Imperial Military - Rehaul

Caius Flavian

Faction Admin - The Galactic Republic
Welcome aboard to one the of most iconic armed forces in fiction and in-verse one of the greatest to have subjugated the galaxy.

The Galactic Empire has gone through many iterations and successor states, dozens of claimants to the glory that was held so long ago.
No matter which government though rises there is and has always been the classic look and strength of the Storm Troopers, the Star Destroyers of the star fleet.

This forum is the general OOC forum for the Imperial Military where everything pertaining to it can be discussed. From thread planning to character development ideas and just general chit chat of blowing up teddy bears.

A few goals I have in mind for the military are as follows
  • Make a new roster as a quick reference for people to use to help find other people interested in threading a military story
  • Make a guide thread to encourage development of military Units from the humble storm trooper squad to a Victory III to use in scale with missions, skirmishing, dominions, invasions, and rping in general!
  • Consolidate the guides and present resources to help with military rping!

I have a few threads cooked up to help reestablish some basic structuring to this forum and the Imperial Navy and Army Subforums.
This is what I have so far. Let me know what you think! Input is appreciated. Lets keep marching forward for the Glory of the Empire!

Imperial Storm Corp
The Storm Corp of the Galactic Empire is the a ground, air, space, and aquatic based force which closely operates in conjunction with the Imperial Navy.
History of the Corp
There have been many claimants and pretenders to the Galactic Empire’s government. From successor states to failed governments incapable of upholding the Imperial Ideology. Through it all the Storm Trooper has been one of the most resilient and recognizable force in the galaxy. Many of these fine warriors have turned to the One Sith becoming less than pawns for the fodder of war. However the Galactic Empire has always been there. From the shadows of its former glory the staunch few Imperialists who remain loyal not the ideals of the Sith but to the Imperial Struggle that was laid down by the Emperor Palpatine oh so long ago. Under the guidance and collapse of many warlords and claimants to the banner the Storm Trooper has fought valiantly under the rule of Palpatine to the Dynasty of the Fels and beyond. In recent years since the passing of Gulag Plague there have been a number of factions in the galaxy who have stood up and tried to bring peace and order to what is chaos and discord in a galaxy of opportunists and corruption.
The Storm Trooper has been at every battle, every struggle, and has raised the flag of victory more than once over these last few decades. Still though the galaxy is wrought with division and it is this supreme fighting force which has fought under the regimes of Atrisian Monarch’s, Fel Monarchs, Warlords and pretenders, it is the Storm Trooper who has brought the wrath of the Empire down upon those who seek nothing more to allow endless cycle of war to continue.
It is now the time once more for the call to help raise the flag of victory across every world and it is the Storm Corp, the elite fighting force of the Imperial Military that shall do so over the corpses of those who would oppose peace, order, and security.

Organization
As of now the present organization has the Storm Corp functioning as the primary ground fighting force and operates from being forward deployed as part of the Imperial Navy.

Specialization
Storm Troopers are famous for their adaptability to any situation. Specialization begins at Battalion level where a battalion may have a number of its troopers or all of its troops trained in a specific specialization.

Special Operations Command
The Storm Commandos are administratively part of their own legion, but are broken down and attached to an operating force and scaled appropriately to the Commanders needs and requirements of the mission at hand.
They are the Special Forces of the Storm Corp and perform missions that the regular forces are not suited to perform. Storm Commandos are the best of the best and are trained to perform covert assaults, precision strikes, and sabotage operations against enemy forces. More importantly they are capable of operating deep behind enemy lines. This specialized command works closely with their parent branch the Storm Corp and is often part of Imperial Intelligence operations working with their operatives.
Storm Commandos are highly trained in numerous vehicles especially the TIE Hunter designed for the Commandos as a space superiority fighter.

Imperial Navy
The Star Fleet of the Galactic Empire is the primary space capable force able to project the power of the Imperial government where needed. Specific responsibilities of the Imperial Navy includ defending Imperial citizens from space-based threats such as pirates, smugglers, and other armed governments, enforcing Imperial will, and overseeing commerce through customs and blockade operations. The Imperial Navy also performs orbital bombardments, transports major ground force deployments, and supports them with space and aerial support.

for naval division I would like to see a line/squadron level. much like the imperial source book. I Think the Empire would not have strayed too far from that even after centuries.

