Redd Redd

Haastal winced as he ran a hand over the freshly scarred brand that was settling into his skin. It was still incredibly raw even though the outer skin seemed to heal over the wound. He cursed under his breath before stepping back and turning out of the refresher. It had been over a week since Haastal and Redd departed from Netra'Yaim. The celebration had come to an end and once again most of the Verd's were scattered to the winds. As Haastal was yet to receive orders to return to Naboo or Geonosis, the man had turned his eyes towards another task for the clan. This one being significantly more mundane than the others. There were rumors of a Beskar deposit in the Polis Massa cluster deep in the Outer Rim. If the rumors were true then perhaps the Clan could strike a deal with the OPA to begin a mining operation, but first they had to make sure the Beskar was real.

The Mandalorian stepped into the main living area of the ship. He was not wearing a shirt, yet he was dressed in a pair of black shorts. He pulled a small metal container from his pocket, opening it and pulling a cigarra from it. After pinching the cigarra into his lips, Haastal called out. "Redd?" He called, looking for his mate, he turned out of the living area and made his way to the cockpit. He lit his cigarra, taking a deep drag of the cylinder to even out the burn on the end of it.

He made his way into the cockpit and glanced over the console. After briefly checking the systems he was prepared to turn back into the main hold when he noticed a small blip on one of the panels. The Hyperdrive emergency sensor was flashing a deep shade of blue, which generally meant the Hyperdrive was in need of a simple tune up. The man gazed down at the blip before looking up at the scene before them. The stars passed them by at super speeds near-flawlessly. Hopefully there would no problems before they returned home.

He stepped back into the hall, making his way back to the living area. "Redd, you up?" He called out again.

REDD

Redd had been sound asleep, which was strange because she hadn’t been sleeping properly at all. In fact, someone could say that her sleep has been disruptive at best. For she had spent many nights worrying over her mate and his condition. Some nights, she would simply sit and watch over his sleeping form. While others she would rest, only to suddenly wake up the moment that the bed would shift due to Haastal’s movements. To say that she still felt some guilt over wounding the man, was an understatement, but ever since then she had made it her mission to change the bandages and make sure that the wounds were clean. She didn’t want anything to make the healing process any slower than it had to be.

Yet, for some reason or another, perhaps it was because they were flying again, Redd had managed to fall asleep, curled up tightly under the blankets. Blankets that felt similar to her thick red coat, for she was able to easily get cold in her human form due to the lack of said fur coat. When she had fallen asleep, the woman had no clue, but what she did know, was that it was the sound of her mate’s voice that woke her from her dreamless slumber. Her golden green eyes fluttered open, while a yawn parted her lips. Slowly, the woman stretched and rose to a sitting position, only to question as to whether she had indeed heard Haastal’s voice. Had she been dreaming that he had been calling out to her? No, it couldn’t have been a dream and while she yawned yet again, Redd listened to the sounds of the ship.

His footsteps were so familiar to her, that she could pick him out of the crowd based on that fact alone. Not to mention that she could find him anywhere even if she had a blind fold on, by following his scent. She could also smell the faint scent of a freshly lit cigarra and her lips curved into a soft smile as she listened to him move towards the cockpit. The woman rose from the bed and grabbed the first shirt that she saw, which so happened to be one of Haastal’s shirts and slipped it on. Her bare feet crossed the floor as she heard her mate’s footsteps move towards the living room, only to hear him call her name yet again.

”Haastal, I’m awake.” The red wolf said as she appeared by the door and rubbed a hand over her eyes as she rubbed the sleep out of them. ”I didn’t mean to fall asleep,” She said as she moved away from the door and crossed over to the man to lightly rest a hand upon his chest. ”When did you get up?” Redd asked as she rose up onto her toes so she could nip his bottom lip before she kissed the man deeply. Then, she peeled away from him and walked around to view the brand and the bite mark. Her pale hands lightly touched at the bite mark’s healing skin and she took note of the brand, but didn’t move to touch it. Not when she knew that it was still so tender for him.

After completing her inspection, she moved towards the kitchen to begin making the coffee. Something which she was beginning to gain a taste for. Strangely enough. Once she had put the machine on, the woman turned to smile at Haastal, ”Well, I can only imagine that we are getting close to our destination, but if we find any Beskar then who is going to-” Her words cut off suddenly as she felt the ship shudder and her hands shifted to grip at the bench. Redd's nerves jumped into her throat then as her eyes suddenly went wide as her anxiety about flying was pushed to the surface. ”Please tell me that that was nothing.”
Bcj802.png

The next time Haastal called out for Redd, he heard his mate respond. The chains of sleep seemed to be wrapped around her, causing him to chuckle a bit as he moved into the living area. When Redd fall into his chest it caused the man to give her a warm smile, his hand possessively holding the small of her back while the other cradled her butt. He let her nip at him as she always did, his lips curling up as he enjoyed the signs of affection she gave him. That was one thing he never had to ask for, affection. It was nice. He leaned down, pressing his lips to hers as she kissed him earnestly.

She didn't mean to fall asleep? "Yea, doin' stuff like hoppin' in the bed really sends mixed signals." He teased her, his hand coming up to hold her own throat in a loving hold. "Quit spendin' your nights starin' at me and get some sleep, baby." He scolded her, before pressing his lips to hers once again. However she was out of his grip in a matter of minutes. She prowled around to his back, causing him to immediately speak up. "They're fine, Redd." He promised her, yet he still enjoyed the light touches that came along his back. When she asked when he got up the man chuckled a bit. "Just a few minutes ago." He told her, before watching the woman bound off to make the morning coffee.

He followed the woman into the kitchen, however almost as soon as he entered he felt a horrid shudder flow through the ship. The sudden quake caused the Mandalorian to freeze in place, his eyes turning to the ceiling above him.

When Redd asked if that was nothing to worry about Haastal wished he could have said yes. He'd be lying.

His eyes fell to Redd with a concerned look before he suddenly bolted out of the kitchen. He nearly tripped over the sofa, running so fast his coordination surely suffered. Barreling into the cockpit he looked over the panel's before yelling, his hand slamming into the terminal. "Fuck!" He yelled, before turning his eyes to the viewport before them. The rushing stars and planets were no longer a wall of light, in fact it seemed they were steadily dropping in and out of Hyperspace.

