- Highly destructive primary weaponry fire a continuous beam of energy for several seconds. Depending on how the ship and the target ship are moving, this beam could hit a single spot on the enemy ship or could rake across the surface of the ship. Should the beam be kept on a particular spot, the beam is highly damaging to shields and can sometimes penetrate through to damage the hull of the ship long before the shields fail completely. Should the beam rake across the surface of an unshielded ship, the attack can prove highly damaging as the beam can damage large sections of a ship in a single salvo.
- Primary shields recover quickly from being drained and excel at withstanding numerous strikes from lesser craft
- Secondary shields are slow to recover from being drained, but offer significantly greater protection against high power weaponry than the Primary Shields
- Primary Shields can be projected over another nearby craft for a brief period of time, boosting the defenses of the neighboring craft at the expense of the host craft
- High grade steel construction affords the craft exceptional structural integrity
- Composite armor plating stands up to high power energy weapons very well
- Capable of diverting power away from primary Ion Drive to overcharge weapon systems, affording the ship a temporary +1 Rating to Armament at the expense of a temporary -1 Rating to Speed
- Beam weaponry have a low rate of fire and a long reload between shots
- Beam weaponry that does not 'rake' a ship can often do little damage to lightly armored targets as the beam over-penetrates the hull
- Primary shields are more likely to be pierced by high powered weaponry than standard shields
- Secondary shields are slow to recharge
- When projecting the ship's primary shields on a nearby ship, the host ship must rely solely upon its secondary shields for protection
- Built from a high density metal, these ships are heavy and slow to move and maneuver
- Weapon Power Converter cannot be rapidly activated and deactivated (IE, no rapid toggling of stats mid-post)
- Though the ship's rating allows for a single squadron of starfighters, this space is instead used for the STARSCAN Suite
Named for a city on Cmaoli Di, the Ferronel-class Heavy Frigate is a heavily armed and armored warship used both by the Pimbrellan League and allied nations throughout the Outer Rim Coalition. Known for their exotic beam weaponry, the Pimbrellans have equipped their Ferronel-class Heavy Frigate with a suitable armament for their people. The ship sports three turrets spread along the dorsal and ventral sides, each armed with twin beam weapons of incredible strength. Each of these weapons emits a beam of energy comparable to what one would expect from a heavy turbolaser. However, this beam of energy persists for several seconds and do not detonate into an explosive blast when impacting a hostile ship. Where the energy bolts of Turbolasers and Blasters are highly contained within electromagnetic fields that falter and detonate upon impact, the containment field of these Beam weapons retain their strength after point of contact. This retention, along with the effect of a sustained beam, makes these weapons highly damaging to very large targets, as the beams are capable of penetrating deep into the hull of a target ship and causing wide swaths of a ship to suffer structural damage. This also makes the weapons more likely to cause critical damage to internal components of a hostile ship. The downside to this though, is that the weapons have difficulty with particularly thick armor plating on fast moving ships. Similarly, as a weapon with a long delay between shots, the weapon can struggle to bring down certain types of shields. Supporting this primary battery are a number of vertical-launching torpedo tubes that can fire a wide range of ordnance packages and numerous point defense laser cannons.
The Ferronel-class Heavy Frigate is also equipped with exceptional defensive system. Starting with a sturdy hull of dense, durable metals, the ship possesses a great deal of structural integrity and can withstand significant internal damage before losing combat effectiveness. So sturdy is the hull of the ship that it can withstand severe gravitational strain before risking failure. Adding to this protection would be the composite armor plating that encases the ship. Made of a proprietary combination of alternating layers of Plexisteel and Duraplast, the Ferronel-class is capable of shrugging off surprisingly powerful blows from energy based weaponry. Similarly, the shape of the hull and the thickness of the composite plating lends favorably to heavy angling against opposing ships that make heavy use of projectile weaponry.
The shields of the Ferronel-class are as exceptional as any other aspect of the ship's design. The design incorporates a redundant shielding system that combings two wildly different types of deflector shielding. The first of these shields is a low-strength shield that regenerates rapidly, where the second of the shields is a high-strength shield that regenerates slowly. With this combination, the ship's shields are able to keep up with the sustained damage of small-caliber weaponry utilizing the primary shields and can rely upon the strength of the secondary shields to prevent penetration by the intermittent strikes of larger-caliber weaponry. More interestingly though, the shields of this ship are capable of being projected over a short distance to cover and protect a nearby allied ship. While this act may leave the host ship reliant solely upon the strength of its secondary shields for protection, it is an act that can save an allied ship from destruction and provides an exceptional enhancement to the overall battle performance of a Pimbrellan League fleet as a whole. When this is used in conjunction with the advanced power distribution system of the ship, a fleet that incorporates numerous Ferronel-class Heavy Frigate is capable of responding to a wide range of shifting battlefield conditions and poses a significant threat upon the battlefield.
