We are writers and any story no matter how another writer thinks has gone lame, can be revived and turned around. We are masters... creators of any said universe. A writer can take any story anywhere.
If need be, and only if you yourself are tired of it, we can at least see about closing it...depart our character's ways. Give it some thought?