"Redd!" Haastal yelled, running out of the cockpit and to the ship's armory. "Redd, get your Beskar'gam on, now!" He yelled to the woman as he opened the locker to his own suit. When Redd entered, Haastal spoke hurriedly.

"Hyperdrive is failing and when it does we're gonna be ripped out of Hyperspace. The sensors are fried from an overload and we can't drop out ourselves or we may drop out into a Star's grav field. We need to armor up and get into the crash bunker before-"

suddenly there was a violent shift, causing Haastal to slam into the locker.

They were in real space again.

"Before that...."

FAILURE

Redd loved every second of the man’s touch, right down to the loving hold on her throat. In fact, she wanted nothing more than to spend their entire day to simply explore and caress. She thrived off of it, missed it even as her pack had once been a close knit pack that used the basic touch to ground each one of their members. Being caged had taught her that touch wasn’t desirable and she had been hesitant about it ever since. Until Haastal. Now, strangely enough, she craved touch, more specifically the warmth of her mate’s hands as they caressed and grabbed at every inch of her body. She secretly enjoyed every second that their skin touched each other, even in the smallest of glances and that, that was her drug.

The wolf also knew that he was also her weakness. A weakness that every fighter knew, that they had to defend. At all costs.

So, when the ship shuddered and the anxiety in her now golden eyes followed him out of the kitchen, her brain scrambled to think about what could possibly happen. Would her worst fears come to life? She heard his voice and then heard him call her name and she rushed to the amoury to do exactly that, to pull on her Beskar’gam. Her pale hands pulled open the door to her own locker and her scrambled brain tried not to think about what was going to happen to them. The possibilities were endless and Redd couldn’t help but wonder if they were going to die today.

She listened when Haastal began to speak and every so often she nodded her head as she pulled and clipped on her armour. Each movement that she made was precise and deliberate, for the wolf, although she was fearful of the outcome, knew that her movements had to be separated from the fears of her mind. Fears got people killed and she nodded her head to her mate’s words once again as she reached out to grab the buy’ce, but the ship shuddered again and a violent shift threw Redd back into the opposite wall. Fear spiked up high within her as she pressed a hand to her head that had slammed back into the wall with the shift and she softly growled. ”Haastal… If we survive this, I’m going to need more than a few drinks to help me get to sleep.”

Slowly, she peeled herself off of the wall and crossed back over to her locker to grab her buy’ce, ”This is exactly why I hate flying. Technology fails, but good solid land won’t threaten to have me spiraling out into space. Four paws and some good solid land is always my preference. Not this flying business where we could die at any moment due to technology failure.” Redd growled as she rubbed at the back of her head once again. While she would probably only get a bump and maybe some bruising, it could easily be solved by shifting into wolf form for a few hours or so. The technology problem with the ship, now that was something that she couldn’t solve. Most technology was beyond her and while her mate had been helping her to get a grasp on it, she still wanted to stab it.

Viciously.

The wolf turned to her mate then to make sure that he wasn’t at all injured, but she was grateful that he appeared alright. ”Do we still move to the bunker? Or are we relatively safe to assume that we are not going to die in a crash?” Redd asked as her golden eyes shifted over his body. What were they doing to do?
Bcj802.png

It wasn't like Haastal blamed Redd for being offset, the thought of crashing into a planet and having your bones ground to dust or melted to paste wasn't exactly his idea of a happy holiday trip either. Still, he couldn't find the words to tell the woman as he was pulling on his armor. After he pulled his buy'ce on the man spoke into the mic vividly. "Command: Slave connection, the Inferno." His helmet chimed in response to the command, causing his HUD to present a real-time view of the sight out of the viewport. The ship had come out of space directly in the upper atmosphere of some black and crimson world. "All rear-boosters fire, slow the fuck down!" He yelled into the command prompt.

Haastal's HUD went completely transparent while he looked over to Redd, stepping closer to her. "Get to the bunker." He said, gesturing across the hall. He took the woman's buy'ce from her before sliding it over her crimson hair. "Get yourself set in a crash seat and brace, now!" He ordered her. His hand came up, grabbing the side of her helmet forcefully. "Do not get out once you are secure! Not until it's over." Haastal stepped back from the woman before making his way out of the armory.

He did not make way for the bunker, instead he ran into the cockpit. When he settled into the pilot's seat the man began to strap himself in. "Ok, you big queen. Come on!" Haastal took hold of the flight control's, jerking back on them as he felt the ship rock violently in response to the sudden shift. The belly of the ship was blasting through the atmosphere and Haastal was straining, working to get the nose of the freighter down. "Too...heavy....in....the...ass!" His eyes went wide as he noticed the flames of the atmosphere on the viewport were steadily being replace by a view of black, smoky clouds. "Haar'chak!" He yelled.

Suddenly there was a loud, piercing sound that flowed through the ship. The sound of metal ripping from it's host. When Haastal looked down he could see on the screen that both of the ship's rear engines had been torn from their place. Although the damage made the ship dead in the skies, it did lighten the rear end, causing the nose of the ship to come down just enough so they would not be smashed upon impact. "Come on....come on..." Haastal breathed, his eyes scanning the landscape before him. There was molten rock and lava everywhere, however there were strips of charred terrain here and there, none big enough to land their ship on however.

As the terrain grew closer and closer, Haastal took notice of a raised plateau not far from where they were descending. He cursed, flipping a number of the switches above him as he aimed for the raised terrain. "Better hope we got enough room!" He yelled.

What came next was fast, blindingly so.

The viewport shattered, Haastal's helmet jutted forward as rock and dirt filled the cockpit. The sound was deafening until suddenly it was eerily quiet. The Mandalorian's body was shocked and worn from the impact, yet even then he couldn't help but mutter. "Please tell me I'm dead..." He coughed, before looking up to see they had slammed into the plateau, yet landed early enough so they did not slide into the magma surrounding it.

CRASH

Her golden eyes looked to Haastal as he entered voice commands into his HUD and she watched with quiet reserve. If she had been a wolf, her ears would have perked forwards when he yelled, instead she angled her head slightly to the right and a frown creased her forehead. Whatever it was, she could sense the urgency about her mate as he stepped closer. He spoke, but a protest was quick to her lips. However, he took her buy’ce from her and slid it over her head to lock it in place. Haastal ordered her into the bunker and told her to stay there until it was over. With every word that he spoke, a knot of fear tightened in her stomach and she wanted to say something to him, to kiss him, but he was already moving away towards the cockpit.

