For the better part of multiple decades, the Darktrooper Corps, comprised of Sith-Imperial and other veterans of the numerous empires and galactic powers the one known as Onrai had been a part of, had relied on the suite of the old Mk III Sith-Imperial Legionnaire Combat Armor. While other developments such as the armor for Bloodtroopers, Radtroopers, and Darktrooper Commanders gave greater levels of protection or more specialized features and functionality to the cyborg soldiery, experiences on the ambush at Ord Mantell caused Onrai to receive an epiphany: the relics of the past simply were not good enough for her, or for the forces of any in the Dark Empire. So it was that she returned to her roots, her avatar and manifestation in the form of that conniving Sith and technology designer, Vanessa Vantai, to develop a new set of armor suitable for the newest generation of soldier.
The Imperial Infantry Exoskeleton is comprised of three main layers. The first and simplest is an armorweave bodyglove, comfortable enough and providing near-total body protection to minimize the risks of injury at joints. Over this was integrated a light exoskeleton, weaker than that of the older Darktrooper Commander suit but significantly more compact, and powered by an energy crystal better buried in the suit than that of the experimental Bloodtrooper armor, the power source for the suit's systems. The exoskeleton provides somewhat more strength to the wearer and helps mitigate the burden of the outer armor layer, comprised of molecularly bonded armor sandwiched between a layer of energy-absorbing adamithium and radiation-insulating agrinium. The resulting armor compares well in defensive capabilities to the old Sith-Imperial armor it replaces in the hands of the Darktroopers, to Bloodtrooper armor, and to Radtrooper armor, effectively providing all parts of Onrai's forces - and the wider Dark Empire - with better plate than they were previously wielding.
The armor's systems are focused on protection, detection, and survival - ensuring the soldier within is safe, aware of their environment, and capable of surviving if cut off from their squad or unit. Having been placed into initial production post-Tython, the armor is in high demand within the Dark Empire as frontline units shift to its use, with backline or reserve units - including a portion of the Darktrooper Corps - still using their older armors as the transition to new suits take place.
