Hunting on Corbos

The Togorian glanced at the cave enterence as they approached it, frowning. The thing could be just inside the cave, or miles in, or waiting for them to come in... He'd heard stories about leviathons. How they supposedly devoured entire teams of Jedi when they used to attempt to fend them off. He didn't want to become one of those horror stories.

Mrrew raised his Chiru rifle and stpeped into the cave enterance, his bare paws making practically no noise against the hard stone. When [member="Triam Akovin"] asked about the 'night vision', Mrrew slowly turned in the dark; the meager light reflecting from his eyes, making them appear to glow in the dark. Which probably looked scary as feth.

"We won't need spotlights."

[member="Mrrew"]

"Good. Less things for me to worry about." Unfortunately for Mr. Scary-Kitty, Triam was much too busy being a bossy business woman communicating with a network of machines. One thing was already apparent, there were no Heat Signatures immediately ahead of them. Which was good for the exact fears of her feline friend. The cave system appeared to be only minimally complicated, and she quickly realized there would be soon an apparent path that their monstrous prey would even consider taking, considering its size.

Suddenly, Triam decided to acknowledge her bosses presence. He was indeed feline, and felines have good noses. Unlike her, he would be able to detect bio-waste sooner than she ever would. The pervading stench of a beast this size would surely become overpowering when they got close. Her drones had yet to detect anything promising, so maybe his particular racial skill would push them in the right direction.

"Mrrew my friend, do you happen to smell anything stinky? My droids have yet to find any substantial evidence of our targets presence here."

Mrrew stopped midstep, and frowned slightly. Anything stinky? He hadn't read anything about Leviothons stinking anymore then any other large carnivore... He frowned slightly, and turned back to [member="Triam Akovin"], blinking a few times before responding.

"...Do you realize i'm not a Wookiee?"

The Togorian turned back towards the passageway they were heading towards again, still frowning. He did, however, sniff the air a few times... just in case. There was something in the air, but it smelled old. Wasn't the droid's whole purpose to find the monster so they didn't have to? Mrrew sighed.

"How much farther?"

[member="Mrrew"]

"Hey, don't take this in a speciest way or anything, but you are a kriffin' cat or something. Wookie my ass. Anyway, how am I supposed to know how much longer? For all I know we've been chasing shadows from the beginning! These are like, mythologically insane creatures we're dealing with. It's gonna take a while before we even get a whiff of it. Although my droids will help with that, since we have logically narrowed down the entire planet to the most likely cave anywhere, based on statistical data. Who knows? Maybe we'll not only be lucky enough to find one, but to find one sleeping!" Hopeful thoughts Triam, hopeful thoughts.

But she was right anyway, if their sources on the credibility of these things actually existing and not some weird ass folk lore, here would be the cave to be searching. It has the girth to fit one in, it is in the general area of three sites credited with being wiped out by one, and it had a big ass biosignature somewhere in it. The only things left to find was its hibernation den, which is where the drones scattered out through the cave system would come in, and confirm the biosignature with a heat signature. After that the difficult part of the journey would be hurtled, and then it would just be a hike to shoot the thing into a coma.

... then somehow they would have to haul it out of here. That would be a fun party trick.

"So I guess you're not as beast as I thought you were? You don't smell anything conducive of a several tonne creature taken a huge ass dump somewhere in its den?" Her drones were thankfully starting to see a gradual increase in bio-markings around their tunnels, but for she knew it was just the natural fauna scattering throughout the cave, like bats or something. If estimates were correct, they were at least an hour away walking.

Mrrew smiled as [member="Triam Akovin"] bena to rant. He knew this wasn't some kind of myth, thhere was simply to much data on them. Plus, a customer wouldn't order a mythical creature, would they? However, he didn't say anything. He made a mental note to see the look on Triam's face when they stumble upon one of them... He imagined that the biosignature would be faint- that's probably why the drones hadn't found it yet. He read somewhere that creatures in hibernation slow their heart rate, and drop their bodily temperatures... He was beginning to wonder if the drones could find this thing at all. And as far as smelling it's waste...

"Wherever it is, it's probably been asleep since the last time there was a settlement here. Hundreds of years. Scat tends to lose it's smell after a century or two..."

Mrrew chuckled in the dark, his ears flicking constnatly for the smallest noises. He knew that it was fairly huge, meaning it couldn't have been in any of the smaller caverns... that ruled it down.

"Have your drones scout the biggest caves in the area, don't bother with the smaller ones."

[member="Mrrew"]

"Fair point I guess, but we need to use every strategic advantage we can muster to find this thing. I just thought someone without a human nose might be helpful, because let's face it, human noses suck major balls." She chuckled faintly as her eyes rapidly vibrated to the switching screens in HUD, taking in thermal data like a sponge to water. The farther into the system they got, the less and less complicated it became. Naturally, the bigger caves would become more and more sparse, and allocating these probes into these regions would become that much easier every time they eliminated a branching segment that lead nowhere they wanted to go.