Redd couldn’t move for a second as she stood frozen, but then she sprung into action and she quickly moved to the crash bunker. The red wolf threw herself into a seat and fingers moved to strap herself in, all the while she feared for her mate who didn’t follow. Who was still out there as the ship shuddered and rocked violently, but she had to have faith. She had to believe that her mate was safe and that he knew exactly what he was doing. That he wasn’t about to die in a fiery blaze and she had to hold on to that hope even though she felt a nagging thought which began to feed her every fear that she had about flying. Which also bled over into concern for Haastal, but she had to trust him. Trust that he would be safe.

The wolf heard the straining of the ship, listened to Haastal’s voice even from where she was as he spoke to the ship they were flying in. Smelled the smoke and heard the sounds of wrenching metal that seemed to scream against her ear drums as it was ripped away. Redd lifted her hands to cover her ears and she squeezed her eyes shut as she wrestled with her own fight or flight instincts. Instincts that told her that sitting still was not the answer, that she should be running or trying to move away from the sense of danger within the metal death trap. Instead, she held on to her mate’s words, words that told her to not move until it was over.

It was the impact that had the wolf’s body slamming against the restraints which held her into her seat. She heard the metal that was being scraped over rock and dirt and even though she coughed, she worried not about herself. Redd gasped in air to recover the air that had been forced out of her lungs and she listened. Listened for Haastal’s voice, his heartbeat and while the rubble moved against the outer shell of the ship, only to finally settle, she heard his heartbeat followed closely by his voice.

Fingers fumbled at her restraints and finally she managed to get them undone, only to stumble out of the crash bunker and down the hallway. ”Haastal!” Redd called out as she navigated her way down into the cockpit that smelled much like dirt and something else that wasn’t native to a forested planet. ”Haastal!” She cried as she moved a rock and clambered over to her mate and wrapped her arms around him. ”You’re alive.” The wolf said as she took in his appearance for a moment to make sure that he hadn’t sustained any life threatening injuries during the crash. Finally, once she was sure that he was fine, she punched his shoulder. ”If you die, I’m going to go to the Knight's Obsidian and request that we bring you back from the dead, just so then I can strangle you to death myself.” Redd growled at him while both of her hands moved to grasp at the helmet that covered his head. The woman wanted nothing more than to kiss him, but his buy'ce and her own buy'ce were in the way.

After she finally calmed down, her golden eyes moved away from him, only to look out at their surroundings. ”Where the hell are we?” She finally asked as her left hand fell to rest upon his right shoulder.
Bcj802.png

He'd nearly passed out from the sudden shock of the crash. His body hurt, especially his arms. The sudden rock of the ship slamming into the planet made his body feel as if he'd been exercising all day. Even with his seat's restraints he felt as if he'd been tossed around like a rag doll. He could hear Redd's voice and though he tried to call back to her he was just too out of it for the moment. His voice came out as more of a sigh of exhaustion than any true words. When the Redd headed woman wrapped her arms around him, the Mandalorian weakly put an arm over his mat'es back, his fingers rubbing against the armor affectionately. "Hey baby." He breathed. "Course I'm alive...that wasn't shit." He lied. He'd been terrified every moment of it and was just glad he was alive to tell jokes.

Haastal groaned aduibly from the woman punching his shoulder. "Don't do that." He grumbled before unlatching the straps to his seat. He exhaled, pushing himself up before looking through the shattered viewport. When Redd asked where they were, Haastal couldn't help but exhale. "Mustafar." He muttered.

He leaned against the damaged console to rest. While he took a breather his hand tapped his buy'ce again and again. "Comms are down." He said before his eyes shifted over the landscape before them. The heat was already beginning to bleed through his suit. "Voice Command: Regulate." He breathed. His suit's cooling unit activated. While it didn't necessarily make it feel like a day at the beach it did take some of the edge off from the sweltering temperatures. He tapped the side of his buy'ce again, trying to bring the communication device back online. Nothing. Communications were completely down. Haastal tapped the console before him, flipping every switch and tapping every button. "No power too, damn." He said, before looking to Redd. "I have no clue what part of the planet we're even on."

"
Come on." He said, climbing onto the console so he could lean out of the damaged viewport. Moving out of the crashed ship, Haastal stood onto the nose of his freight, or whatever was left of it. His eyes glanced down to the half-buried, half-destroyed nose of the ship. When he looked up his eyes caught sight of a charred landscape with pools and rivers of lava. He gazed out at the seamless view that seemed to have no break, no escape, before muttering out. "You've gotta be kiddin' me." His eyes took in the hopeless landscape while his HUD worked to identify the terrain and all that was set within it. "Nothin'...no life readings at all."

TRACKING

Redd hadn’t felt the heat, not really, but then again she had been wrought with worry and anxiety. Now though, she was feeling it bleed into her own suit and she drew in a heavy breath before listening to Haastal and she repeated the same command. ”Voice Command: Regulate.” A sigh of relief parted her lips as she felt the temperature cool and that it wasn’t just her burning up due to the adrenaline pumping through her veins. With every news that her mate kept rattling off, their situation seemed more and more dire. She listened for anything, yet all she could hear was the molten sound of lava and the shifting of the occasional rock that fell from the top of the ship. The woman also didn’t smell any scents that would indicate life. At least not in the direct vicinity…

A frown creased her forehead as she listened to Haastal but as she pulled herself up over the console and out the damaged viewport, she lifted her nose to scent the air. She could have sworn that she had smelled something. The scent of the lava was slightly distracting, along with the scent of ash and soot. ”Forget the ship. It’s dead.” Redd said as she turned to view the wreckage. Golden eyes noted the fact that there seemed to be extensive damage to the rear where she had heard something being ripped off during their crash landing, not to mention the fact that the nose took a hit and there was stones and dirt now filling the cockpit. It was a miracle that Haastal had even managed to survive. ”If you cannot fly it, I don’t know if you’re going to be able to move it from here. How would you even get parts here to fix it? Seems like it would be logical to leave it and get a new one.”

She lifted her head then, as she sniffed the air and scrunched up her nose. ”I smell something, but I need to shift.” Redd turned to lightly place a hand upon Haastal’s shoulder and she rose up upon her toes so then she could place her helmet against his for a moment. Then she pulled away and placed space between them so she could shift. Finally, when she stood on four paws, she shook and felt the armour plating that had shifted along with her grip at her coat. Right, she had almost forgotten that her armour could shift with her. The red wolf sunk her chest down low as she stretched out her front paws, only to shift her weight forwards and stretch out one back leg at a time. Once she was done stretching, she shook again and she turned as she scented the dry air once again.

