Interest Check: Senate Committees

We are discussing the implementation of committees in the Galactic Senate. Below is a list of committees which have been mentioned and will likely be implemented should there be sufficient interest. If a committee is not mentioned you would like to see implemented, please bring it up and tag myself to edit it into the list. If you would like to be the chairperson for a committee, please specify that you would like to chair the committee. You can sign up for more than one committee.

For further details on the committees themselves or to join the discussion, please go to this thread.

This is not a final roster. This is only to gauge the interest of active senators to determine whether the implementation of committees would be successful in the Galactic Republic. (c) indicates that person is interested in chairing said committee - more than one person is able to express interest in one committee, and senators are allowed to express interest in chairing no more than two (2) standing committees.

I'll mainly be reiterating what I've posted in another thread but I've been speaking with Flavian about leaving all the rest of the existing U.S. Senate committees open for use in RP, with the rule that a single Senate character partakes in no more than two of them. That gives us a wide variety of established committees to use in our writing, without necessarily tying us up waiting for other people to express interest in whatever it is we have going on. The ones listed here are a great core set.
At the same time, I think we should impose a limit of two committees to a character, not simply two per chairperson. This would mean that writers will rely on one another for certain things here and there; one reason I started Appropriations was to have a sort of gateway through which new endeavors had to pass. The idea was mainly to provide a single place to showcase new goals and projects; that way everyone knows what everyone else is up to and we can jump in and help each other out.

We can put up a single Appropriations Committee thread where Senators can post their objectives and means of completing them. The concept isn't necessarily to be able to tell Senators they can't do this or that, but to help refine goals and ideas so they make sense to the ideals of the Republic faction, or make sense in an RP fashion at least.
An example would be a Suravi Teigra wanting to acquire a new starship for the armed forces. She gets the information of the starship, makes an argument for its necessity, and offers a plan of offsetting its cost. She posts that in the Appropriations thread and Senators (not only those from the Appropriations Committee) can offer their insight, ideas, suggestions, etc.

And of course, if anyone tries to sneak anything through like building a clone army with chips in their brains, we can go "Ummm no." (Or "Yes," hey, who knows?) And we can also require that any new endeavors be put through that thread, so this process always has its chance to vet things.

Other committees can remain the way they've been designated here, but for ease of governing, we can default to the U.S. Senate standard on how those committees are run, what are their rules, etc. And if we want to change anything that deviates from that standard, we of course use bills to make those amendments.

Isn't Economics and Appropriations pretty redundant? Wouldn't anything commerce or economics related fall under the purview of the SAC anyways?

Also, let's keep the discussion in the other thread. I'll address your concerns there.

Oversight would be nice.

Also, although I've no intention of being placed on it, a technology/research committee does not feel like a particularly bad idea. We could use some people dedicated to the techie stuff in the Senate.

[member="Gael bar Ammon"] is this restricted to senators or can anyone in the republic do this?

If it isn't restricted then I would like to sign up for arms services and if possible my alt ([member="Sanya Val Swift"]) to deal with company contracts. Been a person who dose company stuff it's sometimes intimidating and hard to track down who to talk to for major contracts.

I would say they are restricted to senators. What would work well though is consulting, if that's something you're open to. During Senate hearings and investigations, either character could be called upon by a Senate committee for their expertise on a certain topic.

I've been thinking about restructuring the Committee on Education to a more broad category, something among the lines of a Committee on Infrastructure. Education would easily fall under the purview of this committee, and as needed for RP purposes, we could totally do subcommitees. So in infrastructure, we'd have education, technology, etc. Thoughts?

I'm not opposed to being moved to the mentioned infrastructure committee, as other senators can work in conjunction with me on their preferred infrastructural work (schools, public works, parks, laboratories, shipyards and hangars, and what have you).

I think Health and Education should be combined and titled as such.

I'd like to volunteer to Chair that committee as well; I've got experience in both fields IRL and could help facilitate RP surrounding those topics.

Education and Infrastructure are vastly different areas. My suggestion would be to separate things like infrastructure from social services like education, health care (pharmaceuticals, care), etc.

Infrastructure could fall in line with things like R&D, however, since many progressive revisions of infrastructure would require some amount of R&D.
You want to build a new road? Well you want the best road, right? So let's make sure we're building the best roads we can by checking in with R&D!
:D

Also, we should talk about what sort of economic/government model we're talking about. I always assumed a sort of democratic socialism, like found in Europe and America, with a capitalist base economy and tax-payer provided basic needs.