This was why Jedi had a hard time finding these things. There were the innumerable caves to consider, they needed man/droid power, specialized scanners and every other thing under the sun. If they found one today it was likely to be out of sheer luck, rather than any degree of skill to her testament. So far, it looked like this cave might be barren, but it still fortunately held promise. Probe readings were bringing back reports indicating that the initial biosignatures were not misleading. There were definitely things that were alive down here.

"Heh, don't mind my pompousness, but... duh! The probes are doing the best they can, and so far have found promising readings of bioactivity down here, but its minimal. We may just be looking at a complicated subterranean ecosystem, or we could be on the trail of the sleeping giant. Without reliable heat signatures, we won't know. Fortunately the number of large cave openings is quickly narrowing down to our inevitable conclusion. The path to our destination is quite twisty and windy, and hopeful estimations indicate we may be able to reach there within an hour and a half, give or take 30 minutes at a walk." She really was hoping they were lucky today. Even a portion of the 5 mil made her salivate.

Of course, if she just freaking finished Popo's order she'd be sitting pretty in 100 mil. But you live and learn. She bit off more than she could chew back then and now it was going to bite her in the butt. She still had three tonnes of material to hunt down, and she wasn't pleased with the quality of her last acquisition op. But back to the problem at hand, which was money making.

"Hey," She said in a break of silence. "If we ever find the Levi today, wanna make a small bet? We could play with like... 1,000 credits, nominal stuff. I'm curious to see if you think it will wake up or not when we arrive." A few probes were beginning to pick up faint signatures of heat. Which was exciting stuff.

Mrrew chuckled again at Triam's insult to humans, and glanced back. Before he had been taken off his home world, he'd never even seen a human. He couldn't believe that any species so frail and small could be so common in the galaxy... he figured people like the Wookiees and Herglics, or at very least those like the Columni, would've taken over. But, humans had to have something going for them if they were so common.... Mrrew shrugged

He doutbed that there was much life in the cave, ecpecially if there was a Leviathon down here. His eyes, still glowing faintly, flickered around the cave network as they moved on, trying to remember every which way they went. The last thing they needed was to tranqulize the beast then get lost in the caves trying to get out.... He hoped [member="Triam Akovin"]'s droids were documenting the way.

Mrrew glanced back as she mention betting. "They say they only wake up when there's large settlements, or force sensitives nearby. Pending that you're not force sensitive, it shouldn't wake up any time soon. I'm willing to bet on it." Or prehaps it was just hopeful thinking. If it did wake up, they'd have a lot more trouble...

[member="Mrrew"]

"I dunno, I bet if we're making a big deal out of finding it'll probably realize what's up. After all, I got like a dozen probes whizzing around trying to find it, and I bet that monster can read minds or something. Not really sure, I'll be honest in saying I've never heard of these things before today. I bet 1,000 we'll have to tranq it before it kills us, against your bet it'll stay asleep... unless somehow I end up being force sensitive... which would blow so much ass you wouldn't even know." She shook her head as she thought about how many of her accomplishments would be degraded if it ended up being she was just being aided by demi-god uber-force. She liked to think her mind and her tech gave her strength, not some mystical hoo haw she'd never fully understand. Kinda like this magic belt that held more ammo clips then she put in. Don't even ask her how the hell that worked, she just bought it at an auction!

Suddenly one of the probes picked up something big. It was faint like Mrrew said, low bio signs, low heat, but damn did the size and scope match! It was just around the corner for the droid remote, probably a 20 minute run for her and Mrrew (okay, lets be honest, 20 minute run for her, like, 10 minute run for him; but that wasn't counting how she could with her repulsor pack!). She began to funnel the droids to triangulate and confirm the large signature. She still had her doubts, but this was looking extra promising.

"Hold on, we might have found our target! I can't believe it!" She picked up her stride, and got her Chiru rifle ready.

As soon as those last words left [member="Triam Akovin"]'s mouth, Mrrew entire manner changed. He walked much quicker, but his padded paws didn't make a noise against the stone ground, he raised his Chiru rifle to his shoulder, staring down it's barrel as he moved. His ears flickered constantly at the smallest noise, registering any sounds and documenting them. Every muscle in his body tensed and relaxed- not out of fear, just getting ready. They were no longer exlporing a cave system looking for a beast, now they were hunting it. It coudl wake at any moment, or it could stay asleep. For all he knew, there were more then one. But he was ready. One large clawed finger was readied on the trigger of his Chiru rifle, the saftey flicked off as he moved quickly and silently.

It was time to hunt Leviothon.