Her nose dipped, while her mind pressed on Haastal’s to communicate her thoughts. ’Something was here, maybe a little over a day ago.’ Golden eyes looked at the dirt that was fairly warm under her paws, but it was hard to tell if there had been any footprints due to the disturbance of the crash. So she moved forwards to follow the scent until her golden eyes spotted the half buried print in the ash and dirt. It was that of a boot and she lifted her nose to scent the air once again. ’I don’t recognize this scent.’ Redd admitted as she padded forwards and continued to follow the path of the scent.

’It’s not…’ She paused as she lost the scent due to the magma. Quietly, she padded back and forth to pick up the scent, only to find it once again. ’It’s not human. In fact, it’s not even a species that I know-’ Her words came to a stop as there were suddenly more than one scent. Faint as it were, but it was the sight before her that had her words dragging off. Bones, many of them scattered and floating in the molten lava stream before her.
Bcj802.png

When Redd spoke about moving the ship, Haastal shook his head at the woman. "Nah, the queen is dead. I was just hopin' we could use the long-range comm device, but the terminal was smashed and the power supply is toast too." He said.

When Redd mentioned shifting, the Mandalorian glanced back at her. He felt her place her buy'ce against his and he nodded back at her. He watched as the woman and her armor shifted, their shape and stance aggressively changing as she turned into her Lupine form.

Redd's voice filled Haastal's mind and he stepped behind her, lowering himself into a crouch while placing a hand on the back of her spine. He followed behind Redd closely as she allowed herself to trace the strange scent. When his mate led them to a sea of charcoal black land, Haastal gazed over it with a hesitant expression hidden behind his helmet. This was a part of Mustafar that the Mandalorian was familiar with. A hellish part of the planet even when compared to the desolate fire filled wastes that were prevalent in the world.

"Fuck." It was all Haastal could think to say.

"The
Sea of Ash is over two hundred thousand miles. It is the most treacherous terrain on Mustafar and has been known to leave the most well-prepared men dead." He repeated words that he had only heard spoken to him in old Smuggler's tales. "I tracked a bounty to Mustafar once before...but I was nowhere near here." He told her.

The Mandalorian glanced back to their crashed ship before turning his eyes to Redd. "
The ship's hull has been compromised so it won't be worth shit against this heat." He looked to his wrist, pulling up a screen showing that his armor was fully charged. "Redd, turn off your HUD. We need to conserve power." He said, before tapping a small button on the side of his buy'ce, deactivating his helmet's functions, aside from the free-breather. Haastal looked over the terrain. His eyes took to the sun that was in the distance, shrouded by a thick fog of black clouds. "We follow the tracks then." He said, gesturing back to the imprint in the soot covered ground. "Can you track them through this?" Haastal asked.

TRACKING

Golden eyes hadn’t seen anything like this before, on this scale. Bones amongst lava, while ash played upon her sense of smell, creating a dampener of some kind. In fact it played upon the memory of when she was a pup trying to navigate the smoke while it clogged up her throat and burned her eyes. The bones still had her captivated though and she quietly nodded her head as she listened to her mate speak. She wanted nothing more than to place a paw over her nose, but that would only serve to further irritate her sense of smell. So, she refrained from doing so. That was until Haastal mentioned the HUD’s power.

Crap! Of course the technology was going to make extra work for her. However, if she turned off her HUD before she shifted, perhaps that would save her an extra three minutes spent shifting, doing something else. It was going to have to be a habit that she was going to have to get in the habit of doing. Quietly, she shifted as she allowed the shift to change her body. The woman also felt the segmented plates dismantle and redistribute to allow for the change. Which still felt pretty weird to her, but she loved it because it gave her an advantage that she never had before and one that she was going to milk every second of if need be.

Redd finally stood on two feet and her gloved hand lifted to tap the small button on the side of her own buy’ce. ”I’ll get a handle on this one of these days,” She said with a soft chuckle before she nodded her head and drew in a breath for a moment in quiet thought. ”I believe I can track even through this. There are scents all throughout here, some stronger than others and some are only about a day old. However,” She paused as she bit down upon her bottom lip and chewed upon it for a moment in quiet contemplation. ”I may lose the scent from time to time. So I’ll be tracking with visual cues as well. The ash is going to be somewhat of a problem and dampen the scent. Probably will cause some inhalation problems, but shouldn’t be something that my lupine healing can’t fix once we are out.” The wolf said in an off tone.

Finally she nodded and stepped away from Haastal to shift once again. Upon completion of the shift, she scrunched up her nose, before her red paws began to move in the direction that she smelled the random scents. From time to time, she paused as she lowered her nose to view the barely visible print in the ash upon the ground. The fog didn't make things easier as she relied upon scent to navigate around lava and other potentially deadly pitfalls. Yet she still couldn’t help but wonder about where exactly they were going. ’I’m curious to know, how we are getting off of this damn wretched place?’ Redd asked as she wrinkled her nose for the fifth time.

Was her sense of smell starting to become as damp as the black fog and ash that surrounded them? The lupine paused for a moment to shake her form to shake off the ash that had come to rest upon her back and head. She shook her head to dislodge the ash upon her nose and she moved to sit back for a moment, only to draw in a slow labored breath. Her gaze moved downwards for a moment and spied more than one set of footprints and it confirmed that she wasn’t going crazy. That the first person, that she had scented out, had been joined by someone else and then joined by another person. Slowly, she closed her eyes and shook her head, only to look at her red paws which now seemed to have taken on the colour black instead. Blackened from the soot on the ground

Redd wanted nothing more than to rest. It was probably just because of the ash and soot, so she moved to press on. ’The first scent is slowly being joined by more footprints and some of these scents seem fresh. I think. I’m only estimating here, because I’m pretty sure that I cannot tell up from down anymore, but the freshest scent is about twelve hours old.’ The wolf said tiredly through a telepathy connection to her mate as each step taken, was also beginning to wear upon the wolf. Especially considering she also wasn’t used to wearing her armour for long periods of time, while also drawing in a more labored breath due to the ash and soot in the air. If she could smell after this. She would be amazed.
Bcj802.png

The Mandalorian watched as his mate shifted back into her human form. He had pulled a blaster pistol from his holster, examining the weapon until he heard Redd's familiar voice. When she said she can track through the soot and smog of the volcanic world Haastal felt a bit relieved, but not much. It was not long before she shifted back into her wolven form and the man followed closely behind her. He wanted a smoke, but there wasn't any part of him that wanted to inhale the air that the planet supplies. It was breathable but far from ideal.

