Kahne's choice had surprised her somewhat: a slightly-curved blade designed no doubt to be wielded in one hand, though long enough for two, if the right hilt was joined to it. Examining it critically from afar, Teynara was quite certain it was but a single-edged blade, the kind that proved excellent for cutting and slashing, but utterly inadequate for piercing: the sort of weapon one that would be favoured by someone who moved a good deal in combat, and could focus their strikes at the right moment.
Only a skilled swordsman would favour that. It'd be disadvantageous to an amateur.
Teynara's own experience of combat was largely academic: sessions on the practice floor, and hours spent in the training dojo located near her University campus, engaged in the practice of Tae-Jitsu. She'd never actually
fought someone with the express intention of hurting them, so any swordsmanship she'd worked through had been with a willing partner, pushing each other to try and advance their skills and outwit the other.
Chess with a bladed weapon, she thought reflectively. The sort of battle the Jedi faced was unknown to her.
Certainly no wooden training sword would match up to what they face.
Grey-blue eyes carefully perusing the different weapons available, she had to wonder how it would feel to take one and use it to the purpose of harming another - even though she was certain that such would only be necessary in her own defense.
Can I hurt someone else and be okay with it? she asked herself inwardly.
Can I do that without hesitating, knowing that it's them or me? She honestly wasn't sure - and that bothered Teynara more than she'd care to admit.
Walking along the tables lined with blades and similar other weapon components, the young woman made a point to make contact with several, admiring the craftsmanship involved. Several of them had potential: she could pick a more curved blade, similar to Kahne's preference, while others had broader blades that were edged on both sides. One caught her eye: a long, slender blade that was double-edge, but slight in a way many of the others were. Picking it up with both hands, she moved to bend it a little, feeling a little give in the blade, but plenty of resistance there.
Good thing, too: a blade that won't bend a little will break easily. Couldn't have something too brittle.
The blade was about as long as her arm from shoulder to the tips of her fingers, but far thinner, the sort of weapon that would be used by someone who wanted to move quickly, but without too much force.
The sword you'd craft from this couldn't compete for strength. One sharp blow from a heavier weapon and it would shatter.
But if the force all comes from the wrist, it'd move quicker than the heavier blades. That was always a worthwhile consideration.
"I'll try this one, I think," she remarked, handing it over to Kahne so he might examine it. It was a little different to the one he had chosen, certainly lighter, but a weapon that could cut and pierce, which offered her a little versatility that his might lack.
"You're the weapons expert," Teynara added, watching her Master more than the blade.
"I'll trust your analysis."
Veiere had already started assembling the others as they made their choices, the students now gathering and sitting facing him, with the components for their weapons resting in front of them, ready for whatever ritual or practice they were now expected to engage in.
Should be interesting, she reflected. Kahne would undoubtedly guide her in this, as much as Master Arenais intended to.
Part of his job, isn't it?
