Braze had been the last name drawn from the box and was awkwardly trying to tie his headband around his left wrist using his right hand and his mouth. He looked up at Loomi when she greeted him, and a muffled response came from him as he tried to reply. "Hfeyy... Loofmi." He didn't seem too energetic but appeared to be taking this seriously as he looked over who all was on their team. After a few long moments, Braze realized his team was entirely girls. He blinked at this realization, drew a slow, heavy breath, and let it out slowly, trying not to dwell on that as he glanced toward Aris Noble, Nir Si, and Ayhan. Knowing they had to pick a team leader but realizing there were only girls, he decidedly didn't want to pick any of them, fearing someone might be offended or get their feelings hurt. He frowned at this realization, feeling somewhat envious of Nir Si and Aris Noble for their team being slightly more diverse.

Braze's mind went fuzzy, and he became ten kinds of flustered as his thoughts began to race. Deciding, he chose to just ask Loomi, "Who do you think our leader should be?" Braze asked, figuring that way, he couldn't have anyone be mad at him for suggesting anyone else. Girls were complicated, after all!

As he waited for Loomi's response, Braze's attempts at tying the headband turned into a comical display of poor dexterity, or the lack thereof. His tongue stuck out slightly in concentration, a universal sign of someone deeply focused on the task at hand. Every so often, he'd pause, assess his handiwork, and then, with a sigh, start over. It was a simple action, yet it spoke volumes about his earnestness and the endearing effort he put into even the smallest tasks.

His cheeks flushed a light shade of pink when he realized that perhaps everyone's eyes were on him.

As the padawans spread out in a semi-circle around their mentors for this trip she’s surprised to find Ayhan beside her, his steps quiet even as he’d traversed the undergrowth to stand at her side. The elation she feels easily shows on the smile that tugs the edges of her lips, at least until a glance upwards confirms that the Firronthix is paying zero attention to her. Reality sets in just as Master Raene praises her question, asking the white-haired girl to be patient and listen to the words of Knight Zenth as he addressed the group next. His words echo within her ears and, while the overall message is still gathered from them, her gaze lingers instead on the ground by her feet as her thoughts are absorbed elsewhere.

Mahsa had hoped the distance between them would’ve mended whatever riff began to form shortly after they’d arrived at the Temple for the first time, but instead she’d found that Ayhan had only become harder still to read. Her hand unconsciously reached for the small river stone in her pocket, focusing her mind on the tactile feedback it offered as the girl attempted to ignore the throbbing in her chest.

One by one they were called forth to relinquish their sabers and receive their headbands, hers a haunting shade of crimson that caused Mahsa to pause before the padawan was reminded of where she was and rushed back to her spot. The fabric was carefully tied over her head, the white bangs on her forehead concealing most of it from view, before her gaze swept over the others that now sported the same color. The Cathar was among them, along with two other white-haired individuals—Ariana and Aris if her memory wasn’t playing tricks on her today.

She’d been about to step in their direction when Ayhan was called up next, curiosity causing the Kazelrrian to hang back instead. The last red headband was given to the Firronthix who quickly fastened to his arm, the jerkiness of his movements a sharp contrast to the Ayhan she’d always known. Eyebrows furrowed in concern as the girl's gazed shifted upwards, noticing the tense lines and far-off look in his face, before his side brushed against her own as he stood closer than before—the touch generating a jolt of static that surprised the Kazelrrian before the last piece of the puzzle fell into place.

She’d become accustomed to the tightness in her chest whenever Ayhan was nearby, a byproduct of her own fears and insecurities that the Kazelrrian continued to handle in the only way she knew—stuffing them deep down and pretending they’d never existed. But the uneasy feeling that rapidly began to weigh down her shoulders had been new and, try as she might, the Kazelrrian hadn’t been able to shake off the intensity as it grew.

And that’s because they hadn’t all been her own.

"Ayhan—"
"Padawan Ayhan."

The gentle whisper of her voice is quickly drowned out when Master Raene called for the Firronthix, causing the girl to quickly relinquish the light hold of her fingers as they’d pulled against the fabric of Ayhan’s robe. As the Jedi called for him she would take a step back, certain that her presence would be unwanted by both and her words would do more harm than good.

