Karren's Lightsaber Workshop #1 (SJO/All Jedi)

Talis slowly began to look around spotting [member="Calder Icehammer"] Talis liked Calder, He seemed like a good person, Talis slowly surveyed the group of Youngling's and Jedi before walking off, His boot's slid across the marble floor of the teaching area.

Soon the Zabrak Jedi had made himself over to Calder, Talis only met half of Calder's height. The Zabrak chuckled at himself before speaking up to the burly Jedi with a smile.

"Calder how have you been doing?" Talis asked a smile painted upon his face. He continued to wait for Calder's response.

[member="Nia Sol"]

"That's a decent answer, but it reeks of the by the book mentality. Give me an example of a grey area where you would be hesitant to draw your weapon. Dig deeper. Really get into it."

She turned her attention to the others.

[member="Soryn Solimar"]

Soryn was a bit of an enigma, keeping to himself. She guessed he had a rough past, or just a hard time getting along with others.

"Please elaborate sir. Again a very bland book answer. How can one wield the blade effectively if we have no more a code of honor or understanding and respect of its power than a Sith?"

[member="Calder Icehammer"]

The new polar bear showed up. She liked him already. Big, rugged, carrying a hammer that could crush a bantha. She smiled, imagining he had no need for a saber, but the philosophy behind a Jedi and their relationship with their primary weapon would not be a lost cause for him.

"Care to comment or add friend?"

Gherron stood outside the small classroom, merely observing the back and forth lecture between the Jedi. Though he didn't bear the title of Jedi anymore, he was still a friend to most. That alone had helped him out on his way in, as a few walking around recognized him, if barely. It had been some time since he'd even been around this many of the order, and in fact his first time seeing actual Silver Jedi. He'd heard of the sect before, but never looked into it... Eventually, he would find himself silently stepping into the classroom, finding himself a seat in the back. He would keep his head on a loose swivel then, his ears and eyes open in observation. Why was he even here? Well, that was simple. A good friend of his, still in the order, had inspired something in himself. That inspiration, coupled with his family's recent trip back to the icy caves of Ilum drove him to finally take on making a new lightsaber. Except, he was pretty rusty on the whole process, and needed a refresher.

[member="Talis Palecrest"] would find the large bear smiling warmly at him as he approached, or something close to a smile. "I have been doing well my friend. It is good to see you." It was a welcome sight to see someone familiar in a room full of strangers, one of which who also approached him. His icy blue gaze would travel down to [member="Karren Trask"] . He hadn't been able to find an answer since returning from the Netherworld, and his mind was often filled with turmoil.

"Is it ever correct to take a life? My people lived in peace for hundreds of years after we were kicked from our homes by the same people we share our planet with. Even as our population dwindled we did not seek revenge or hate our neighbors. Yet I have killed to defend the children of my village. I watched as a being of death, a Sith as you have said, burned my planet while I was helplessly watching." The smile faded and Calder's grip on his hammer tightened. "Even now I feel anger and hate. That Sith is a man I want to kill, and no matter how wrong I know it should be it feels right to want his death. To kill him would protect countless more worlds, but does that justify my want for revenge?"

[member="Gherron Vael"]

As Gherron entered she gave him a slight nod, as if toinvite him to join the conversation.

[member="Calder Icehammer"]

The bear spoke and she nodded again, a smile curling her lips. Now they were getting into it. The deeper meaning of what loyalty and protecting your own meant.

"That my dear friend is something we all must come to terms with. You raise an excellent point. Killing and taking life is a serious thing and should be used as a last resort. As Calder's testimony has brought up, when is it ok to kill? What if anything would you consider to be the last resort? We have the Jedi Code of course, but it cannot encompass everything.

You must ask yourselves these kinds of questions, in order to be a just and fair Jedi. In order to wield your badge of office, with clarity and the true common good at heart."

As the bear spoke, Gherron found himself leaning in, moved by the story. He had once faced an enemy that he hated with all of his being. Another Sith, one who had seemed to thrive on fear and chaos, just like Calder had described. He had let himself go over the edge then, letting his foe get inside his head nearly every time, but in the end, he came to terms with himself. He knew now that, were he to see that man again, the encounter would be so much different. After this moment of contemplation, he chose to stand up and make his way farther into the room.

