Sniffing and wiping frantically at the tears flooding from her dark eyes, Miri tried to maintain some level of control over her emotions, even if she could feel her grasp of the situation slipping fast. She wanted to be happy, joyful, excited—and she was all of these things, and so much more. But she was afraid.
“
It wasn’t supposed to happen yet,” she whispered. “
Not now…”
Starlin, who had been contemplating excusing himself from the cockpit of his own ship just to give the couple some privacy, perked up. “
I think I’m missing something here,” he said. “
Haven’t you always wanted to be a mother? I remember you used to carry around baby dolls everywhere when you were a kid, like a little mama. So what’s wrong?” Surely she wasn’t just upset at the prospect of walking down the aisle with a visibly pregnant belly, though he imagined it might limit her wedding dress options. Maybe they could postpone it until after she gave birth…?
“
Sahar is what’s wrong,” Miri said. “
We did all this just to attract her attention, so that we could take her out. But if I’m pregnant, I can’t fight her—and I don’t want you to fight her alone again!” She gripped Kyell’s hands tightly, just as fiercely protective of him as he was of her. But she had to think about this new other life now, too. One that was tied to hers.
“
I could fight her for you,” Starlin offered, his tone deceptively casual.
Miri turned to look at him. “
Would you really?”
The hope in her expression was too much for him to refuse. Not that he would have denied her anything anyway. “
Yup,” he replied. “
I’ll kick her ass from here to Bardotta, I don’t care. She’ll wish she had never met y’all.”
Reaching over, Miri hugged him. “
Thank you, Starlin,” she said. Her relief was palpable. If Starlin fought Sahar in her place, this may have actually turned out for the better. A powerful and experienced Jedi Knight, Starlin would fare much better in battle than she ever could.
More moved than he would ever admit, Starlin returned her embrace until Miri pulled away from him to throw her arms around Kyell. The joy finally was able to break through the melting fear then, flowing out of her in an exuberant rush like water bursting through ice in spring. She wanted to dance and cheer and jump up and down in celebration.
<
Yes,> she replied, smiling against his neck. <
It is amazing. I only wish I could sense it the way you can. How did we do it?> An apt question. They had been using protection, so how had this child even been conceived? On the other hand, did it really matter?
<
It’s going to be all right now,> she echoed his sentiment. <
I trust Starlin, and I trust you. You won't need to worry about me.>
As she began to kiss his face ardently, Starlin quickly turned his chair around. "
You know, you guys get to have your own room to yourselves..." he hinted, turning up his music again.
Miri paused, reminded that they weren’t alone, but took full advantage of the privacy of telepathy. <
I've got to get this armor off anyway,> she whispered in Kyell's mind. <
Come with me, beloved…>