When Redd asked how they were going to escape this planet, Haastal was hesitant to answer. He didn't know. Mustafar was home to a few mining colonies with minimal technology and very few guests. He couldn't be certain of anything here, in fact he was only certain of one thing. "We follow these tracks and then make our next move. Let's just hope whoever left these tracks know the planet better than I do." He told his mate.

Haastal glanced down at Redd as she padded along on the ground. His eyes caught sight of the soot that was sticking to her fur and he walked alongside her, every so often he'd run his hands through her fur to pull some of the black ash off. "Voice Command: Bio-scanner, passive." He spoke into his helmet. The HUD on his screen came alive, scanning over Redd's bio-form and placing a detailed composition of her bio-readings. The readings soon disappeared, yet they'd return in the event her readings drastically changed.

They continued walking for some hours before Haastal could feel the heat weighing on him. Sweat bled down his brow on the inside of his helmet, causing his steps to slow to a halt.

He was sweating.

Why was he sweating? He blinked twice, bringing his HUD back to life and taking a look at the readings that were being projected before him. "My armor's gettin' hotter...is the coolin' system failing?" He wondered, before his eyes bucked at the external temperature.

It was rising.

Haastal exhaled, before glancing down at the rocky ground and cursing softly. "It's gettin' hotter." He muttered. He looked to Redd, before gesturing to a nearby rock structure. "Come on, let's take a break for a bit." He said, before patting his mate on the side of her armored belly.

REST

She felt his hand run through her fur every so often and an ear flickered back towards him every time that he spoke. With every touch, she felt compelled to keep moving forwards, to push through the heavy air laden with soot and ash. Even though every instinct within her told her it was a bad idea. Lupines were made for rich, green areas filled with forests and grass. They could even occasionally do sand filled areas, but even a feral animal knew that ash and soot was no good. That it would only create problems. However, Redd wasn’t thinking about problems, only that there was a living species that might be friendly, or it might not. Either way, hopefully they had a communications line or at the very least, a very basic ship that could get them the hell off of this planet.

If not, then they were in some serious trouble.

The wolf was so focused on her current task that she hadn’t paid attention to the fact that the earth underneath her paws had begun to heat up. She hadn’t noticed that she was soon beginning to feel the heat begin to seep into her coat and that sweat had begun to make her armour stick to her. Yet it was due to the fact that she was not feeling comfortable from the very beginning, that had made her miss all off the tell tale signs of the planet heating up. It was only when her Mate had pointed it out, that she paused to turn to face him. Redd angled her head as she focused upon the other elements. The heat under the pads of her paws that felt like she was walking on heated rocks that hadn’t been fully heated. The sweat that was beginning to make her armour feel as if it wasn’t just armour but a second layer of skin.

Golden eyes turned to view the footsteps that they had been following. They were beginning to gain ground on these. She could smell it. If they took a break they would potentially lose them and she feared that if they didn’t get there soon, then she wouldn’t be able to track them through their scent. The wolf watched the stranger’s footsteps as ash slowly fell to settle upon them, only to look back at Haastal when his hand patted her armored belly. Redd watched him for a moment and drew in his scent which was strongly mixed in with a thick layer of sweat and she nodded her head. ’We are getting closer, I can tell, but we should rest first. Gain our strength back.’

Redd said as she lowered her head to cough through her labored breathing. Quietly, she began to make her way over to the rock structure and now that she wasn’t focused upon the task at hand. She felt the tingling sensation along her throat, as the ash and soot had started to become quite the problem. The wolf didn’t want to give Haastal any sign that she was having any problems, so she laid down upon the rock, but waited for her Mate to sit and she rested her head upon his lap and closed her eyes for a moment. She paid attention to the sound of her breathing while she also felt the slight sting on the pads of her paws. While the ash and soot would have created problems earlier, it had been the natural healing of the lupine gene that had helped her get this far without too much issue. Redd knew though, it was going to go downhill from here.

So, she needed to get her Mate out of this desolate place as soon as possible. ’Haastal, we are getting close. I can feel it. We just can’t stay for long or we will lose them again. We need to kee-’ Redd paused as she avoided coughing again by holding her breath for a moment and she scrunched up her nose before continuing. ’We need to keep moving. I need to get you out of here safely.’

They made their way to the large rock and as soon as they made it there Haastal leaned his back against the hard surface. It was so damn hot on this world and as Haastal had noticed the temperature was only increasing. When Haastal leaned his back against the rock, he couldn't help but sigh out in relief. He felt Redd rest her head in his lap and he glanced down at her, smiling a bit through his helmet. He pulled at his gloved hand, disconnecting the gauntlet and setting it to the side. Then he reached down to his mate's pads and glanced down at them. They felt raw to the touch. This terrain was not forgiving to a Lupine.

The man exhaled, leaning over to pull a small metal case from his waist. Setting the case on the ground, he hushed Redd as she spoke into his mind. "Quiet." He told her. He pulled a small ointment and bandage from the case and immediately applied a thin coating to her pads. "Don't worry about me, Redd. Let's just focus about gettin' the hell outta here." He told her. After Redd's pads were appropriately bandaged, Haastal glanced up at the black skies above. Haastal grunted at the sight before patting his mate's armored neck and standing up from where he'd sat. "Ok, lets keep movin'." He told her.

Haastal allowed Redd to lead them back onto the path. They had to stay on the trail, as she had said, and now they no longer had the benefit of a break.

So they continued on.

The terrain only grew more and more difficult to overcome. With the harsh inclines of the cliffs and deep dips of the fissure, the march was beginning to weigh on the Mandalorian. At this point they had been marching on for nearly half a day. Haastal's sweat was spilling into his armor and coating his body, regardless of the thermal regulator within the armor. He exhaled, spewing a thick coating of sweat that had pooled over his mouth. As they marched forward, Haastal pulled his helmet off from his head. The helmet was nearly covered in the black soot. Haastal pulled a spare cloth from his belt, wiping out the inside of the helmet and then clearing the sweat from his face.

