Jedi Brainstorming

So! For the first time that I can remember, the GR is existing without Jedi playing a major role in the faction. Whether that's good or bad is up to you all to decide, but it makes me a little sad, especially in how we reached this point. But that's all besides the point, other than that a lot of us here want to see the Republic make it through and thrive. There's a lot of discussion on how this should happen, but ultimately, I think the answer is to write really compelling stories- both individually and as a faction.

So, with the resurgence in Jedi characters, let's do some brainstorming for an over-arching storyline that we can work together on as Jedi to tell a story that is distinctly Jedi in nature. To start some ideas down, I think key Jedi stories involve good versus evil, Light vs. Dark, and less initial emphasis on combat, but often turns into a sweeping clash between good and evil, while remaining more mystical in nature than say, a Havoc Squad or Mandalorian story would. The goal for Jedi is usually the preservation of live through the preservation of a democratic society, but often times, to accomplish that, they are pushed beyond their capabilities and into areas of doubt and questioning before ultimately staying true to the Light and it's from there they receive their strength to overcome.

So, I have an initial idea, about a sect of Anzati Sith banished into exile and defeat by a group of Jedi during the Gulag Plague see this weakened Republic as an opportunity to strike back with a vengeance to finally and utterly destroy the Jedi. But that's just one idea that incorporates some of the elements. What makes a good Jedi story for you and what ideas do you have to start creating one?

[member="Suravi Teigra"] wants to give purpose / re-purpose the Jedi? You'll be better off reading the intro post at the least rather than listening to me.

Personally I am trying to helput or lead the Jedi to become the traditional Jedi once more. While there are many ways to be a Jedi I don't see a faction activity striving for true Jedi and following the code to the letter. As a Padawan I can only do so much, but that is my goal.

That brings up a good point that has caused more than one salt fest. What is a Jedi, especially a Jedi of the Republic? That's a entirely different discussion, but certainly one to keep in mind and strive for, since it's the image most closely associated with the Republic. That tends to draw a pretty strong group of writers as well.

The IC thread will be a great place to host discussion under the direction of one of the faction's best leading writers, Suravi. Discussion here, OOC, is every bit as important, however.

One thing we'll want to keep in mind is that while the Jedi as an idea have their own distinct identity, they are a part of the society in which they exist IC, and their writing supports the faction of the Republic as a whole OOC. Thus, the nature of this Jedi order ought to be balanced between the two.

Personally, I dislike the Jedi of the Old Republic, and the prequel era. I grew up with Luke and his budding Jedi, and prefer the types of stories explored through the small-group narrative the Expanded Universe provided. Considering the number of active writers we have, I feel this is a better structure to go on. That, and I prefer flight suits to robes. lol

The Jedi of Luke's time in the EU were more focused on the relearning and rediscovering of Jedi knowledge and wisdom, rather than the replication of its structure and hierarchy. The site itself is designed to be a reboot essentially through the events of the Gulag Plague. This is something we should take advantage of, as it gives us a reason to pursue this narrative of having to rediscover the old wisdom and knowledge of the Jedi long since passed. It also allows us to write a Jedi Order that is evolving, rather than being set in its ways and traditions. This better reflects the current state of the faction as well; the Jedi faction before left the Republic months ago. We're now an Order that is trying to find its roots, and reestablish much of what was lost. We have no grandiose Masters, no age old traditions or dogma.

As for the Jedi Code...in my experience it's best for the many different types of writers to use the Code more as a guideline than something that requires strict adherence. Forbidding attachment and other things place limitations on RP, for example. Again, writing is the focus, rather than hierarchy.

Not sure about the other peeps involved, but [member="Zaren Bouqi"] and me are gonna ICly push for a more militant movement within the Jedi Order - vaguely like the Army of Light, considering Sardun's own roots in that organization and Zaren's inspiration coming from Lord Hoth.

It's gonna get interesting for sure.

Edit In The Morning: Forgot about it, but I am also probably gonna put up a separate thread for Jedi people only, cause I know Suravi is pretty busy these days. So we can keep on pushing for that momentum.