Anneliese grabbed her blue band, set her saber into the lockbox and grabbed her survival kit — she moved back over to the blue team that had now gathered, and lookedaround at her teammate's, Braze raising the question which nagged at the back of her mind as well — who would lead. Putting her band between her teeth, she removed her first layer, shedding down to a simple tan tank top. Her hands came up, bunching her unruly hair up and tying it up into a messy ponytail. Cringing inwardly, she put the headband on top of her head.

Kneeling down, she dug through her kit — nothing that everything was there, proceeded to slap her Medtracer onto her wrist and the nodded to herself. Standing up and slinging the kit around her shoulder and securing it, Anneliese looked towards Braze. “I’m not really sure who wants to be, or who is best suited for the role of leader — but, I will say, maybe we should just start out by stating who each of us is, just to be sure we all know names…” She paused and then continued. “Then — we each can give our strengths, as far as how we feel it’ll help this particular mission — lastly one thought on what we think our base camp should look like.” Looking around she cleared her throat. “I’ll go first… Most of you know me, but my name is Anneliese. My strengths lie in tracking and survival methods — I also feel I can hold my own in combat — at least for this training scenario.” Val had been pushing her to do better — she felt she could do this. “As far as base camp — I was looking at the map, and while I know it’s a bit of a trek — but, grids F1, G1 and H1 all provide high ground, it would definitely be an advantage… this area also has several areas of hidden benefits so we’ll be able to stage ambushes .” Anneliese smiled — then looked at everyone. “Next person?”

"Padawan Ayhan," one of the groups chaperones called over to the Firronthix, who's head snapped in his direction. The Jedi gestured for Ayhan to come to him, and the Padawan did without comment. It wouldn't be the first time he'd be admonished for something after all. Though he hadn't heard the Kazel beside him whisper his name, he felt the soft tug of his sleeve between her fingertips as the fabric slipped away. He didn't bother looking back, nor giving any sign he'd noticed. But he hadn't shook her off either.

Ayhan and the Jedi, Raene he recalled, stepped further and further away from the gathered group of Padawans, and some small, superficial part of the Firronthix worried that they were watching him, ready to pounce and label him a pariah. Raene began softly, and Ayhan was about to open his mouth and assert he was perfectly fine, before he realized the Jedi had more to say. So Ayhan allowed the man to continue.

A path fraught with uncertainty. Jedi or no, that seemed to be Ayhan's lot in life, the Firronthix thought to himself as he listened. Ayhan even resisted the urge to snarl at the thought of reaching out to anyone else for help. To let them see weakness. Maybe that did make him a coward, as the Jedi seemed to suggest. Or just a fool.

Though hard eyes stared back at the effeminate man, something pooled behind their dark irises. A deep, murky depth, the heart of every living creatures shared fears moving in a frantic, frenetic dance.

"I can handle it, Master," Ayhan said when given the first opportunity, without hesitation. "I'm fine to proceed." Almost like the perfect soldier he'd been bred to be. But the conviction he spoke with was as much his own as the Order who sought to hone him into...something...Whatever it was, Ayhan refused to allow anything to hinder him.

The second time, it had become clear that the Jedi had finished speaking, as he laid a comforting hand on the student's shoulder. "I appreciate the concern, Master," Ayhan said, hands clasped behind his back now. "But I'll be fine." Ayhan looked back over his shoulder, over at the other Padawans who had already begun to assemble into their respective teams, and for the first time, Ayhan noticed that Mahsa shared the same headband color as he. As did that Cathar from before. "I'm not sure that this will qualify as 'fun' for me," Ayhan said, words bearing double-meaning. "But I'll manage. Thank you again."

Presuming himself dismissed, Ayhan made his way towards the team he'd been assigned, pausing to drop his saber into the lockbox, before approaching the others and stopping beside Mahsa once more. Humorously, it seemed they were all bore white hair. "So, have you all decided who will be leading you snow-tops?" Ayhan asked.

Tirin listened intently to the young man before him, his gaze sharp and discerning. The gravity of the situation was not lost on him, and he understood the importance of monitoring this individual closely. "Very well, if that is truly what you want," he responded, his voice steady and measured. Despite his outward calm, Tirin was acutely aware of the youth's quick decision-making, noting how he seemed to have a predetermined answer without giving much thought to other options.

