbolasers in a single emplacement.

With great power comes great spacial requirements, as the system takes up a considerable amount of space due to its six barrels and twin power cores. At just over 150m the system is as large as many corvette class ships, limiting its potential placements to frigate-sized ships or larger. In addition it’s designed for the barrels to aim only in one direction, leaving it unable to target anything other than what is directly in front of the battery. Ships designed to carry this weapon would need to be designed to accommodate for this, with the optimal positioning for it being within the ship itself, protected by the hull, with the barrels from the laser actuators forward protruding from the hull.

Its main firing pattern is a full barrage, with each barrel firing one after the other in a row. This can only be sustained for a short period of time, approximately a minute and a half, as the weapon builds up significant heat due to the high amount of power used per shot. To prevent catastrophic weapon failure, a safety mechanism is built in to lock down the system, preventing it from firing for a minimum of four minutes in order to cool the weapon after a minute and a half of sustained fire. Of course to avoid the need for the long cooling period less power-intensive bursts can be fired, such as every other barrel or individually activated barrels selected by a crew member, either of which can allow certain barrels to cool while the others fire before switching back at the cost of only half the amount of firepower being able to bring to bear.

This looks pretty solid.

Modularity: Can be modified to fire ion blasts rather than turbolaser blasts

Tell me a little bit more about this. While we're dealing with fictional technology, the operating mechanisms behind ion cannons and turbolasers appear to be pretty different.

[member="Gir Quee"] thanks for pointing that out, I actually hadn't done all too much research on the way ion cannons operate and assumed they were generally the same operating principle. Having that ability to switch isn't an idea I'm dedicated to so I can remove it and get something up separately for a capital-grade ion weapon.

Just went over it again.

Rate of Fire: Low Stopping Power: Very High

It looks like this is missing the "Recoil:" field here. I realize that this probably won't have a huge effect on this sub, but we can't omit parts of the template from submissions.
