Flagship thread

So I want to build the Republic a Flagship and have a thread on hand ready to go.

If we do this who all is interested?

I know Caid was up for it before his LOA, can we get the senate and others into this?

I also have had a few Corporate Alliance members who said they might join to offer funding in posts to support the creation with us.

I cannot possibly stress enough just how crucial it is that you do not wing this, thinking that you can just beat an invasion-sized development thread into submission by dumping on a fethton of writers on it, because it is not an invasion! This could very easily stray off course, very easily lose steam. You need a roadmap for how things will go, and I can offer input to that end.

So, don't take this as my offering to help with the thread itself - I need to think on that a while longer - but what exactly is your plan for this, beyond offers of funding from outsiders and people from outside to help with posts? Do you even have a plan?

If so, I'd like to hear it. I'm sure everyone else would, too. If not... well, there's a lot of work to do before you even lay down the first posts. Please understand that I'm merely concerned, and I'm not trying to tear you a new one or anything. I just don't want anyone's efforts to go to waste.

The thread would involve me working with the corporations and senate possibly if they're up for to do funding and updates on the construction.

Meanwhile everyone else gets the fun task of stopping a slicer who at first we thought stole a different project's data, but will be revealed to be the logistic plans for the Flagship itself.

Jedi, Soldiers, and others would be free to chase him down and catch any other criminals possibly sheltering them while they look for a buyer while they're at it.

Not to mention everyone else is free to play security in case anyone else shows up to intervene. Sounds savy?

I may or not have mad a mistake and ran into the issue of losing the work in one thread by not paying attention. its work will go into a different ship.

[member="Camellia Swift"] - I'd like to propose something, if I may - a lot of single-strand plot threads like that on a scale this large die down real quick. Take it from my experience here as an oldschool RPJ.

I feel that this would be well-served as a training thread on a small scale in addition to the plot, for those interested -developing strategy for large ships, training up some new military characters, what have you. It'd be a chance for us old-hand fleeters to teach the new school how to fleet, and 'practise' so to speak for the new guys on a small scale. I also understand there's been some fleeting-related drama recently due to the idea of the numbers game. Might be a good chance to show how to turn fleeting away from that numbers game, if anyone's down.

I honestly have no idea what you just said because it doesn't seem relevant if you want to cut down the size of the thread?

This is a flagship thread, in which we are trying to do as the rules state: Do a single thread, of 400 posts or greater, with a minimum of 7 unique writers, in which the faction produces or constructs said flagship.

I don't get what you're trying to do making the thread smaller to train new people. If you could explain how this in context would help I feel it would make more sense. If you're saying we should do something like this along with everything else I'm all ears.

I would enjoy saying we have several fleeters and fleeters in training doing exercises in Rendili space. They can be practicing as a cover for providing security for the shipyards constructing the flagship. I still think everything else is necessary though to involve as many people in ways they can participate as possible, as well as enabling the thread to get more posts.

[member="Camellia Swift"] - I never said anything about making the thread smaller. I said that adding additional small plot strands would help, especially when it comes to reaching a 400-post plot goal in the quietest season of roleplaying. Like I said - a single-strand plot like the one you are proposing, where we sit on a single linear path the entire time chasing one single goal, tends to fizzle. It happens. It's not new, it's also not the end of the world or a bad thing.

Here, direct context in three ways:

One, developing and building ships isn't just zug zug build build hammer on metal. There's testing. There's also training crew, field testing, integrating new technology into an existing order of battle. How would the Republic use this ship? What's its purpose, how would it be deployed in battles? This would perfectly display and answer all those questions.

Two, like I said, there's lots of discussions about fleeting lately. A lot of people are very sheepish about it, and there's a lot of good reasons why this is a thing. This is a great way for us to help people learn how to fleet, the basics of it, and perhaps let us as a faction lead the charge in allaying some of the fears involved.

Three, there's inevitably going to be space battle against the One Sith in short order. This is good practise for us as writers.

Add on top of this? More plot strands means more ways for people to get involved (and thus contribute more posts, making the 400-post goal easier to achieve), it gives people more ways to own the plot personally and be more invested in making said contribution.

I am very much open to the idea of bringing people in for fleeting exercises and preparing them for future battles with the OS and the use of the flagship, though I believe the Flagship will be restricted to Caid Centurion or anyone else the FL decides can use it.

I think if you Pm the people and get them together it'll be fine and dandy and we can go ahead and bring this idea into the thread. Unless I'm missing some point still in which case maybe you can hit me on skype as this whole issue of exchanging mass text doesn't seem to be making much sense since I don't see where the thread conflicts with your idea of adding fleeting training to it?

As for testing, I readily admitted to making a mistake already on that

I developed a ship already in another thread detailing its specifics. I fully intend to go over this ship's abilities in the ongoing new thread as well.

I do believe though you are really off to say I made this a single strand idea. Its been very open with several routes, the corporate discussion, the pursuit of a slicer, and now this fleeting idea you mentioned as well. I already had 2 in so I don't see how it was single.

[member="Camellia Swift"] - you edited while I was writing, haha. that happens. most of your points you addressed just now came up right as I hit post.

dw about it, then - as long as it's not just 'x goes to the senate, while y chases these guys'. should be fine.

So then so I make myself clear.

So far the thread will hopefully include:
1) Jedi and ground pounders and some others chasing a slicer who MAY have stolen the data on the logistics of the Flagship

2) The senate if they appear and the Corporate Alliance helping to keep updates on construction as well as rehash the abilities of the ship in question and its specifications

3) An ongoing fleeting exercise that doubles as security for the construction, and gives us an opportunity to train new interested fleeters and pilots

This sound about right?

And still open to more ideas people want to bring in.

Its less that I am making single objectives and more just trying to include as many as I can. The Corporate Alliance would be involved in helping fund and supply the components, the Senate would be the one providing the contract and want to be aware of progress. Ground folk and Jedi would do best with clear target they can pursue how they wish. And now fleeters and pilot jockies can zip about having fun while also being on hand in case anyone comes around.

So now let's try and spur people into this! I'll add the thread here later since its 6 AM and I should sleep a little. . . .

operational question - why would the Corporate Alliance, an external power, be involved in funding the galaxy's most powerful government's lead warship? surely we could fund it ourselves, we only own... what, about 1/5 of the entire Galaxy?

[member="Zane Watts"]

Because Rendili Stardrive is one of its members, a founding member of the original in canon, and by getting their aid to increase the budget it takes the edge off the Republic and I owe them some help in return for theirs which gets us more posters and them some help on their own dev threads. That or they can do threads to purchase special Rendili tech like Whisperthrust Stealth Engines or etc.

Plus some of the other companies sell to the Republic too so its good for them to help out as well.

That would be like the US asking other countries like China and Russia to fund their carriers... never going to happen. Plus, that would be a huge conflict of interest. Don't get me wrong, the premise of getting more posters is valid and I'm not questioning that at all. But, a little digging, and there's Sith companies in the Corporate Alliance - and we'd be all but saying 'hey our enemies just helped fund our major warship'. Especially when this is a supposedly 'neutral' power - and you're giving them something to hold over us.

PR nightmare right there.

Just a reminder, too -- forgive me if I've missed existing discussion on it; I've read most of this thread, but I've been grading exams for four days and I'm wiped out -- might want to start considering how you'll be handling your thread design in relation to this rule on flagship construction:

c. The thread is public and is open to any other Major Faction to join.