Basically from the Imperial source book we would have
source

Command (1 Ship) - Basically single command generally commanded By a Lt. Commander for small escorts up to Captain for cruisers.

Line is a grouping of 2 to 6 ships depending on the roll and ship type. Various line types exist from skirmish to pursuit lines up to attack and bombardment lines. These are generally commanded by Line ranks from Line Commander for pursuit and recon lines which generally are made up of frigates and vettes to line captains who command cruiser, skirmish, and attack lines of heavy cruisers, and frigates. The Commodores will command Heavy Attack lines made up of light destroyers and heavy cruisers, Bombardment lines made up of ordinance heavy vessels and Destroyer lines which historically is a single Star Destroyer...

A squadron is a grouping of 3 to 5 lines depending on the type of the lines and the mission profile of the squadron. Like lines these too have role specific make ups. but I will not go into detail and bore everyone. IM sure some of you know what i am talking about and for any who do not I will link wiki for this.

Force is the largest collection of vessels generally operating as one cohesive group/ these are generally put to together out of groups for special operations. they can be as small as a line or as big as needed for the mission. basically a group and a force can be the same thing. some refer to things like battle groups or carrier groups which are basiclly a force. sometimes a Task force will be made up of battle groups if the force is large enough. These generally never work together but stay in close proximity to the force if needed.

Then there are fleets. These are large forces designated to a roles like system, sector, oversector fleet. Some are assault fleets, some defense. These can be as small as a squadron or as big as well thousands of ships. Oversector fleets were massive. some groups can be bigger than fleets but they are basically the same at this level

If this sounds confusing well it is sorta but its not. and it rally does not work well for role playing style fleets most of the time because everyone wants a big ship. generally a squadron will never have more than 1 destroyer line. each star destroyer is escorted by 3 to 5 smaller escort lines but almost no one will want to follow this structure. when looking at a 5000 meter fleet only 1 sd and the rest made up of 3 heavy or 6 light cruisers, 3 to 6 frigates and 6 to 12 corvettes. while it would be awesome if people would do this no one will. Also in in canon stories this is never used either, you see 3 star destroyers working together alot in books for some reason.

All That being said I would like the option to use this format for fleet building. Call me old school but this is how I have done it since the imperial source books came out in the early 90s. I like line ranks as it allows a captain to command a group of ships without having to be promoted to commodore or admiral.

Also can we have more tiers of admiral/general. Say A vice admiral and a brigadier. I am a firm believer in not having too many chiefs and not enough Indians. Sure everyone wants to be an admiral but it is just bad form. For people who are just persistent about being a general or admiral have them in the lower rank and only promote people to full general or admiral. I would be happy with fleeters starting out at captain and having to earn the ranks. When your talking about 3000 meters of fleet I do not see a need for an admiral when a Line Captain can do the job.

I know this is imaginary and nothing really matters but I do like some structure to my make believe.

as far as your scale I do not think an ensign should ever be considered an XO. and I do not like the whole your a certain rank you can only command a certain ship idea. It will present prospective fleeters with no chance to really fleet. for instance IM new and IM a lieutenant and can only command a corvette. WTH am I going to do with that. "hey lets do a 200 meter thread?" people will not want to do stuff that small. well most people, I would rock a 200 meter skirmish happily. No one wants to start out so low as they can not even roleplay. Maybe staring out as a commander would work but captain has always been where I started people on other forums and was where I was started. that way you can do 1000 meters and have a nice battle. Do we really need to start people out at LT level? most of the people here are not new and have higher ranks in other factions. lets say you have been here for 3 years and are an admiral in another factions will you want to make a character for the empire and start at lieutenant commanding a corvette?

I could keep going on on this subject but i will cut it off here. But to summarize I think starting people at captain and giving them up to a max 1500 meters to command will go along way it drawing fleeters rather than run them off with giving them a class limit to their rank which does not allow them to do anything on the forum. this limits them to light destroyers and make them have to work in order to get command of a full star destroyer. it also allows them to put together some nice cruiser groups, skirmish and attack lines and such. I know I may be alone in this but I would love to get away from all big ship battles. It is more realistic and fun for me to have multiple ship classes and types to carry out tactics rather then one ship I am limited to tactics with. Dont get me wrong I love big ships but a 5000 meter fleet should not just be 3 star destroyers. but this is my opinion.