Tirin was no stranger to reading people, and although he couldn't pinpoint exactly what was going through the young man's mind, he sensed an undercurrent of turmoil. It was clear to him that the youth was far from 'simply fine,' despite any assurances to the contrary. This realization only solidified his resolve to keep a vigilant eye on him. Should he observe any behavior that raised red flags, Tirin was prepared to intervene and pull the young man aside for a more in-depth conversation.

Give up his lightsaber, huh?

Aris frowned a little as he did hand it over, but it seemed counter intuitive to take away their lightsabers in a forest like this where there could be unseen dangers. Safety was a huge part of it, right? Well, the Master's here weren't going to let them just get hurt, so he had some trust in that. He brought a smile as he took the headband to wrap around his head as a headband.

The only troubling part was the teams. Aris glanced to his own. He didn't know the people here. Nir he at least saw some times, but he certainly didn't know them at all. On the other hand; Vera, Loomi, Annelise, Braze, he knew them better. And it was clear that Loomi and Braze had a bond with one another. In terms of initial synergizing, they certainly had the advantage.

"So, have you all decided who will be leading you snow-tops?"

"There is no snow in this portion of Endor."

Aris tilted his head as he glanced to Ayhan. That was the other part of this though. He was the youngest of this group. By far. "We haven't talked about anything yet, so I think you're in time for planning."

Ariana eyed her red bandana, her frown grew as she tried it on, her hand dug into her trouser for a small slate mirror to inspect her appearance. After a few moments she put her mirror away and shook her head vigorously before wearing a neutral expression across her face. Happy thoughts Ari, just don’t think about it. With that out of the way she approached the rest of her red bandana teammates, outside of Aris, she probably had fewer words spoken to them compared to Aris.

Which wasn’t a lot in the first place, so communication will take time to grow between us. Ariana though was confident in their chances against the better coloured blue team. She listened to one of their teammates, Ayhan, ask about who would be their leader but also included a comment on the majority of the team’s hair colour. Snow tops? Hah! Ariana placed her left hand against her mouth to quiet her chuckle.

But when Aris responded with a matter of fact that there was snow on this part of Endor, Ariana’s laugh escaped and she took a moment to compose herself. Note to self, keep metaphors and similes to a minimum.

“Well, I suggest we let the Force choose the leader. Put our names in a box again and let one of the Masters pick a name.” Ariana wasn’t one to rely totally on fate when it came to important decisions, but she hoped the randomness would help.

If we can all come together and help whoever gets picked it would be a great boon for us. Ariana was a poor student but she did remember her brother explaining a bit about sociology. The appearance of a fair system would allow those chosen by said system find leadership quite easier.

Of course if someone is picked who really doesn’t want it. . . well surely the Force wouldn’t do such a thing, surely.. Ariana smiled to the rest of her teammates, “-Unless someone here feels up for it already, I’ll be more than ready to dub thee our crimson leader.” Ariana added.

Vera blinked.

Oops, everybody had left to sign up for a team exercise of sorts. Looking down from the tree, she felt a little nervous now. She had already missed signing up, and quite frankly, she was more interested in figuring out her own little adventure. So, rather than joining the exercise, she stood up atop her branch and took a quick sprint before hopping into another tree, then another and another. Mom had taught her how to move between the trees on New Cov — a skill most useful now.

With a grin on her face, Vera remained close enough to the group to not be wandering off alone, but she could still do her own thing for now.

She was going to find those Ewoks, and maybe she'd be able to keep up with what was happening down below as well.

Valin had meticulously gone over the supplies, distributing them to the Padawans one by one. As he reached the end of the pile, an extra blue headband caught his eye—a surplus he hadn't anticipated. With a puzzled frown, Valin scanned the group of young learners gathered before him and quickly realized the discrepancy: someone was missing. His gaze swept across the forest and the encampment's perimeter, extending towards the Redwinds, but the missing Padawan was nowhere to be seen.

Valin wasn't known for his patience with puzzles, but he was aware that Tirin had momentarily stepped aside with another student. That knowledge, however, didn't help him locate the absent Padawan. His concern deepened; they hadn't officially started the exercise, and already one of them had wandered off. This oversight wouldn't reflect well on any of them. He began to scan the treetops, considering the possibility of unseen dangers lurking. The area had been thoroughly scouted beforehand to ensure safety for the Padawans, yet the unpredictable nature of the wilderness meant that situations could change unexpectedly.