The raw air of the planet was horrid. It was nearly impossible to breathe and almost instantly Haastal fell into a coughing fit. The Mandalorian coughed again and again before finally dropping his buy'ce and hawking a thick slob of spit into the soot-encrusted dirt. "Fuck!" Haastal growled, before pulling the helmet back over his head. The regulator immediately turned back on along with the filtration system. Although the air flow was not perfect, it was so much better than the bare air cutting into his lungs.

He stood up, his eyes not able to meet Redd as they continued on. "We need to find the end of these fuckin' tracks." He told Redd, moving forward once again.

INHALATION

Haastal had quickly hushed her when she said that she needed to get him out. She did. She felt every instinct telling her that this was not a place that he could survive in. Yet, even as she thought more about him, his focus was on the pads of her paws. An ear twitched with slight pain as she felt his hand brush over them and she lifted her head to watch him as he began to attend to her paws with ointment and bandages. It soothed them, if only for a moment, but their rest was only quick and although she wanted to rest longer, the wolf knew that she had to keep going. To get them out of this dangerous environment somehow.

Redd pulled her paws back under her and an ear twitched as she felt the pain of standing back up onto her raw pads, but she didn’t have the time to think about it because she began to cough. The soot. The ash. It was slowly getting to her, but her one goal was to get her mate out alive. So, she continued on. The wolf returned back to where the footprints last were and found that the soot had partially covered them up, but was still usable. Even their scent was still clinging to the air on the path of whence they walked.

Her steps became slow. Her movements were a little more sluggish. She felt the heat through the bandages, but the bandages provided a small protective layer for her tender pads. Redd paused only for a moment as she lowered her head to cough, a cough which was slowly becoming more and more frequent. The steep incline didn’t help at all. Yet, it was at this point in time, when she was coughing that she heard Haastal cough himself and then she heard a hiss as the buy’ce was pulled from his head. ’No!’ She said; only she was too late as Haastal himself began to cough and she noted the slob of spit that he hacked up before quickly putting his helmet back on.

The wolf whined as she turned to face him, but he wouldn’t meet her gaze. ’I’m sorry, I should have told you that you shouldn’t remove your helmet.’ Redd said softly, but he kept pushing on. Her ears lowered, but she pushed herself forwards, ahead of him once again and continued on their path. Every now and then, she stumbled but pushed on. Every now and then, she coughed and wheezed. Yet she didn’t slow. Her one mission was to get Haastal out without him pulling his helmet off again. He needed air that he could breathe and preferably somewhere a lot cooler. Yet for some reason, the tracks continued to lead to somewhere hotter. Almost as if they were travelling to the source of the molten lava.

She knew that the scents were getting stronger and stronger, but she was beginning to get a little more frantic. Even with her own lupine healing, the air was still toxic, even to her. Redd could feel her strength being sapped, soon it’d fail her but she had to know that Haastal would be safe first. Had to know that even if she were to collapse, at least he would be ok. That was all that was important to her. For the wolf didn’t fear death, had long forgotten such a fear many years ago. She just feared the loss of another loved one. The loss which could potentially break her in so many ways. ’We are getting closer. It’s almost like-’ Her words cut off as they broke through the cloud and saw the factory just a little off into the distance.

’Almost like we are on top of them.’ Redd commented as she coughed some more and felt extremely light-headed. The wolf shook her head as she felt the sweat irritate her eyes and all she wanted to do was sleep. Slowly, she sat back as her head lowered along with her ears and she realised that she could sleep. She could just sleep for a very long time. Her body trembled as she coughed again, but this time she brought up mucus while she felt her chest tightening with each laboured breath. Golden eyes, looked at the substance before she heaved herself up and pushed forwards with slow steps. ’We have to get you out of here.’

"I already knew Redd." Haastal looked to his mate, a softer expression hiding behind the solemn, ghost-like T visor that he wore. His hand came down to pat Redd's armored spin before speaking evenly. "Stop that." He said, speaking to her as they walked on. Haastal looked down to Redd as he spoke. "You can't focus on me, you need to focus on keeping up your energy Redd." He said, before looking up to what laid before them.

It was something. Was it a ship? No. Was it salvation? Maybe not. It didn't matter. It was something more than gruesome black char over a hellish landscape. Haastal grabbed at Redd, wrapping his arms around her as he pulled her into a close hug. "Don't move..." He breathed out before blinking twice. His suit was hemorrhaging power, yet there was still a good bit in the reserve fill. Haastal heaved, his breathe growing thin as he picked Redd up. "Just...a bit...more..." He muttered, as he worked to grind his armored arms around Redd. It was rather awkward, yet it would give the woman a break.

His armor's hydraulic systems activated from the pressure of Redd's own armored form. He felt his muscles relax as the weight of the wolf was slowly drained away and it became easier and easier to advance with her. He sighed in relief before watching his helmet's sensors flash erratically. "
You're...not allowed....to leave me...all...I...got....left." He breathed, his breathing growing more erratic. Haastal chuckled dryly as he noticed what the structure before them was. A mining factory. The building itself seemed quiet, abandoned even, however it showed no signs of being decades abandoned. "These things...are designed to defend against the heat...maybe have some water..." He said.

INHALATION

The wolf felt Haastal grab for her and she turned to view him just as he told her not to move. She felt his arms wrap around her, as awkward as it was due to the fact that they were both wearing armour and felt him lift her up into his arms. Redd listened to the heave and his breathing growing thin. It worried her and she rested her head upon his shoulder for a moment as she listened to his heart beat. She could hear it thump strongly within his chest and it almost called to her like a lullaby, one that wanted to sweep her under into a sleep that was calling to her. Yet she couldn’t. Not yet. Her mate wasn’t safe yet and although he kept telling her not to focus on him, it was exactly her focus on him that kept her going.

She coughed some more and felt the burn of the soot and ash along her windpipe, but instead she listened to Haastal’s words and breathing. Of which troubled her somewhat and her ears flickered back. ’Ok Haastal, you can put me down now.’ Redd said as she wriggled a little in his arms to mean exactly that until he released her. ’You need your strength as well,’ The wolf said as she coughed some more and brought up more mucus. Shaking her head to remain focused and present, her golden eyes lifted to view the factory. ’We don’t know what’s in there, but hopefully there is some kind of communications system that you can use to call someone to come get us.’

