'DON'T SPLIT THE UK UP, THINK OF THE LAST THREE HUNDRED YEARS TOGETHER!'
I didn't meant to convey that statement in the form of buzzwords and / or meaningless phrases such as "B-b-b-but we've been buddies for years! What 'bout muh friendship! Muh World Wars! Muh Football! Muh Falkland Islands solidarity!" and other such nonsense without any weight behind them. My apologize if it came off that way.

Scotland has it's own culture and history, independent of those from England, Wales, and Ireland, as well as the United Kingdom at large. But they have all been merged and meshed together over the centuries, to some degree or another, and gave birth to the larger, and dominant, British culture. Alongside this, came the merger of administration, economical sectors, political sectors, armed forces, etcetera, etcetera. Splitting the country in two will, I imagine, create a ridiculous amount of damage financially and administratively to all members of the UK, not to mention be used as a platform for one-point extremist parties on either side of the spectrum to prop themselves up, and on a more personal point of view note, give Brussels more power. I also don't consider an economy that is heavily reliant on it's oil supply, one that will only last a century and a half at best with just current consumption outputs, one capable of properly supporting a country in the long run

But hey, at the end of the day, I'm glad you at least give enough of a damn to get angry about this stuff. Too many people are either apathethic to politics nowdays, or have an attitude of "Whatever is on the tube is the absolute truth, no questions asked."

Haha, don't worry about it. A lot of people threw around the past three-hundred years together as a reason to stay together, I mean it is a subject where it is difficult to cut out emotional ties of the past but the Braveheart cack on the other side of the campaign fence was just as bad. Both sides fully utilized history as an emotional blackmail machine in the debate.

I don't disagree that the split would have caused damage, I can't imagine how long it would have actually taken to get everything up and running in an administrative sense what with Scotland having to hold a new election to decide government. It would have been tough, fiscally and in other areas like you mentioned prior, but I and 45% of the population were ready to accept that initial struggle and risk for the hope of a more equal Scotland.

However, steering back to the EU! North Sea Oil is not Scotland's only economic gem! Naturally being surrounded by the sea brings in the fishing industry and that's an industry that the EU love to slap a good sanction on.

Fair? Unfair? I have no idea, I'm totally not educated enough on that subject to warrant educated opinions. :p

Actually the fishing raises a good point I keep forgetting to ask. If Scotland were to separate from Britain, would Britain still be able to lay claims to the fishing shores / areas surrounding Scotland? I imagine they would pull something out of the bag with military bases and docks on Scottish ground

Honestly, the fishing was never a point that was brought up in public so I'm not very up to scratch, it got eclipsed by currency and oil. I'm unsure which areas in England are big for the fishing industry. Peterhead in the North East of Scotland is our fishing hub and I'm sure they trawl in the same area as Norwegian vessels. Not one hundred percent on this but I think English vessels would be free to trawl.

When it came to military and docks however, there was only one thing on everybody's lips. I'll just leave the link here.

It's not necessarily what areas are big for fishing for England, it's more about which areas Britain can extend control over through the use of military installations. Bases and ports will be one of the few things that will not be ceded by Britain in the case of an independent Scotland under any circumstance and, say, if you have several military docks near major Scottish fishing grounds, then you can start karking around the area under the pretense of supplying bases, patrolling British waters, etcetera to disrupt the fishing and subtly try to hamper one asset of the Scottish economy to get them back on your payroll.

A bit busy at the moment, so I probably wrote this like a spaz and dosn't make that much sense. Sorry 'bout that.

skin, bone, and arrogance
In this, as in all things, Mrs. Thatcher was right.