"Often times we have feelings that leave us conflicted, not knowing which path is right. Even though we strive to live by a certain code, it's still very easy to stray away from that. When that moment comes, and you find yourself wanting to stray from what you know and believe is right, find an anchor. It can be anything. A loved one, your home, or even a certain feeling. If you hold onto that anchor hard enough though, you will find yourself rarely ever losing yourself to hate and vengeance. Take it from someone who's been down that road quite a bit."

[member="Karren Trask"] [member="Calder Icehammer"]

"But," Calder turned his head to [member="Gherron Vael"] , his eyes almost seeming sad. "My people are my anchor. When they fell to danger hate and anger filled my mind. This anchor to keep you calm and focused will do nothing if it is the thing being threatened. It is a double edged sword and a torturous path to walk if you are not prepared." His head swiveled back to [member="Karren Trask"] , nodding once. "I have killed to defend the young of my people, and it is not an action I regret. To kill to defend those who cannot while there is no other choice is just in my mind. But to kill in anger or revenge, that is wrong."

Sorryn looked at [member="Karren Trask"] for a long moment before he responded.

"Is it really? Is it any more of a bland book answer than the questions themselves?"

He paused.

"The when and why of using a weapon any weapon has no baring whatsoever on the effectiveness of the weapon in that person's hands. Furthermore a weapon regardless of power holds no responsibility. Weapons are lifeless, soulless physical objects. The responsibility lies in the holder or wielder of a weapon."

Soryn paused scanning the crowd.

"I am sorry I didn't catch you name.........you may call me Soryn. Lightsaber assembly is not philosophical. There is a correct and incorrect way to assemble one if you wish to achieve a desirable outcome in it's assembly. It appears to me in your opening speech that you confused philosophy with history. Sure their use has roots in philosophy......in as the debate on which form is more appropriate to which opponent and what form they are using. However except for one or two exceptions the form one chooses in not directly linked to how the lightsaber is constructed."

Soryn took a small breath.

"Which brings me to the answer to the first two questions. The use of a weapon is not objective as it seems you would insinuate for this lesson. There is no philosophical or universal application that can be applied to every instance. Each encounter outside the walls of a Temple, Academy, or even specifically an individual classroom is subjective. each encounter is different. To attempt to apply a universal code or law to every encounter is ill advised at best and idiotic at worst."

Soryn paused.

"Such things are at least in my experience most often debated, and debated quite frequently, by Councils of Masters and not by a single individual."

. "I have killed to defend the young of my people, and it is not an action I regret. To kill to defend those who cannot while there is no other choice is just in my mind. But to kill in anger or revenge, that is wrong." Talis heard from his Bear friend.

Talis continued to listen onto [member="Calder Icehammer"] A smile was painted across his face as he listened. He continued to listen onto the current topic that was at hand, many people chiming in on the such conversation. Talis continued to listen onto his current friend's not wanting to really put a input and such, Not really having one either, He just felt rather unneeded in the current conversation.

"An excellent debate. I'm inclined personally to go with Master Vael and Mister Ice hammers answers. This is based on my personal interpretation of the Jedi Code, though I do adhere to a more strict and rigid interpretation. No two answers are the same and neither are they inherently wrong.

As Jedi we must remember we are a rare breed. There are many of us, but there are even more that harness the Darkside."

She ignored the anger in Soryns voice, but did shoot him a concerned look.

"Now on to the second part. The components of a lightsaber. Your typical Lightsaber consists of a Focusing Crystal, Augmenting Crystals, A focusing lens, a Hilt, Circuits, a power cell, and sometimes custom tweaks. For the younglings, you will be constructing a basic saber today. for our seniors, you will have more choice of parts.

Now each of these components add's a different feature or ability to the saber. For instance certain circuitry allows a Saber not be shorted out when it encounters Cortosis. Some circuitry allows your saber to work and ignite under water. There are many crystals too. Here's a basic chart of them

The New Non-Essential Guide to Lightsaber Crystals

These will perhaps be your most important item in your Saber. Which crystal did you choose? Why?

