After the successful operation of Helix's Photonic Army project, solid-state hologram technology seemed a new frontier of potential military applications. Thus the HB2 was born. Essentially a large, smooth glassy bulb in appearance, its unassuming exterior belies the dangerous and flexible technology that lurks within. When activated, the HB2 can project a solid, tangible hologram, able to perform a number of defensive tasks.
Firstly, the bulb can project a solid barricade of photons, performing much the same function as standard energy shielding. In this state, it can turn aside both energy and projectile fire (at least as long as its power lasts.)
Secondly, the bulb is capable of creating photo-realistic and solid facsimiles of its parent vessel, and projecting these in a dizzying haze nearby in the void. As such, the vessel's apparent position and actual position are never quite the same, making it more difficult for enemy ships to target it accurately. These copies are sufficiently solid to fool many targeting computers, to say nothing of the naked eye. An enemy ship can typically get an approximate area, and the vessel is still visible, but striking a solid blow can be difficult.
However, the solid protection afford by the HB2 is somewhat mediocre, and should an enemy vessel successfully strike the ship it is attached to, it will only turn away a modest amount of firepower compared to conventional deflector or particle shielding. Likewise, the bulb's ability to obscure the ship's position is a diversionary tactic, not cloaking, and can fail to protect the vessel from quicker-witted enemy captains. As such, while vessels bearing these systems can be frustratingly difficult to pin down, the smoke and mirrors approach conceals a fairly squishy center...

SPECIAL FEATURES
- Both obscures and protects its parent vessel.
STRENGTHS
- Flexible: The HB2 is the latest display of Helix's mastery of solid-state hologram tech, able to deflect projectile or energy weapons with equal ease.
- Cloak and Dagger: Fitting with the deception-based warfare style of the Tsis'kaar, the HB2 can obscure (though not truly conceal) the position of ships fitted with it, making the vessel more difficult to hit.
- Mediocre Defense: While it can turn away almost any variety of weapon, the solid protection provided by holoshields is in general inferior to that of conventional deflectors.