Finally she paused as she turned to look up at her mate. ’I’ll never leave you. Even if I die. My spirit will always be with you. So I’ll never leave, but I’m beginning to get worried about you. You’re still not fully recovered from the crash, you inhaled the soot and ash, plus you’re breathing is erratic. I’m worried about you. Which is normal, because you’re my mate and I don’t want you to leave me.’ Or I may just lose my mind, she finished inside of her head as she shook it to wake herself up. ’We need to get in there,’ Redd said with a touch of urgency and she slowly made her way up to the factory and paused for a brief moment as she felt a dizzy wave overcome her. She had to dig her claws in, which partially shredded the bandages upon her paws, but at least she was able to stay upright and not stagger or sway. The last thing she needed was for Haastal to worry about her some more when he was the one that had suffered the most during the crash.

Another coughing spree caused her to lower her head again and cough up more mucus and she lowered her ears for a moment as she wondered if she had pushed her lupine abilities too far. Even her nose felt like it could only smell soot and ash from the amount of sniffing that she had done to get them this far. The wolf had lost track of time well and truly, but she didn’t mind. It would all be worth it if they could get off of this desolate planet. Her golden eyes looked to Haastal then as she drew in more labored breaths and with each breath it felt as if her chest was tightening with the effort to breathe. ’I don’t know what’s in here. It could be anything. Everything about Mustafar does not appear to be something that I know. There aren’t even animals in this place, but I don’t blame them. This planet is not a planet that I would voluntarily live on,’

When they finally reached the Factory Haastal couldn't help but exhale in relief. He set Redd down on the metallic floor which was made of heat resistant metals. He lowered himself down to a knee for a moment before waving a hand at his mate. "I...I'm fine..." He breathed out before shaking his head and pushing himself to a standing position. The Mandalorian glanced up at the grim, abandoned structure that was before them. It wasn't exactly motivating.

When Redd spoke of her spirit being with Haastal he shook his head. "No, Mandalorians die in battle, not on some stupid planet like this." He breathed before walking to the factories main door and pressing his hands to them. He glanced over to a nearby panel and gazed at it. It seemed to have no power to it, but that wasn't to say it was totally useless. "I can plug into it...feed it enough power to get the door open." He said, before glancing back at Redd when she began to cough and spit out mucus. She'd been doing that more and more and now Haastal was done letting his woman suffer at the hands of this hellish planet.

"Kark it. HUD activate, target lock front." He said, stepping back from the door as he ushered Redd to step back from where they had been standing. Haastal stared at the door for a moment before muttering. "Fire." He commanded into the helmet. There was a rocket on the back of his pack which fired into the air. The rocket had been target-locked for the main door into the facility. When the rocket impacted in let out a devastating explosion, causing smoke and dust to fly all around the two. Haastal waved his hand before breathing out angrily. "I hate this place..." He muttered before making his way forward. The two door's had been effectively blown open.

The Mandalorian pulled his blaster pistol from his hip as he stepped inside. He kept the pistol up while moving inside the darkened facility. They made it a few steps down the hall when he pulled his buy'ce off once again. Although the factory was stuffy and the air was stale, it was better than it had been outside. Haastal let clean air fill his lungs for a while until he leaned over onto the wall. "I really hate this place..." He chuckled out.

FACTORY

Redd had angled her head slightly to the right when he had mentioned that Mandalorians died in battle and not like this. Did he consider her to be a Mandalorian even though she hadn’t gone through all of the training? Golden eyes watched as her mate seemed to appraise the door, only to wonder why he didn’t simply push it or use a handle. That was until he mentioned power and she was reminded of the doors on the ship that they had crash landed in. Her ears flickered back at the thought and wondered about the factory itself for a moment. She had fully settled in waiting for Haastal to feed it power, but her chest tightened just as she felt the familiar burn of her throat and lungs while she began to cough up more black mucus.

The wolf had just coughed it up when her mate ushered her back away from the door and she sat behind him and watched with interest. Then he said fire and she ducked her head as the sound of the explosion echoed inside her ears. Of which made them rang and Redd almost missed the fact that Haastal had said anything. She shook her head as she lifted a paw to paw at one of her ears and she couldn’t agree more with her mate’s words. The wolf hated this planet as well and when her hearing began to finally return, she coughed before moving slowly into the factory behind Haastal. Quietly, she watched him move his helmet, before she herself took gulps of air that was far cleaner than that of outside. Plus the overall temperature was a lot cooler than that of outside and she instantly noticed the difference.

As she wheezed, she slowly moved over towards Haastal and resisted the urge to lay down upon the floor and pass out. She stole a moment to take a breath that made her throat and lungs feel as if they were on fire, before she shifted. The tail disappeared and her nose shorted while her fur seemed to shrink downwards into pale skin until she stood on two legs. Redd stumbled and caught herself on a wall while her legs quivered with the effort to keep her standing. She gasped as she tried to draw in the fresh air and she lifted a hand to remove her buy’ce. Her lips parted as she was about to say something and another wracking cough tore through her body. Quietly she turned away from Haastal as she spat the following black mucus from her mouth while she lifted a hand to wipe at the sweat that was slowly drying upon the skin of her forehead.

After she took a moment to gather herself, Redd turned back to her mate and green eyes watched him as she offered a weak smile. Only, the wolf then lifted a hand to rest upon his cheek. ”I hate this planet too,” She said in between words that gasped for air. Almost as if she just couldn’t get enough oxygen, but she pushed through it and nodded towards the hallway. ”The scents travel down that way, but something doesn’t feel right Haastal and I’m not talking about the ash and soot. These scents. I don’t recognize the species and that makes me weary. If I don’t know what they are then we could be up for anything.”

Her hand lifted as she coughed up more black mucus and she turned away from Haastal to spit it out as she leaned heavily upon the wall while she felt her world shift in another wave of dizziness that washed over her. Redd lifted a hand to her chest and gasped some more as she felt her chest tighten with each breath. Something told her that there was a problem and not just with their situation, but she shoved it down only to look back at her mate. She reached down to pull a medium-sized dagger from her thigh plate then, a dagger which she had kept since their first Beskar run. ”Hopefully, they will be willing to help. If not. We kill them, because I want off of this god forsaken planet.”