Also remember as we construct and discuss, to build your Saber to your own Light Saber form. The blade is simply an extension of the body."

The fact that not only did their would be instructor fail to answer the question of who she is but also failed to address the further details of his answer did not escape him. He found it rather amusing and predicable of more mainstream Jedi. You challenge the foundation of their belief system and one or two things happens. Either they lash out or they clam up. Seeing as how they were in a crowd of people clamming was the only option that would not destroy her credibility in front of the class.

So much for the philosophy lesson. Which mean now Soryn would have to be bored. Seeing as how he had already created a Lightsaber for himself back in the Temple on his home world. So as the instructor talked Soryn stood off to the side. Stood like a statue giving no response to what was going on around him.

Instead he just listened to the various people around him speak. Catching bits and pieces of what was said.

"It is wise to challenge all forms of knowledge." Calder didn't have to be a Beorni to feel the annoyance coming from [member="Soryn Solimar"] . He would swivel his head around to the young man, gazing him over. "There is no rule that will fit all situations, but there is one that will cover most. To have a core ideal will help keep your mind clear when situations that cannot be predicted arise. To wield a weapon however has simple rules. Hold the hilt, hit your foes with the blade, don't hit yourself. But to use a weapon as a Jedi, a defender of the weak, is different. Your sword that you are to make, the hammer in my hand," The large being paused long enough to hold up the frozen weapon.

"Can kill. As it has already been said to take a life is a step no one should have to take. My hammer that could easily crush bodies can do the same to blasters. The ice from it I could use to freeze a slaver in his tracts to be arrested rather than bash open his skull. A lightsaber is a weapon of unimaginable power and strength. Few things can withstand it's burn, and fewer can survive being pierced by it."

The Icehammer was lowered as he stepped right over to the young Padawan, crouching before him so they could be on eye level. "I met a Jedi in the bowels of the hell you would know as the Netherworld. Where the spirits," He paused. "The Force was silent. He helped my people who were trapped in this terrible place protect our young and each other without asking anything in return. He wielded his lightsaber as a shield, and died protecting us. I have seen Sith who would have slaughtered all of my people as soon as they had found us simply because we were there with the same weapon. You say the weapon itself holds no responsibility, but the lightsaber is just part of a weapon. The Jedi, the Sith. They are beings made weapon, just one is a shield while the other a sword."

Calder would stand and go back to his side of the room where he would once again go back to observing and learning, but not before asking Soryn one last question.

"Instead of dismantling the lesson, ask yourself. Are you the shield? Or are you the sword?"

Since he had last spoken, Gherron had taken to finding a seat just behind the rest of the class, and took to observing rather than speaking for a turn. As he listened, he heard many opinions and thoughts fly back and forth, when once again, the bear surprised him with his words of wisdom. At the mention of the Netherworld, he shivered involuntarily. He hadn't been back to that wretched place since he escaped so long ago. Like Calder had said himself, it was a living hell. However, he surprised Gherron just the same. It brought along a single thought: Just because one has the title of padawan, doesn't mean they have nothing to say, and on the flipside, even masters still have much to learn. If Calder yet had a master, Gherron imagined he'd be very proud of their student.

Soryn made no inclination of moving or speaking as the bear crouched in front of him. It was only after the bear moved away that Soryn spoke.

"I am confused. I thought our nameless instructor was teaching lightsaber construction not how to wield one? The two things have little to do with each other."

Soryn dared to give a little smirk.

"Dismantling the lesson? I answered a question asked and explained my answer when prompted to do so. Both at the request of the person leading the lesson. If such a thing serves to dismantle a lesson perhaps it is a flaw in the lesson?"

Soryn paused scanning the entire group.

"Since apparently the lesson is already dismantled I may as well go all out. Let me pose a hypothetical scenario to the class to answer yet another question posed. Can it not be both shield and sword.