Yes, that is a fair point, and your comments go back to what I mentioned with Jacen. What is a Jedi? I'm not sure it's something we can settle down at a concrete level and lay down the law, so to speak. Personally, I'm way more of an EU Jedi fan too, hence my Jensaarai and Tiland drawing more from the Saga of Nomi Sunrider, but there's plenty of people who want a traditional Jedi, and I think our best choice is to compromise and include everyone, especially in regards to the Code(s).

[member="Michael Sardun"]
That sounds like something that could definitely draw people in, especially with you two at the helm. I'm nostalgic for the old AoL and my time there with Veino. And a Jedi only thread sounds like a good plan. We can definitely start working with that. I think we should also leave room for lesser militant Jedi, because we can fill different roles in stories and such.

Absolutely, remaining inclusive is important. At the same time we have to maintain a certain standard of actions that the order deems unacceptable.

One issue we have encountered frequently in the passed is maintaining the IC integrity of our characters by not associating amicably with individuals who have committed heinous acts and are of ill repute, while not simultaneously alienating writers OOC who play those sorts of characters.
This can easily be remedied by always having a role for "dark" characters to play in our stories that makes sense IC for the rest of us. That way we don't have to say "No" to anyone. :)

Yes, that is definitely a fair point and a Jedi Code of Conduct wouldn't be a bad idea, especially if we do it ICly and enforce it ICly. The trials going on in the SSC and Mandalorian clans concerning Gray Raxis both come to mind. Those are some very interesting storylines with good RP that add to the faction's strength in an IC manner.

So that's probably something we can work out at a later date once our stories are up and going.

Hi.

I'm not a Jedi, but I've decided to change that. After reading through this thread, I've realized that the one thing on this entire site I've yet to do is be a jedi.

Now I know, you're looking at that Mando tag and thinking to yourself, 'Why is this guy even here? Isn't there a salt field between us?' Probably. But that's not why I'm here. After talking with [member="Lady Kay"] I learned I wanted to help the Republic in any way I could. What I can do best right now is help with this new idea for the Jedi (or old).

So basically, [member="Tiland Kortun"] , [member="Ali Hadrix"] , [member="Michael Sardun"] , [member="Zaren Bouqi"] , what can I do to help you guys?

Sweet, good to have you, [member="Krest"]! What we really need now is some thread plots, especially for the Jedi. I tossed up an idea for a sect of Anzati dark Jedi driven away into exile two centuries ago that see the weakened aspect of the Republic and Jedi and take the time to strike for revenge.

Or, with the Omega event starting up, we may want to get our characters in line and trained to prepare for that.

I think one thing that's important to point out is that the Jedi really aren't infallible. Some fall to darkness. Personally I intend that for this character but its something I think that could use some exploration as well as redemption stories. I find them to be very dramatic and often memorable.

Fighting against darksiders is the number one thing I see Jedi doing. Its simply what they exist to do, whether others outside the order understand that or not.

So, what if there was a training exercise interrupted by these Anzati? They take their shot while everyone is relaxed and learning, leading into a larger feud as the remaining Jedi of the Republic try to prevent any more attacks.

[member="Lady Kay"] , how do you feel about eventually becoming a target? I could even bring [member="Darth Ferus"] as a sort of BBG running things from the background.

[member="Dax Fyre"]

I have seen many falls and redemptions, and most of them were memorable. If that is your goal, remember that no two people are alike. Dont think you have to do the traditional fall. Make it unique, personal.

In the mean time we can still do something. no reason to just sit around. Make a story that wouldn't be affected, or have it affect the story and roll with it.

[member="Lady Kay"]

No no. The bad guys. Jedi would help defend you from Ferus and his goons.

Ahhh...gotcha ;) No problem either way.

And I do appreciate the bunch of you pulling together. It just goes to show your determination as writers.

Another day of work, so posting time is limited. Maybe if I won the lottery....I wouldn't have this problem....lol
