Island in the Sun

Leos smirked at her back as she walked to the water. Caked on sand was easy to wash off by comparison to the sand that always seemed to linger under your toe nails and in your shorts. He did not, in fact, look forward to dealing with that when they finally went back up to the main house. For now, however, he was content to rest upon his towel and watch her as she sank into the water. The stiff necked woman he'd grown accustomed to had genuinely melted when she allowed herself to see the joys of the world around her. A simple thing such as swimming had brought her out of her shell, and shown him that she could enjoy herself if she actually tried to do so.

"Bah!"

He crossed his arms over his chest as she made fun of him. Of course it was all in good fun. While he needed her to be uptight sometimes, he did want her to relax to. She was actually enjoyable to be around when she was laughing, calm, and not grumpy.

"Careful a crab doesn't pinch your butt."

Lifting both arms up, she bundled her hair away from the salty waves and allowed a small exhale of breath to leave her. She felt... Content. It was peaceful here, truly peaceful, as though all the wars and turmoil of the Galaxy had simply melted away into nothingness. As though the rest of its inhabitants ceased to exist. Now there would be a pleasant thought... Nobody left to threaten Leos save himself. It would make her job a hell of a lot easier.

Still, without strife there could be no progress.

"Any crab who tries would make a fine meal"

She stopped her arms, and in turn the hair, and faced him. Her skin was brilliantly sun-kissed, more so than usual, and she found herself grateful that she did not burn within its heat. A few steps had her back out of the water, no longer covered in white sand. And then she slumped against the towel, leaning back against the soft fabric.

Soon nightfall would come. With it no doubt a slight chill, and... Who knew where that would lead them. Back inside? Into the water? Wrapped in their towels?

Her eyes lifted to the sky, a moon in the distance vying for the suns attention. She had never before noticed how beautiful the sky could be.

A chuckle passed his lips at that. In this particular instance, her threat was actually kind of adorable rather than menacing. It would make a good meal, but he figured he'd be more entertained by her howling at having her butt pinched than he would be at eating the crab. Poor guy just wanted some of that nice backside! That said, he found it hard not to stare at her when she climbed out of the water like some super model on Zeltros. Don't ask how he knew about them, considering he'd never been there. No, seriously, never. Anyway, ahem, he watched as she walked over and settled against the towel he'd set up for her and then he turned his gaze to look out over the water as the last rays of light from the sun were sparkling across it.

In the distance the rising moon. Indeed, it had been a long time since he had taken the time to just enjoy his surroundings. Certainly he had moments in his library where he enjoyed a good book with the company of his Maalraas, but most of his life was spent working. Days like these were few and far between for him, which was why he'd been so insistent they take the trip. That and he wanted to see what she was like when she stopped acting so focused on her work.

"It's a nice view, isn't it?"

He wasn't looking at her, so there was no mistaking his intentions with the statement. She was a nice view, but he was more interested in the rising moon over the water. It was still a little bit too light to see the stars, but instead they got nice hues of orange and pink blending with purple as the sky began to darken. Sometimes it was interesting to wonder just how it was that light could refract so perfectly to make the sky appear to be the colors they saw. Each world was so very different thanks to the makeup of the air, and yet they all had the same affect. He rested his hands in his lap and just watched the moon as it rose. A tingle ran up his spine, but not the bad kind. He had a good feeling about this trip.

Hopefully the feeling was right.

Maelasi didn't say anything. A slight nod of her head, a tiny murmur, and little else. She sat in silence, enjoying the view for what it was as the sky turned all manner of hues and her eyes felt heavy. Oh so heavy. Her muscles felt similar, and in an odd way it seemed as though she was still moving with the waves. How odd.

Leaning back until she was laying down and the horizon was no longer her focus, she stared upward and waited for the stars to peek.

And sure enough, after what could easily have been hours, they did exactly that. The sky was covered in a thick inky blanket, punctured through with brilliant white dashes that twinkled. Maelasi sighed... She had not bothered to watch the stars since she was a child; since her potential had been discovered and she was sent away from her homeworld.

"It is beautiful" she finally whispered, mirroring his earlier expression where the sunset was concerned.

Breathtaking.

For a short while, as they waited for true darkness, he allowed his eyes to close so that he could bask in the gentle heat in solitude. It was pleasant, to say the least. He didn't have to worry about work, or the other Sith, or anything else. Maelasi was free to enjoy herself. It was peaceful, even if it was all just a glorified lie that they could only enjoy for a short time. He'd take the reprieve anytime he could get it. Especially with her around. Whether she understood it or not, her plight as a subservient warrior had settled itself upon his heart and drawn him to her. She might not be bothered by the way she lived her life, but he was, and all he wanted to do now was show her how different things could be.

When she mentioned beauty, he opened his eyes and looked up at the sky. There, above them, countless little pricks of light twirling about. Some were inside their galaxy, some were from beyond it. It was impossible to really tell which was the case with the naked eye, but they could certainly still be seen.

"Isn't it? It reminds you of how great the galaxy is. Each star has planets. Some of those planets have life. Countless species throughout our galaxy alone. It's amazing."

His hand slid across the sand between them and moved to grasp hers, provided she didn't jerk away.

"This, what we see, is what everything we do is about."