Awesome input!

Sticking to the original is just as fine. None of this is set in stone! Inf act its just what I've conjured up as a mix of attempting to streamline and condense a basic format to give some structure to use in.
When i joined this faction back in October of last year I started out as a Lt. Commander. Several skirmishes and a dominion later made it up to this rank for this character. Now did I want Caius to start out so middle of the food chain? Not really but it gave plenty of room to grow as a mediocre fleeter from fighting with a small ship to several ships to an ISD III.

Well we can cross a few things out and such. The ranks were really to just help display some basic structure for now to go by and not necessarily law. No one is forced to be an Ensign. Its just there to show the order of things, we all can start out at which ever rank we really want. It just whether or not others will accept it both OOC and IC that matters.

Keeping to the Canon Command/Line/Squadron system is perfectly fine. My contention with the original organization is the present circumstances of the IR/GE. As of right now we've barely scratched the rping surface of our new home. Plus the vessels we have currently and how long it would take to even begin producing new ships to form lines and squadrons.

Clearly though passionate to get the Navy right there Lash! lets work together to make the Navy a powerful force!

Whats really awesome right now is that I just received the Imperial Handbook Commanders Guide! Great resource.

I'll pop on tomorrow night and mull a few things over. Perhaps we should thread in the Social forum on the current status and disposition of the navy.

I am open for what ever we need to do to get the Navy worked out. And yes I believe currently any structure based on standard Imperial formations would be impossible. I like us starting out in shambles and having something to work towards.

I started Lash out as a captain mainly because no one said "hey start as a LT commander." Lt commander is a good spot I guess if we were to do something like that. But like I said, a person would have to be able to work with a force that could actually do something. even if it is just one ship I still think limiting someone to a corvette is a bit extreme. Now if someone just wants to do corvettes maybe make them a LT Commander with a brevet Line Commander title and give them a corvette line to command. I always loved corvette actions.

For now I have lash on the heavy cruiser I am developing. that is also part of why I said "heck, no one has said differently so hes a line captain." I would never start out as a commodore or admiral that's just not cool in my opinion. Like i mean your a commodore and have put the work in. I think anyone else should have to do the same to get to a rank above captain or commander or what ever you decide.

I'm going all out on my DEV. for my cruiser and making it a sorta Pre-dominion for the extended regions campaign. Introducing the pirates and sorta setting the stage. I figured why not make it useful rather than just utility for a ship development.

Once we do get major I think maybe a navy thread based around us christening the first Star Destroyer to roll off the slipway would be a good idea. It would be a major thing for us as a faction.

Also we need to formalize a naval academy, Something like the knight have but for naval officers. It just fluff and for storytelling but having something like the Imperial Naval Academy on Prefsbelt IV on Sirat wen would be great.

Just to note, limited people to a starting rank is kinda silly at this point. Let them start at Grand Admiral if they want to. Worst case, demote them if they suck. Which is surprisingly rare.

Also. When a Faction goes Major they are assumed to have unlimited resources at that point. Story and IRL aside, the Pubs and Sith have been popping out insta-Fleets for years now. In fact, the combined death tool from every single Fleet engagement on this board since 2013, is about 100x the population of the entire galaxy at this point. So you don't need to worry about actually building a Fleet once you reach Major Status. It just magically appears. Poof! Just like unicorns and rainbows. Lulz.

The only time Fleets are ever limited are during Invasions, and that by the FA Pre-Fight Council.

InstaFleets keep bean counting at bay which is always a good thing. Also if were gonna start people at Grand Admiral I need to pull out the white uniform..... Just kidding.

I think some sort of limitation would be good. letting people start as a vice admiral I can see But I still vote for starting as a captain. It gives you access to basically any ship and with a Line rank give people a small line to command (3 to 6 ships) And how often will we use more than 3 to 6 ships in our fleets? It also give people something to work towards. Maybe make more upper ranks. Start Navy at Captain giving them Commodore Rear Admiral,Vice Admiral, and Fleet Admiral ranks. Start Army off as Colonels give them Brigadier, General, Marshal, and Commandant ranks to work towards.

