Depends on the name and how you do it. If you click the @Mention link under their avatar, it should work 99% of the time. If you type it out yourself, it'll probably work 75% of the time - mainly because some people fat fingered their names when signing up or creating their character and have extra characters.

I've seen spaces placed at the end of the account name on accident, which can really fudge things up.
