A mage's training begins at Wu Shi Temple -- where they must pass an examination before an Elder Mage. Potential mages face physical challenges to prove they have the stamina and determination to complete the rigorous training at the temple. Next, they sit for a written examination. And finally, they are left to sit in meditation while the Elder Mage senses their 'core of magic' (force sensitivity).
If accepted, the applicant then officially becomes an
Aspirant Mage. These mages in training must stay within the temple walls during the completion of their basic training. In addition to their daily training, they assist with cooking and cleaning. It should be noted that aspirant mages are prohibited from drinking until they become apprentices. Then, they may follow their master's will.
After completing basic training, most mages become apprentices to another mage (journeyman or master level). This is when their skills are truly honed. Upon completion of basic training, mages are now free to leave the temple and travel with their master. Missions outside the temple give the apprentice mage the opportunity to put their magical training to use, under the watchful eye of their master.
Many Journeyman Mages (Knight) are competent in combat and spell casting. Some mages even stop training at this level and move on to other pursuits, becoming mage merchants or craftsmen. At this level, they are expected to be skilled protectors of Wu Shi Temple and Hoylin as a whole. They are trusted and respected among the mage community. They may choose to take an apprentice and continue training as well. Generally, they are addressed as 'master' by their pupil.
Master Mages possess a vast amount of knowledge and skill. They are capable of performing complex magical spells and are quite formidable in battle. Many masters will assist with training at the temple, helping to shape future generations of mages. Upon reaching this level, mages are eligible to perform the soul-shift for themselves or others in dire need. However, it is a rare skill that must be used responsibly.