I listed a group I will be using for some stuff. not anything serious or permanent just a list of ships i will be using that people may want to command or be crew on.

Right so given the current IC situation of being a minor power and such, here is a perhaps a break down and recommendation of rank usage!

High Command
(O11) Grand Admiral - Present moment only one member holds this distinct and prestigious rank. The Grand Admiral is also the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Military

Flag Officers/Admiralty
These ranks are officers who command multiple ships. The further up in rank the more strategic responsibilities are asked of those who hold such authority. Characters in these ranks will find that rather than commanding a single ship that instead roleplaying someone who is commanding the forces in their battle. As a flag officer your character gets to choose from which capital ship you dictate war!
This is recommended for anyone who is experienced at "Fleeting" or someone who is new who wants to give commanding a lot of ships at once. As a flag officer your concern is no longer on the running of a ship but a number of ships and managing the tactical situation as well as keeping the strategic plan in mind.

(O10) Admiral - Holds command over a Fleet
(O9) Vice Admiral - Typically holds command over a Force
(O8) Rear Admiral -Typically holds command over a Group
(O7) Commodore - Typically hold command over a Squadron

Roleplay considerations and recommendations!
Want to still command the ship? Have an NPC Captain for your capital ship! Adds more to your writing! Even better find another roleplayer to command your capital ship as you command the squadron/group/fleet from your ship!

Senior/Command Grade Officers
These ranks are held by those who hold command over ships. These ranks are recommended for those who are more focused on roleplaying command over a single ship of any size.

(O6) Captain - Is the only rank of the Senior Grade/Command that may hold command of a capital ship or battle station the size of a star destroyer and above. Captains are often in command of a Line as well as their own vessel. Captain of the Line is a title given to a captain who may be the commanding officer of a Line composed of Elements.

(O5) Commander - May hold command over of a capital ship the size of a Victory mkIII, and may hold command authority over several elements within a line.

(O4) Lieutenant Commander - While the beginning rank of command authority Characters that start out at this rank hold command over an Element.

Roleplay considerations!
Never feel restricted! Just because your character may only be a Lieutenant Commander doesn't mean you only get to play with one ship! My recommendation is "proxy" or write the other vessels in your line and their actions. Have back and forth chatter between your character and NPC.

Junior Grade Officers
These ranks are held by officers who have not yet earned enough exprience or merit to hold command over a vessel. Here primarily for use with NPCs onboard ships and what their ranks are. If a roleplayer wishes to play a character in any of the below rank note that it is very unlikely for them to under take command of a ship with certain exemptions available.

Lieutenant
Ensign
Midshipman

Order of Battle

Fleet - 2+ Forces
Force - 2+ Groups
Group - 2+ squadrons
Squadron - 2+ Lines
Line - 1 to 6 Elements, Capital ships are considered a single Line
Element - A single vessel, typcially not capital ship

Examples of Order of Battle

First Example

"Retribution" Squadron - Commanding Officer - Commodore Caius Flavian

Assault Line
Assault Line

Reconnaissance Element
  • IREC-840 - Recon One - Commanding Officer - Lt. Commander

Another example

"Vengeance" Squadron - Commanding Officer - Commodore

Another thing for roleplaying purposes and keeping things within the bounds of fun is just being flexibile with force composition when deciding and Order of Battle

Like for instance if we setup a skirmish or in the event of an invasion, the length limits often narrow the above use of an Order of Battle.

The best thing to do is think of it both as an administrative aspect of roleplaying in a military along with the OOC aspect of picking and choosing the right hand to play.

If we were to use the third example in just sheer length measurements we come out to roughly 9000 meters. A sizabe battle!

However if we had to scale things down and say its just a skirmish between 2000 meters total then we can cut all the way down to just a Line engagement.

So, just to make sure everyone is at an understanding here, is it fine if I, as a humanoid being, am allowed to command the entire Storm Commando division ICily? I mean I'm like the Commander of the whole tamale. since I'm the only damn Storm Commando here, and I was wondering, isn't my rank too low to be that, I'm literally just a measly Lieutenant over here. I already asked the Old Man (Admiral Aritus) if he was chill with that and he said he was.

