Handwavey Credits and the Fall of the Republic

When a person can just declare, "I purchase X good with Y credits", the creative content embodied in X is stolen, abstractly, by the hyper-fiat currency of because-I-said-it's.

Much like the disgusting bureaucratic bloat, crony capitalism, and pork barrel spending of the Republic created the incentive for the confederacy to rebel, leading to the Empire, where creativity was quashed, the continual hand-waving of credits will lead to a similar censure of content-creators.

If we have to justify access to materials and schematics, why not credits? You want to buy a ship? Prove to me you can afford it.

See thats how it already is. It is up to the person selling things to make sure the one buying them has what they say they have. Check bios and if there is not a record of what they own and what threads they have gained income in then just deny the sell. It is the honor system and part of that is that people selling/auctioning things need to be checking up on the ones buying things. There is also the whole aspect of what their character is that plays a role. Someone who is of nobility/royalty/wealthy family can get away with more than someone who is a smuggler/farmer/begger ICly can. Another thing is that items are and should be more valuable than credits, which both parties should be aware of going into things.

Counterpoint:

I've built five Tier 5+ companies and run a lot of Marketplace threads. I don't specify prices, mainly because the value of a credit is so inconsistent in canon and on Chaos. I'd contest that making and selling products yields no rewards. On the contrary, I get the satisfaction of making good things and seeing people use them happily. Far from what you're saying, the most creative stuff tends to float to the top. It gets rewarded when it becomes popular. And the popularity of one's creations incentivizes greater creativity. Anyone who runs a successful Marketplace thread will tell you the same thing.

Even under the empire, they built a Death Star. I'm not saying it's not done. Just that commerce doesn't incentivize it when credits are meaningless. You seem to be saying that it's prestige that incentivizes it. So, then, the ultimate currency is prestige.

ICly they were only able to build the Death Star was because they had control of the Banking Clan. They also were notorious for cutting costs on equipment for their troops and officials. Why Stormtrooper armor was so terrible as well as their training. The Clone Wars almost bankrupted both sides and there was some economic depression beginning at the end.

I must respectfully disagree with this statement. I believe that this should explain why the Stormtroopers seen in the movies tended to miss so frequently.
