Braze Braze

He wasn't wrong. Noble was a sort of "meaningful name" in that regard, same as people named Smith who hadn't touched a hammer in their life or Potter and knew nothing of clay. Not that Valery or Kahlil weren't noble in terms of the virtue, of course. Kahlil even was noble by blood, so it fit to some extent.

But for, say, Colette who was a stray mutt from a backalley nobody had ever heard of…

"I mean… Yeah, actually. I didn't have a last name." Colette shrugged as she descended down the rocky cliff's edge. "But, the Jedi Order is my group now."

"If I wanted to belong in a happy family, sure, I'd ask Valery too — but I wasn't meant for that, remember? I really just thought it'd be neat to have a last name, and hers was the first one I thought of."

"She was the one who took it as an adoption thing, and… I mean, yeah, I could have said no, but—"

"Look. You get what I mean. Sometimes things happen no matter if you try to or not. Call it the force."

"Doesn't matter... Well, it does. Our pasts do shape who we become, they're a part of our identity. But it's in the past, and we can move on now. You're here, and that means you're meant to be loved by your friends and family. You have a place where you belong. Valery wants you to be part of her family, and that means you're wanted."

Braze revealed, "Jasper wanted me, so now we're family. And for the first time in a long time, I feel wanted, like I belong. I think what I hated most was feeling like my parents didn't want me when they left me at the temple. But with Jasper... well, I love Jasper," Braze added, his tone lighter.

What Braze said gave cause for a moment of silence. Colette looked at him and then back out over the landscape beyond the cliff's edge.

"I mean, yes." She said with an absent-minded blink. "I am grateful that she wants me in her family and that the children accept me."

"What I mean to say is that I struggle with the idea of a family, and that I don't know how to think about having an actual mother."

"Always knew my real one hated me enough to leave me to die. Felt a strong belonging in my old clan, same as I do in the Jedi now. I… Understand the idea of family, but it's not really as important as people seem to tell me it is. It's just another kind of group of people. You can replace it with others."

Braze gave Colette a goofy grin as they approached the three dragons once more. "That's okay... You have time to learn," he said simply. "I dunno if I would consider it a replacement. I don't think anyone is really replaceable.... That's why I don't call Jasper my dad... I already have a dad... I call him .... something else.... usually, since he's like... my second dad. No one ever said I had to have just one."

As they neared the dragons, Braze held out the delicate flower they had retrieved. The three dragons exchanged glances, clearly impressed by their success.

Tempest, the Stormclaw, eyed them with a gleam of mischief in his eyes. Without a word, he inhaled deeply, his chest expanding as the air around them seemed to electrify. He huffed out a powerful breath toward the sky, and almost instantly, the atmosphere responded. Dark clouds began to gather, swirling and churning as they merged above the group.

Lightning flickered within the rapidly forming storm, and with a final crack of thunder, the clouds opened up, releasing a torrent of rain. It wasn't a fierce, howling storm, but rather a steady, relentless downpour, the kind that soaked through to the bone in seconds. Cold water cascaded down, drenching them in an instant, and Tempest gave them a cheeky, almost playful look, his eyes alight with amusement. It was clear that he was enjoying this little display, showing off his power while making their return just a bit more memorable.

Despite the sudden deluge, the winds remained calm, as if Tempest was intentionally holding back the full fury of his storm, allowing them to experience the rain without being battered by the elements. His expression suggested he found the whole situation rather entertaining, as if this was his way of welcoming them back and acknowledging their efforts with a bit of playful fun.

"Impressive," Tempest, the Stormclaw, rumbled, his voice filled with approval. "You've shown resilience, resourcefulness, and a bit of wit. It seems we underestimated you."

Wildfire, the Pyroclast, stepped forward next, her eyes glowing with fiery intensity. With a graceful yet deliberate motion, she extended a claw toward Braze, her sharp talons surprisingly gentle as she took the flower from his hand. "Not bad for such small creatures," she teased, though there was respect in her tone. "You faced the elements, solved the riddle, and retrieved a treasure. You've earned our attention."

Mistral, the Galecrest, smiled gently, her voice as soothing as the rain around them. "You've proven yourselves worthy of our stories and our secrets," she said warmly. "But remember, with knowledge comes responsibility. We will share with you what we know, but it is up to you to use it wisely."

Time to learn. Colette gave a frown and a nod. It didn't feel like something she should have had to learn as much as something she should have just understood. The dragons were nearby and they were all too happy to see the duo. Or perhaps more accurate was to say that they were happy to get the chance to soak them in rain.

Colette put her arms on her hips and swayed back and forth on her heel and the pad of her feet. Mud formed in the exposed parts of the ground around them. The grass seemed thankful, and so did the trees.

The rain came to an end, and it was as if the water just poured right off of Colette. Her skin dry as before, her clothes perhaps a little more damp but not as damp as they should have been. The girl was good at handling water, and rain was nothing more than tiny fractions of water falling from the sky.

She looked at Braze and gently let her hand sweep from pointing at his head to his toes. The water on his skin would seem to pour off just as easily as it had on her. His clothes damp, his skin dry-ish. Most of what had been there had gently pattered to the ground in front of him just as it had for her.

Colette looked to Braze, uncertain what to ask.

"How does it work? The rain. Are you somehow connected to the planet itself?"
