DESCRIPTION
The Helix Syndicate is the most pervasive and powerful criminal element present in the Pentastar Alignment. It is no longer a question of if planets in the Alignment feel the influence of the Syndicate upon it, but rather to what degree. At this stage in its growth, the Syndicate concerns itself with a multitude of operations.
While not all of its operations are illegal, the methodology with which the Syndicate spreads its influence certainly is. Spying, blackmail, and extortion are the staple trades of the Syndicate. It uses its robust network of informants, listening posts, spy satellites, and corrupt officials to, essentially, rig favorable outcomes no matter what goals it decides to pursue. While there are certainly instances where the Syndicate does regular business with governments, these deals have almost always been as a result of the harassment or bribery of politicians.
The Syndicate got its start as a debt buying corporation - purchasing the debts people or companies owed to other people and then collecting on them with impunity. The Helix Syndicate quickly gained an unscrupulous reputation for its practices in this trade. Although those who made their payments in a timely manner were left alone and eventually forgiven, those who didn’t suffered vicious beatings and near-endless harassment.
When the Syndicate couldn’t get money out of its debtors, they began to forcibly remove them from wherever they were and put them to work in various mines. This is of dubious legality - instances of kidnapping have so far been unproven. The official story is that the miners go “willingly” in order to work off their debts. Those who do go are treated to tolerable conditions but grueling work. Despite the other heinous aspects of the practice, those who do work off their debts get released.
The income provided by the mining operations allowed the Syndicate to invest more into its intelligence network. Deep space listening posts and spy satellites were designed, informants planted inside of important government institutions. It was at that point the casinos and fighting pits started opening up. These were a remedy for those brief periods when there weren’t a lot of debts to be bought. Now those who find themselves owing considerable gambling debts to the Syndicate find their way to the debtor mines as well.
But this was nothing compared to the revenue that would come in from its privatized prisons. Massive mountain complexes built into fortress worlds to house the Pentastar Alignment’s worst offenders for no small price. Although some residents aren’t even criminals. Just people a few of the wealthier private citizens would like “out of the way” for a while.
To supplement its growing power base, the Syndicate established a string of forts on various worlds. Strongholds, essentially, where it could marshal its forces as necessary to project its influence throughout the Pentastar Alignment. Each fort serves a different purpose, but all are well defended installations capable of withstanding siege.
RATIONALE
Once, long ago, a dissatisfied Givin named Pollux led a coup against the leadership of a sect of the Guavian Death Gang. After the coup, Pollux took his followers to the great galactic North - away from Hutt Space and into the Pentastar Alignment. It was here that the Helix Syndicate was officially founded.
Pollux founded the Syndicate alongside a man named Eugene, another former member of the Guavian Death Gang. For unknown reasons, Pollux left, and a man named Maleagant assumed his place. Eugene remained an overseer and was soon joined by two more: a Mandallian Giant named Rahgot and a former Morgukai Warrior by the name of Deglarch.
Maleagant led the Syndicate from its infancy until it became the juggernaut of the Alignment. At which point, he too departed to further his career among the Sith. The company was left in the charge of Tytos Ardik, who removed the current overseers from power and brought in his own: an Arconan by the name of Felix, a Chiss woman named Cumi'obaiwe'doresh, and a mysterious Weequay by the name of Ji Shun.

- The Helix Syndicate has established a highly profitable, highly efficient spice smuggling circuit. Spice is grown in the Outer Rim by the Zareca Cartel, then smuggled into the Core by Blackwell Agriworks. Thanks to its impressive intelligence networks and capacity for espionage, the Helix Syndicate was able to negotiate contracts that allow Blackwell Agriworks freighters to land on various Core Worlds without thorough cargo inspections. The end result are profits most small-time spice pushers can only dream of. More details available on request.