Then, a slight movement caught his eye. Relief washed over him as he spotted her—Vera, perched high in a tree, seemingly lost in her own world.
Valin approached the base of the tree, hands on his hips, and looked up at Vera with a mixture of relief and mild reprimand. He remained silent for a few moments, giving her a stern look that silently questioned whether such behavior was condoned by her parents.

"Excuse me, Padawan Vera," Valin called up to her, his voice gentle yet carrying a stern edge, designed to draw her attention back to the matter at hand.
"Do you plan on joining the activity with the rest of your classmates, or do we have a problem here?"

There were no signs that he’d noticed her presence as the Firronthix moved towards the Jedi, the fabric of his sleeve slipping out of her fingers with ease when the Kazelrrian offered no resistance. Her gaze lingered against his back until the pair had walked a considerable distance, before a faint sigh escaped her as Mahsa turned towards the other padawans.

It wasn’t hard to pick out her teammates from the bunch. She’d already spoken to one of them prior to the briefing, and the sharp contrast of the red headband against the snow colored hair of the other two made it easy to spot them. "Well, isn’t this exciting? Looks like the Masters are going all out with this field trip." There was a lightness to her voice as she spoke, though the smile she offered them was no different from the one Nir Si had received before.

His scent tickled her nostrils as Ayhan finally rejoined the activity, and her back straightened instinctively as the Firronthix stopped beside her once more. Once could’ve been a fluke, twice she could’ve passed off as just a coincidence, but three times…? Curious eyes glanced upwards as a million questions swam within those golden pools, though they were quickly forgotten when he finally spoke.

"So, have you all decided who will be leading you snow-tops?"
"Hmph, look who’s talking."

Brows furrowed as a hand reached for his hair, fingers brushing against the silvery tips accusingly with a familiarity that was normally reserved for siblings or very close friends. It took a moment before her brain finally caught up with her actions, and the Kazelrrian quickly pulled her hand back to her side as Aris joined the conversation. His comment was met with a burst of laughter from Ariana, and Mahsa was thankful for the small exchange between them that allowed her to focus on calming down the erratic beating within her chest.

"I-I’m fine with that idea," She nodded in Ariana's direction, voicing out her support for their suggestion. In the past the Kazelrrian wouldn’t have hesitated to recommend Ayhan for leadership, but right now she didn’t feel like pushing her luck any further. "Unless someone’s dying to have the role right now, of course."

One of their was just as tall as Ayhan, and carried herself with a kind of grace that the man was unfamiliar with, despite the obvious injury she must've suffered at some point or another. Somehow, she still had it in her to laugh when the youngest made it clear he did not understand humor, or at least Ayhan's particular brand. The Firronthix looked at the boy blankly, trying to decide how best to interact him, only to be distracted by Mahsa Mahsa . Ayhan gave her an annoyed look from the corner of his eye as he went to brush her hand away, though she retracted before he made contact.

Both of the females seemed to not have any preference on who should lead, but while Ayhan did not know the others well, he did know at least one. "Mahsa and I have...extensive experience with this sort of thing," the Firronthix said, gesturing towards the girl at his side. "So, unless someone has any objections." Ayhan gave the Kazelrrian another look from the corner of his eye as he crossed his arms. "I'd like to nominate Mahsa."

Rayia listened carefully to Tirin and Valin as they explained the exercise. It was relatively simple in essence. A team based exercise surrounding the capture and defense of an objective, whilst also finding sustainable resources of food and water to help them survive. All in all, it wasn't unlike the exercises that Rayia had participated in as a kit in her tribe back on Weik. Only with perhaps one crucial difference. 'Well, no. I suppose there are two or three crucial differences,' Rayia thought to herself as she studied the environment and people around her. Said differences being that the Felacatian wasn't surrounded by her own people, that the exercise wasn't taking place in the savannah, and that... well, there had been real consequences to failing an exercise such as this. The tribe needed to protect its precious resources. Thirst was a very real danger in the savannah, and posed far more potent of a threat than pirates ever had to the Felacatians. When Rayia's mother, the Feral Queen, had ordered the hunt of any pirates attempting to enslave a member of her tribe, others quickly learned to avoid provoking the simple Felacatians of the plains at any cost.

