Kylo Ren's Lightsaber

I was watching the Force Awakens for the second time today, and started to think about something I noticed the first time around - the lightsaber of Kylo Ren. If you notice, the blade sparks and spits more than the usual lightsaber. Could this be the result of an unstable crystal? Or poor design? In the Force Unleashed, I remember seeing lightsabers like that - it may just be a different type of crystal than the one typically used.

What do you think?

The kyber crystal in Kylo Ren's lightsaber is cracked, and thus it produces a rather unstable looking beam that parallels perfectly with his unstable mentality. The crossguards are actually vents that discharge excess energy given off by the cracked crystal so the whole thing doesn't explode whenever its turned on. The design of the hilt itself is a crude throwback to an ancient design dated back to the Great Scourge of Malachor.

Sadly the weapon was destroyed in the big fight between Kylo and Rey.

*hides her saber*

It is a cool one and well it seemed at first like a crossguard saber before you saw it in the movie. Still if you wanted to make one like it, crossguards are the way to go for the fun of it and instead of it being vented you can control them activating.

Nice find - I love how he has an "accusing finger". :)

The design is great, and proving as effective yet volatile and eager to better everything and everyone than Kylo himself is. Cracked cell; cracked mind.

Not at all, [member="Seraphina Shel'tah"]

The faint mention of a Legends planet in Canon does not warrant the entire inclusion of its Legends history and character involved with it.

They may or may not decide to expand on this new canon piece, or they might not.

I wasn't saying that, I just meant that seeing the information shown there, them referencing the source of that material that in the very least his persona and that planet were retained, no? Which could potentially also explain partially why Kylo's mask is shaped the way it is.

Just a theory...

While it doesn't mean KOTOR and the like are still canon, it is important to remember that Knights of the Old Republic, The Old Republic, etc are... kind of what kept the Star Wars line afloat for a long while.

They are massively popular entries, one of which is still generating tens of millions of dollars in revenue every single year. They are loved by fans, both hardcore and casual. Disney isn't going to come out and say 'this is all dumb and non-canon' about it explicitly.

Another fact is that the whole Legends designation was explicitly put up to make it so the movies could not step on any toes - it made it so there were no novels to retcon, no comics to step on the toes of, etc. KOTOR will likely never come up in that regard, because it was explicitly placed in the far past so that it couldn't conflict with the movies and what not.