You are out in the Galaxy doing the good work of the glorious Jedi. You come across a small child being assaulted by an evil doer. Doesn't have to be Sith but it could be. You jump in front of the Jedi your evil lightsaber with it's own thoughts and feelings and capable of responsibility ignited to fend off any future attacks aimed at the child. You are in effect a shield. The attacker hesitates so you implore him to cease his attacks. In that moment you are no longer a shield but a negotiator. Ok so say the attacker refuses or Force forbids seeks out other undefended targets making the only option to go on the offensive. So you stop the attacker with Force. Either by disarmament, dismemberment, or death. Are not then the sword?"

Soryn paused letting his hypothetical scenario linger for a moment.

"Is the lightsaber responsible for defending that helpless child or are you. Is the lightsaber responsible for the death of that attacker or are you? I would like to think we are responsible for our actions not the tools we choose to wield in the course of those actions. I pose the question directed at me to all of you? Are you the shield or the sword? Me..........I like to thing each and everyone of us is both shield and sword. We are the shield when called on to be and we are also the sword when called to be. We are however much more than that. We are Guardians, Negotiators, advisers, teachers, and students."

Jue Yaun slowly walked into the lesson at hand, his hands clasping each wrist underneath his worn white robe. He carefully listened to the words of Padawan Soryn and dissecting the hypothetical question inside his own mind. He himself was a new comer to the order, a fresh student of the force recruited off the world of Jedha. Jue was well taught in the philosophy of the force, through the teachings he had been indoctrinated through his mentor ship in the ways of whills. Though he had spent his life thus far on the path of the force, this was the first steps he had taken with the Jedi. He was a student, always a student. His mind ready for the intake of knowledge and higher learning and his soul and body ready for the challenges that lay ahead.

The question was hypothetical and open to interpretation. The question was relayed to all those that could hear Soryn's words and hear them Jue had. Fresh to the world and to the temple, some would think it be wise just to sit there and listen, take in everything before offering voice. That was not Jue's style, he was a preacher back home and words he loved to share. He loved discussions and debate and here laid the opportunity to have such.

"Answer can be complex or as straight forwards as the individual wants to make it" The monk's low, soft and humble voice broke the void as he placed himself into the discussion. "For me, it is simple. You are what you need to be in the situation that has been placed in your path."

[member="Jue Yaun"]

She nodded to Jue Yaun as he entered. then she glanced down at her own parts. The bickering of Soryn was not lost on her, but she didn't care. she was here to teach, not to argue philosophy. then she snapped and looked up piercing him with a glare and finally losing her temper.

"I'm sorry. Were you here to teach? I'll stand aside and let you force your ideas down others throats if you like. There is no concrete right answer friend. However if you are quite finished, as we have moved past the Philosophy section, I'd like to focus on the task at hand. Lightsaber construction, in the physical."

She nodded to Calder and then turned her eyes back to the class.

"Again, tell me about your crystal choice, and why?"

[member="Gherron Vael"] [member="Talis Palecrest"] [member="Soryn Solimar"] [member="Calder Icehammer"] [member="Honoko"] [member="Nia Sol"]

Soryn just looked at [member="Karren Trask"] as if she had lost he mind. It made no logical sense for someone who interjected philosophy into a lesson that didn't involve philosophy at all to then ignore and become angered at the philosophical points provided. It was also mildly entertaining that she would single him out but not the originator of the current round of discussion. He gathered if you agreed with the teacher you could spout off whatever you wanted.

"Such anger and lack of patience. Does not such discussions lead to the acquisition of knowledge in pursuit of wisdom? It's a wonder how you made it to Master to begin with. Is not such things the path to the dark side?"

Soryn would gaze at Karen only for another moment before turning around and making his way towards the door. Not that he needed to rehash the topic of the class to begin with but simply because of the lack of control and structure to lesson itself. He had experience all he needed experience in this place. To stay any longer was a waste of time.

Nia could sense the tension in the room. "Maybe I should do this somewhere more, calm."

"I'm sorry but I must take my leave." Nia gave a quick bow as she jogged up the stairs passed Yaun on the way out.

Rajah walked into the room, having heard commotion from nearby about a lightsaber training session and being unable to resist going to it to watch at least.
