  • Accelerator amplifying chamber produces particle bolts.
  • Multiple fire modes allow a single unit to adapt to a changing battlefield.
  • Variable Scope adapts to the zoom needs of the selected fire mode.
  • Adjustable length buttstock.
  • Built-in light.

  • Seasonal >> The Igneus Gladius is capable of transitioning between four fire modes: sniper, rifle, shotgun, and carbine.
  • Punishing >> All fire modes are capable of inflicting considerable damage that their form factors is capable of producing. Tradeoffs were made elsewhere, such as not adding extra gyroscopic stabilization for the shotgun or carbine.
  • Lightspeed >> In sniper mode the weapon is able to reach any target on the battlefield, and the rifle is able to reach any target in visual range.
  • Flares >> The particle bolt emitted by the sniper, rifle, and carbine are known to 'splash' on impact resulting in collateral damage. The scattergun/shotgun is designed to spread out over distance to cover a wide area of effect, or produce a close-up and unrepentant destructive blow. Both aid in pacifying the Imperium's enemies.

  • Rotation Time << It takes one to three seconds to switch between fire modes, which may prevent a user from switching modes if the enemy has already closed the gap, and may make the weapon significantly less effective as a result.
  • Tidal Lock << While built to last, it is possible damage inflicted on the weapon could cause it to become jammed in a particular fire mode. Since the weapon requires two types of ammunition, it is possible for a user to be locked in a mode they no longer have ammunition for.
  • No Survivors << The Igneus Gladius was not designed to take prisoners; all of its fire modes were designed to create collateral damage. This makes taking hostile targets alive challenging, and hostage situations especially difficult. The Imperium strongly believes in the old blaster principle: never point your weapon at something you don't intend to destroy.
  • A Furnace << In order to fit the scattergun/shotgun fire mode into the weapon, it was necessary not to add additional heat dissipation needed for rapid-firing physical ammunition (slugs). As a result, this fire mode can generate significant heat over time and may damage the weapon if not properly utilized.
  • Supermassive << As a heavy weapon in all fire modes, it cannot be wielded or wielded effectively by all lifeforms.

The Astrorum Imperium employs particle beam weaponry and slugthrowers just as often as it does lasers or blasters on its ships, such as the S.A.A. Aether, and continues that tradition with its ground forces. This is especially the influence of The Constellation: Aestus, which is responsible for creating the overwhelming majority of both platforms.

The most effective knight on the battlefield is one that causes their opponent to surrender -- voluntarily or otherwise -- and the Igneus Gladius is designed to help people make their life-decisions swiftly. Capable of shifting between four fire modes to accommodate long-range, mid-range, and close-proximity fighting, the weapon enables knights on the field to push through any obstacle.

A consequence of the philosophy of overwhelming force, of course, is that it makes taking people alive far more difficult. This is especially difficult in hostage situations where the splash damage will likely injure or kill the hostage if the Igneus Gladius is used to pacify the hostage taker behind them. No one said being a knight in the service to the Imperium was easy.

Its heft requires those utilizing it (and those simply trying to lift it) to have a certain amount of upper body strength. That weight, however, does help keep the recoil down to a minimum in the longer-ranger fire modes. It can also make the weapon an effective club if ammunition runs out.
