As Bryce mentioned, it may be a good idea to start thinking of what kind of character you want to write. You can always ask. There lots of information on Wookiepedia that is free to use (As well as in our own Codex if you're feeling adventurous).

The galaxy is in a state of chaos and seemingly constant war.
It is over 800 (almost 900) years since the Battle of Yavin (A New Hope). Since then, the galaxy has gone through a galaxy-wide plague and a dark age where most ancient knowledge was lost. Much has since been recovered, but not everything. Factions have risen and fallen, allied with the Light, the Dark, or themselves. Every few years, a cataclysmic event happens: People are pulled into the Netherworld en masse; machines rise up against us and are put down; Superweapons must be destroyed; etc.
Due to these events, certain worlds have been pulled back into existence (See Alderaan), while the wars have taken their toll (Cataclysmic event on Corellia, broke it in two).
Currently, the galaxy is fighting the light and the dark on several fronts: Galactic Alliance (Jedi) fighting the First Order (Ren), Order of the Silver Jedi Order fighting The Sith Empire. A mass of smaller factions have popped up in the core, fighting for control. While the Mandalorians are having a civil war after someone blasted parts of Mandalore to bits.
