Description: Blith Tech engineers identified an unfilled niche in the Dominions naval fleets, which was the niche of a long range heavily damaging vessel, that was designed to sit outside of normal engagement ranges and throw heavily damaging beams at enemy vessels. Blith-Tech brought this up with The Dominion's Navy, who began an inquiry with the various companies of the galaxy to find a vessel of such a type. Blith-Tech developed and presented an early version of the Lancer to this inquiry, and won out the contract. The ship went through quite a few iterations, but they eventually settled on a ship built around an extremely powerful proton beam cannon, but fitting such a large cannon to the ship left a few large design problems.
One major design challenge was fitting a reactor big enough to power the beam cannon while allowing the ship to orient properly while firing, they eventually found the right reactor, but the reactor takes up most of the room, leaving an extremely small space for the crew, leaving the ship with an exceptionally small crew for its size. The crew space is rather cramped, and is usually used as a starting assignment for new navy members, as the ships get people used to cramped spaces and it also minimizes risk as the ship is usually far out of combat.
The ship also has cooling problems after firing, and the ship requires an extensive cooling period to give off the massive heat that the gun produces when it fires. It requires an extensive and complex cooling network that is prone to failure and technical problems. This means that the ship has to cool down for an extensive period after firing, which can cause many problems during battle, especially if if comes under assault by star fighters or corvettes.
The ship also has an extremely small and weak main engine, as space constraints prevented a bigger engine, this causes the ship to be extremely slow, and most smaller ships can easily out run it, which is why the ship must remain at an extreme range, as any smaller ships can outrun it, and the weak armor and no point defense leaves the ship extremely weak to star fighters, which means the Lancer is easy to deal with if there is no defense is put around it.