Following Annelise, Rayia walked forwards and deposited Light Fang along with the other sabers. '...Wait, Mentor Valin likely meant to leave anything harmful within the box,' Rayia thought to herself. Her fingers twitched as she grabbed for her pouch. After a moment, Rayia began to pull other things out of the red, leather, drawstring pouch at her waist. Vials of murky liquids and sharpened knives, clutched between cupped palms, clunked softly as Rayia deposited them onto the table. The murky liquids frothed ominously within their thick, glass vials, bubbling around small leaves and the iridescent corpses of insects native to Weik. 'That should be the last of it. Though I think the vines and ambusher fruits are probably safe enough to use,' Rayia thought to herself and cast a critical eye over her remaining equipment.

Rayia's ear flicked as she caught the last of Valin's speech that proclaimed safety was paramount, and that they would be equipped with Med Tracers in the event of an emergency. Whilst Rayia did not break down into a panic like one of the padawans on the other team, she had her own concerns about the parameters of the exercise. Her mouth thinned into a pale line as she contemplated how best to phrase her the issue that concerned her. 'Come now, you simply march up to Mentor Tirin and say you're concerned you'll become something of a monster out of a children's story,' a voice in her head mocked sarcastically. Rayia shook her head vehemently, ears flattening back as the hairs on her neck rippled. The stray, chiding thought had been self-deprecating, and yet completely accurate. If enough stress was inflicted to where the beast within woke up, this exercise could very much become something out of a horror holo-film. She had been working with Mentor Jonyna and Mentor Valery to control her bestial half, but her efforts were still in their infancy. 'If I'm going to participate, I need some sort of reassurance that I will not harm others,' she thought to herself. 'Damn it, and I promised myself I would never use it again...' Rayia squared her shoulders, ears drooping in resignation. She would seek Tirin out in just a moment, but first there was something she needed to do.

Rayia nodded at Annelise as she suggested that they worry about figuring out who should lead them after introducing themselves and their skills. As Annelise offered her skills and a suggestion for where they should make their base, Rayia studied the map carefully. It seems that the two of them weren't so different in their skillset or assessment. "I would agree with your suggestion for our base. It has clear access to a water and food source given its proximity to the river. We must be careful that we are not trapped against it though." Rayia cast her golden, feline eyes around the group once more. "My name is Rayia. I was a huntress and blacksmith, so I can track and hunt as well. Moreover, I can design traps and weapons for us to use. I have fought before." Rayia then winked, as the corner of her lip tugged upwards into a slight smirk. "There are a few more things, but that's the jist of it. Now if you might excuse me a second," she said as she departed from the group.

"Mentor Tirin, may I speak to you? I have some... questions," Rayia said, flagging down the man with a wave of her hand.

Nir slowly raised his hand. "I uh...grew up on a jungle planet. I'm not opposed to Mahsa leading, just...offering an alternative." He had plenty of experience in places like this, even if it was technically a different environment. "I've lead some hunting parties too."

Really, he just didn't wanna fall behind. He was always one to be the leader, and yet he hadn't been a follower in a long time. The boy's nerves struck him slightly at the thought.

Arms crossed over her chest after Mahsa had retracted her touch, hands tightly tucked against her sides to prevent any further mishaps. A relieved sigh quietly slipped through her lips as Ayhan spoke to the group again, his voice controlled and measured just like she’d always remembered it—

Burden.

Lips pressed into a thin lip as the Kazelrrian did her best to ignore the quiet snarl in the back of her mind, absently nodding as her name spilled from the Firronthix’ mouth. Their life back in the Cage had taught them many of the lessons and skills the padawans were meant to learn today—and plenty of others that Mahsa would’ve been more than happy to forget.

"So, unless someone has any objections." A faint smile tugged the edges of her mouth as she nodded in agreement, if Ayhan became their leader she was certain they’d have nothing to worry about—"I'd like to nominate Mahsa."

"Mhmm—w-wait, what?" It took a second for her brain to process the words, her nodding finally interrupted as the Kazelrrian head snapped to look at Ayhan. Brows furrowed in confusion as a finger pointed towards herself, the question never voiced but impossible to miss.

