As many of you probably know, dueling is something that is near and dear to my heart. Or it would be if I had a heart.
Anyway, the feedback from my Dueling 101 blog series has been overwhelmingly positive, and I've been asking around and there seems to be a fair bit of interest in taking the concept of teaching people to duel in a more interactive setting.
Enter the Dueling Academy.
GASP!
OOOH!
AHHH!
What is the Dueling Academy, you ask? In essence, it will be a safe, controlled environment where those that wish to learn how to properly fight in an RP environment may do so. How it will play out will largely depend on how many people are interested, but the way I'm envisioning things, we'll go one of two routes.
In the optimal route, beginners will be paired off with a more experience duelist who will help walk them through the basics. The focus will be on constructing posts, correctly attacking, defending, using the Force, and so on. The lessons will go at the speed of the student, and those who excel can move onto more advanced stuff at the discretion of their instructor.
If we have too many students and not enough instructors to pull that off, we'll pair up beginners in a duel, and their match will be overseen by an instructor who will do pretty much the same thing as before, just with two folks at a time. How exactly that will shake out remains to be seen, but I imagine both students will make a post, and then then instructor will offer critique and advice. Once they've got the gist of it, the instructor will step back and let them have at it, stepping in as necessary.
So who can sign up as a student? Absolutely anyone, regardless of previous RP experience. As far as I can tell, dueling on Chaos has never been as formalized as it has been elsewhere, and that has contributed greatly to the strife that's riddled recent invasions. It doesn't matter if you've been on the board for three days or three years; if you're not confident in your dueling abilities, you're more than welcome to sign up.
I'm also on the hunt for instructors. If you believe you've got the skill and the patience to teach others to fight, send me a PM and we'll talk. Be prepared to provide links to past duels so I can make sure we're all on the same page. Variances in style are fine, but if we're gonna be teaching a base standard, it helps if we all agree on what the standard is.
My goal is for this to be a fun, pressure free environment. You may end up working with someone you don't necessarily like, or someone with a nasty reputation. At this point I can't afford to be terribly picky about the hired help, so as long as an instructor demonstrates they have the chops and can maintain a certain level of professionalism, I'm not about to turn away help. That said, if you absolutely can't stand the instructor you're working with, let me know and I'll try to shift things around. With a little luck we'll be able to avoid those sorts of problems altogether.
There's no upper limit to class size as of right now, so unless we absolutely blow the doors off this thing, I'm not going to turn anyone away. If we have too many applicants, well, we'll burn that bridge when we get to it.
If you're interested in being a student, please post below. If you're interested in being an instructor, shoot me a PM. I'd rather handle the instructor thing privately, that way if I do have to turn someone down, it'll just be between us. A list of approved instructors will be updated in this post as they get hired on.
