Shaped charge warheads
Reflective Shockwaves: A result of detonation within a confined area, the effectiveness of these shockwaves depends on where the missile detonates.
Pilum: This variant is designed to create as much shrapnel as possible.
Kopis: This variant is designed to create a more precise detonation.
Weaknesses:
Countermeasures: Can be countered by other missiles, anti-missile octets and other anti-missile countermeasures. Missile can also have its onboard guidance systems jammed, causing it to either prematurely detonate or veer off course into an unintended target.
Pilum, Kopis: Both variants can still be countered in the same manner as the standard missile, via countermeasures.
DESCRIPTION
Concussion missiles are nothing new and Primo Victorian simply wanted to experiment with leftover components from their various hypervelocity and mass driver projects. What came from the series of experiments was Project Iphicrates, the Javelin-type Advanced Concussion Missile. Measuring at 1.4 meters in length and 15.2 centimeters in diameter the missile’s targets are most certainly the larger capital ships.
The missile has three main components the guidance, midbody and propulsion sections. The first of these is the guidance section which gives the missile its information on target location, allows the missile to self correct its own navigational path. An active radar homing system that allows the missile to be more accurate. This in effect makes the Javelin a fire and forget missile, once locked onto the target the missile will automatically course correct. Onboard the guidance section is a motion sensor, this is to help signal detonation - as once the missile stops moving this will signal both primary and secondary detonators, priming the second.
This leads us to the blast shield which separates the guidance and midbody sections of the missile.
A blast shield made of a tekonite and doonium/dolovite compound sits behind the guidance section and primary warhead. The primary warhead is built with an armor piercing point along with naturally fragmenting durasteel that encapsulates a high yield explosive warhead. Upon this primary detonation sequence the conflagarine-14 mixture spreads out along the impacted section of hull. This acts as a temporary sealant, while the glop mixture keeps the warhead adhered to whatever surface the midbody is now attached to. At this point the secondary detonator is already primed and is simply waiting for the onboard timer to send its electronic signal.
When the timer is up the secondary detonator ignites, the thermite laced baradium nitrate mixture. Once ignited this mixture will then ignite the plasticene thermite gel which is seated on top of the propulsion section of the missile. The final section, the propulsion section of the missile is built for a lengthy chase much in the way of the old advanced concussion missile.
A larger variant of the Javelin that comes in at 1.6 meters in length and 17.4 centimeters includes a component for ball bearings, this is known as the “Pilum.” The ball bearing component sits between the baradium nitrate and plasticene with additional layers of naturally fragmenting durasteel separating it from the baradium nitrate and the plasticene thermite gel. The warhead and its components are encased in a large depleted-baradium casing that has been folded into a durasteel, neutronium mixture.
A smaller variant of the Javelin contains an additional grappling device on the front end of the missile. This time the motion sensor at a certain distance from target will signal the device to launch. The hook is lined with corusca gems and utilizes a tensor field to counter gravitational effects. The aim of the hook is to create a deeper penetration effect of the missile, allowing for a far more effective damage output. Detonation methods works similarly with primary and secondary detonations, with kinetic impact being the key component versus the motion sensor’s detection. This variant comes in at 1 meter in length and 12.1 centimeters in diameter. It is known as the “Kopis.”
In conclusion, Project Iphicrates’s goal of finding an effective use for leftover components had been achieved. All that is left now is to determine how the warhead works in a live environment.
Note: Only one variant of the Javelin may be loaded into a ship. Please note when building your starship as to which variant of the Javelin it will utilize. Javelin, Standard. Javelin, Pilum. Javelin, Kopis. As always it is up to the opponent to determine how much damage if any they take from the missile.