With every breath he took, Haastal felt grateful not to be out in the harsh elements of the planet. He'd remained leaned against the wall until he heard Redd's sweet voice fill his ears. His eyes had closed and he was focusing on getting his breathing back together, but to hear her voice caused his lips to instinctively curl into a smile which only widened when he felt her hand come over his cheek. Haastal reached up, cupping her own hand inside his while he lightly chuckled at her words. When Redd gestured down the hall, Haastal glanced over to the shadow shrouded hall and breathed out one final time. "We need to see if this place has power." He said, pushing off the wall and pulling his buy'ce back on. The air regulator was working better now, making it much cooler inside of his armor. So Haastal activated the lights on the side of his helmet and led the way down the shadowy hall.

His steps were slow and paced. Each one bringing him deeper into the darkness. The hall they traveled in was lined with thick metal walls. There seemed to be no doors along the length of the hall, only service hatches and the occasional vent. They moved down the hall and eventually they found a massive set of blast doors. The door's were made of a different metal than the rest of the facility. Haastal approached the door and lightly racked his knuckles against it.

"Reinforced with Phrik...goddamn." He muttered.

"We're not gettin' through this without some heavy ordinance. Like a damn tank." He muttered. The Mandalorian glanced around the hall when his eyes caught sight of a service door just beside the large bulkhead. The Mandalorian walked over to the door and grabbed the handle, however it seemed jammed shut. He leaned into the door trying to get it to open, but it would not give. Eventually he backed up for a moment before barreling forward, slamming his shoulder into the door. The locking mechanism shattered from his weight and the door came open.

The room they stayed in seemed to be some kind of service terminal. Large metallic pipes of wire flowed directly into the terminal. "Oh hell, this must be the room where they control the power." He said, before walking over to the terminal and looking over the console. It was a bit dated, but it still seemed to function. There was a main power switch on the wall behind them which Haastal pointed to. "Flip that switch." He said. When Redd flipped the switch then there would be a low rumbling that echoed through out the facility. The terminal that Haastal sat at came to life, a faint glow illuminating over the room just before the lights above flickered to life as well. Even the vents allowed cool air to flow directly into the stuffy room. While on the terminal Haastal began to tap into the system. "Outer Rim Mining Operations huh....no wonder the facility is so cheaply made. Fuckin' lazy asses." He muttered, before tapping through the information on the terminal. "Looks like this terminal doesn't have a comm hook-up, but...facilities like this usually have some kind of long-range term-"

Just then a loud metallic scraping sound screamed out. From the hall, it was faint yet the two of them could very vividly hear it. Haastal glanced back at Redd for a moment before turning back to the terminal. "I'm sure that's somethin' good." He muttered. He kept going through the schematics and information tab until something piqued his interest. "Ok, in the center of the complex over here there is a comm terminal. Only problem is this power terminal isn't the only one in the facility, there is another one on the other side that provides the power for that comm terminal."

He continued tapping into the terminal before there was the sound of the large metallic door's on the outside of the room opening up. "Ok, lets go Redd." He said, before rising up and turning out into the hall.

When the Mandalorian got into the hall his steps slowed to an abrupt halt. The hall before him that had been hidden behind the blast doors was now revealed to him.

It was a massacre.

Bodies laid all over the hall, fouled by time in the hot facility they filled the air with a sick aroma. Haastal looked over the rotting corpses stained in dry, foul blood. He glanced from one to another before he contorted his face in disgust. "What the fuck happened he-" That was when there was a low, hellish shriek that echoed down from the hall, causing Haastal to raise his blaster pistol. "Get behind me." He told Redd.

FACTORY

”Power,” Redd muttered as she pulled on her buy’ce and activated the light on her own helmet so then she could see better. One of the only heightened senses that lupine didn’t get. See in the dark. However, she could work with the rest of her senses. Barely. It was as if someone was draining her ability to use her sense of smell and she wasn’t at all surprised. The amount of soot and ash that had probably traveled down her nose, throat and lungs had probably done some damage and until she was safe and sound in a secure area, an area where she could shift; healing would be slower than if she would be in wolf form. Yet even as she traveled down the hallway with Haastal, she kept her free hand rested lightly upon the wall beside her. For with every step she took, it felt as though she was swaying like a drunken fool all over again.

She listened when he spoke of the door being reinforced with Phrik and she couldn’t help but be amazed at the fact that he could just simply tell that by rapping his knuckles against it. Slowly she eased over towards the door and pressed her free hand against it, only to copy her mate’s movements by rapping her own against it. Redd paused and then turned as she opened her mouth to question him about it, but he slammed through another door and she followed suit. The wolf blinked but followed suit, only to pause to flip the switch that Haastal pointed to. More coughing sought that she removed her helmet quickly so then she could spit the black mucus once again and she leaned against the doorframe.

Green eyes watched as her mate began to tap into the system and she listened to the words that he spoke, but her gaze shifted to the hallway when she heard the metallic scraping sound. A low growl rumbled from the woman but it was cut short as she dragged in yet another breath of air. Damn this planet. It was as if the ash and soot was made deliberately to weaken anyone who dared to try and cross Mustafar to raid whatever these factories had. ”What’s the purpose of this factory?” The wolf questioned as another coughed racked her pale form. If she wasn’t already pale, she was certainly growing pale as she returned to leaning heavily against the doorframe.

Yet even as she questioned the factory, she noted that Haastal was focused upon the terminal before him and what he said made her shake her head. ”So we have to go to two different locations before we can manage to communicate to someone who can help get us out of here?” Her voice held a touch of disbelief at the disorganization. It was as if they were deliberately making it harder for them to leave the wretched dead planet. However, as they exited the room and towards the room that had been sealed behind the blast doors, a sight was stretched out before them. One that the wolf had seen before. The smell was very familiar as well and Redd quietly pulled the buy’ce back over her head.

Sadly, she didn’t feel an inner horror, nor did she react to the sickly scent of the dead. ”This is the scent that I followed. These are the people that we tracked through the ash and soot only to be killed by whatever killed them. Do you think that they had deliberately sealed themselves in here to stop whatever killed them from getting out?” Redd quietly mused as she crouched down by one of the dead bodies and lightly touched the wound. It was nothing that she had ever seen before and a frown creased her brow. ”Everything about this planet is so dif-” Her words were cut off by the low hellish shriek and she softly growled, but only managed to end up coughing and winced in pain. The woman’s condition was slowly deteriorating and she moved to stand back behind her mate as he pointed his blaster, but she shifted her hold upon the dagger in her hand so then she was ready. Just in case.