Poof your a colonel! lol

No seriously I do no think anyone would have an issue with you being a Colonel.

Technically per the wiki and the Imperial Source book....
Stormtrooper Corps
Imperial Army

A legion would be commanded by a Colonel (High Colonel) roughly 10,000 storm troopers
A Regiment commanded by a Lieutenant Colonel roughly 2,500 storm troopers
a Battalion commanded by a Major with roughly 625 storm troopers

So its really what size the force is?

A corp (roughly 40,000 troopers) is basically All of the storm troopers in an army. A legion is the largest operational group of storm troopers. When someone says Stormtrooper corps, or Snowtrooper Corps so on and so forth they mean all of them.

A system army, if we have 3 full armies, would be about 400,000 troopers all together. That would give us 3 full storm trooper corps. so I figure that's about the size of our army. lets say each army has a full Stormtrooper Corp which is about 40,000 Stormtroopers. That would be 3 corps or 120,000 stormtroopers. So I figure with that many storm troopers we would have a full legion of Storm Commandos.

now all that being said in the sake of nerdom and OCD need to conform to the wiki military ideal. we can do what ever we want!!! HA... lol While I like this idea of a 400k army and about 120k stormtroopers total for the system it may not be how Waid or Caius want to do it. See Im the nerd with the ODC need to use the Imperial Source books lol.

Anyway IM making the Imperial Galactic Marines to use with my navy guy when I need to. Cause yeah IM cool that way, and I like the Maroon armor!

Lash

Stela'shlit'nuruodo
Yeah i was just saying I figured your rank would be colonel since we would have a full legion of storm commandos. I just went around by lauras house doing it.

[member="Lash"]

Yeah but the entire Storm Commando legion would not be as large as a Stormtrooper Legion, therefore not necessitating a Colonel to command it, I'd have figured that Captain would've been enough.

*Adds extra poof!*

Totally what Lash was saying!
If you want to be in charge of the storm commandos that is entirely fine by me, I'm a former Faction Admin thus meaning I'm just a reg joe here once again making suggestions and working together with you all to have some Imperial based fun! Mwuahahaha

If you would like an IC thread on this promotion, well all to easy!

From all the friggin training courses I've been through in my time with the US Navy this is the insight I can give you for the reasons why a Colonel, especially now In Character, would be appropriate for assuming command of the Storm Commandos.

Size of force does not always dictate the rank of the commanding officer. For example I'm currently assigned to a unit of only 120 personnel however I have an O6 (Captain USN) as my commanding officer along with a few other O6s in my Chain of Command.
On that note there are positions such as holding command of over an organization that are typically held by ranks higher than the actual incumbent. For example holding command in an O7 position as an O6, its great for career progression as it shows you are entrusted with that same level of authority.
Special Forces units are smaller and more compact organizations, a storm commando "squad" or unit is roughly 4-40 personnel according to the fluff. How many of these units you have is up to you. If you want to imagine an entire legion of storm commandos go for it.
Remember that ultimately someone higher in the Chain of Command has oversight, such as the council of moffs, the Supreme Commander, and typically the overall commander of whatever operation the Commandos are supporting, how you go achiveing the objectives though is entirely up to you!

Things to keep in mind is that being leader of the storm commandos does not mean its a desk job! This is star wars and it would be expected that participation in missions and leading from the front. Being a Colonel just means you can call on much more resources if needed.

I swear there were a few others who had joined as Storm Commandoes
I think [member="Razelle Breuner"] joined as one!

[member="Lash"]

I love the Commander handbook, especially with all the little rebel scribbles throughout!

Yup yup the Legion, Regiment, and Battalions are all Formations, anything below them are just subunits within and everything above are Commands.

For instance take the Victory MkIII for example it has transportation space for 2040 storm troopers

My approach to this is a healthy blend of the USMC, SS and Wehrmacht which the storm troopers are relatively based around in terms of design and organization.

What would be ideal is if we held an IC summit sort out planning operations and missions and the such with the Moffs and Officers of the two branches.

Lash

Done and Done A vic MK III devoted to Storm Commando Operations if needed. lol

We could do the promotion thread after the skirmishes with the rebels. maybe your boss gets killed and you take his place
