I spent a little time reading some of the threads here before signing up. Is it necessary to join all the big combat threads, or can characters progress, improve, fall in love and blow things up on their own? Are factions a requirement? Does it matter if I'm less interested in what faction is largest on the map?

It's not necessary to join any combat threads, you can progress, improve, fall in love and blow things up on your shiny own, factions are not mandatory, and it doesn't matter, only the largest faction cares that it's the largest faction

[member="Scherezade deWinter"], I was thinking of creating a Force-sensitive swashbuckling Robin Hood type, with a smile on his lips and a sense of justice and derring-do. Someone who leaps out of an open window trusting that there'll be something to slow his descent on the way down, an eternal optimist who lives and loves largely and with all his heart.

Also, if you lick him when he's created he'll likely follow you anywhere.

I see you've made a character and joined the Jedi Academy Network. It's a great resource, although not the most active of places. In case you'd be interested, here is a great ad that gives you an overview over the various Jedi orders we've got here on Chaos, with links to their faction pages at the end. The Jedi Praxeum is pretty similar to the Jedi Academy Network, though more active. It's a good place to start if you're looking for some cross-faction roleplays as well. This is where I hang out though, so I'm biased.