"I'm not opposed, if she's up for it." A vote of confidence came from the youngest face in their group, before the Cathar had slowly raised his hand. While he’d voiced support for her as well, Nir Si also offered an alternative… an escape that, for a very real moment, Mahsa considered taking.

"I-If everyone’s in agreement," The tightness in her chest caused her voice to waver, the Kazelrrian quietly clearing her throat as her gaze swept over each of the party members—lingering on Ayhan the longest, before finally resting on Ariana. "I don’t mind leading."

Burden.

She could only hope this wouldn’t be a mistake.

"Who do you think our leader should be?"

"Golly, I dunno," Loomi frowned. "I could, if nobody else wanted to..."

Wait, had she actually said that? A bit of a flustered look came over her as she quickly scrambled to recompose herself. That was terribly egotistical of her, to think that anyone would want to follow her. No, she should think about this more rationally. Realistically, somebody present was far more qualified to lead the group then she was. Which was probably...

"My vote would go to Rayia though," she decided. "She's the most experienced, I think."

Yeah, that made sense.

"There are a few more things, but that's the jist of it. Now if you might excuse me a second,"

"Oh," Loomi frowned. "I... Hmmm..."

And she was gone. That didn't bode well, did it?

Ariana smiled happily, it seemed they wouldn’t need to rely on randomness and have the Force choose for them. With both Masha and Nir stepping up we have a good set to help us. She glanced around between both Mahsa and Nir and gave them a single thumb up.

“Well, since this test is also to give us experience I would like to have Mahsa be our 1st Captain and Nir can be our alternative should Masha lose her headband and we need to reorganize our chain of command to eliminate confusion.” Ariana offered to hopefully quickly get the team organized and ready to begin.

“So, do we have consensus for our Scarlet Queen?” She asked, her smile making her appear quite eager. "Those dastardly blue berries won't know how to handle us."

Ariana was the last to voice their approval, even going a step further to provide a sensible solution should the Kazelrrian get her headband stolen during the challenge. “So, do we have consensus for our Scarlet Queen?” She’d been halfway into nodding when the unexpected nickname tickled her ears, a faint blush quickly spreading through her features before Mahsa cleared her throat.

"G-Guess that settles it, then." The idea of leading a team hadn’t crossed her mind, but somehow Mahsa found herself in a role she’d never taken before—no, not somehow. Ayhan had caused this, but why…? A quiet sigh escaped her lips, there were too many questions without answers swimming in her head—but now she had a job to do, so they would have to wait. "Everyone, make sure your datapads and tracers are working properly."

Her own med tracer was carefully adjusted onto her slim wrist, taking a moment to ensure everything was as it should be, before Mahsa’s attention turned to the datapad they’d been provided. A simpler and restricted model compared to the one she’d surrendered to the Jedi along with her lightsabers, but all the necessary information for the challenge had already been downloaded into it. It didn’t take long to find the blinking blip that marked their current location (B7), making a mental note of where the [ Neutral Zone ] was located, before her eyes quietly roved to three particular sections of the map. F1… G1… H1… Her sensitive ears often caught bits and pieces of the conversations around her, and today proved no different when Blue Team chose to discuss part of their strategy nearby.

Quietly the datapad was flipped and presented to her teammates as a slender finger gently tapped the uppermost part of the map, pulling their attention towards the location the other group had been contemplating.

"Let’s walk and talk, hmm?" A pointed look was given towards Ayhan, the only one in their group she trusted would easily pick up her thoughts… though Mahsa wasn’t certain he’d actually play along. Her attention shifted towards the other three, a sweet smile on her lips as she purred out a thought. "Might as well take advantage of the time and do a little sight-seeing~"

The locations Blue Team—or the Blueberries, as Ariana had dubbed them—had pointed out were certainly appealing, though the topmost left area (B1) of the map had also called out to the Kazelrrian. Regardless of their choice they would still have to travel north for either of them. For now it’d be in their benefit to get a headstart while their opponents debated over their team leader, and she’d rather avoid leaking their own strategy unintentionally to them too.

"How about it S-Scarlets," Was it too late to ask for the ground to swallow her whole, please? "Let’s get going, shall we?"
