OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Planet Name: Madrus
  • Demonym: The Madrugar
  • Region: Wild Space
  • System Name: Drugar
  • System Features: A habitable geothermically active high-gravity world orbiting a red star. Has a single moon. An asteroid belt rings the system.
  • Location: In Irith's Hex
  • Major Imports: Rare metals not found locally. Luxury Foodstuffs.
  • Major Exports: Metals and Minerals, Cybernetics, Weapons, Starships
  • Unexploited Resources: A large quantity of radioactive ores, common metals, and more geothermal energy than you can shake a stick at.
GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION
  • Gravity: 1.2 times standard
  • Climate: Volcanically active desert with limited saltwater seas and freshwater springs.
  • Primary Terrain: Mountains and valleys
  • Atmosphere: Type I in most areas, Type II near volcanic fissures
LOCATION INFORMATION
  • Capital City: Ubrecht, a mega-city with a thin surface presence and a subterranean foundation that sinks 1000 meters into the crust, with over 200 levels of habitation, manufactories, and markets.
  • Planetary Features: Dry Mountains and Valleys interspersed with volcanic fissures, salt seas, and freshwater hot springs. Several Mega-Cities dot the landscape, with roots deep underground. Geothermal reactors are found near volcanic fissures, taking advantage of the natural heat to produce more energy than the species' needs for its own consumption.
  • Major Locations:
  • On the planet Drugar, the capital city is Ubrecht, a mega-city with a thin surface presence and a subterranean foundation that sinks 1000 meters into the crust, with over 200 levels of habitation, manufactories, and markets.
  • A popular tourist destination is the Galaean Canyon, a deep canyon on the surface of the world about 500 miles from Ubrecht city. The Canyon descends all the way through the planet's mantle, 2,900 kilometers at its deepest point, and has a river of magma running through much of its 10,000 kilometer length. Were it not for the high gravity of the world, the magma might erupt and cause catastrophic damage to surface facilities. But the unique geosphere of Drugar prevents a tragic volcanic eruption. Many geothermal power stations are located along the walls of the Galaean canyon, along with hotels for tourists which have vast quantities of balconies and windows that provide majestic views of the Canyon interior.
  • The largest body of water on Drugar is the Ruby Sea, a very salty and mineral-rich body of water 5,000 kilometers across, where the Ruby Salt Fish and Scarlet Algae are the only two life-forms to thrive. The Algae survives by consuming the minerals of the water through a process of photosynthesis, while the Ruby Salt Fish consumes the algae. The Ruby Salt Fish and the Scarlet Algae are two of the last remaining native animal and plant species to survive on Drugar, and there are industrial waste and fishing restrictions to maintain the population of these species. The water of the sea is constantly replenished by underground hot springs. The Ruby Sea is not the only body of water fed by underground springs, but it is the largest and the only one with surviving native flora and fauna.
  • The planet of Drugar has a single moon, Demisol, which has been hollowed out and transformed into a vast orbital manufactory. There are no other planets in the system, however an asteroid ring at the outskirts of the system suggests that there was once another world that got pulled apart by gravitational stresses. The mineral-rich asteroids of the outer ring contain a plethora of minerals that can't be lifted from the local star, and provide employment for countless Laborers of the mining Clans.
  • In their short time as a spacefaring culture, the Madrugar have achieved some impressive feats. They have constructed a megastructure known as a 'Starlifter' around the Drugar star, which maintains an orbit 180 degrees in opposition to the orbit of their homeworld, Madrus. This Starlifter uses powerful tractor and repulsor technology, in conjunction with thermal shielding, to lift useful elements directly from the star and into refining facilities. This allows the Madrugar to mine incredible quantities of Carbon, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Silicon, Magnesium, Neon, Iron, Sulfur, and Nickel. In turn, these materials are further combined into useful alloys and composites to provide for the species' large manufacturing capacity- which exceeds what a single-system society might otherwise be capable of.

POPULATION
  • Native Species: Madrugar
  • Immigrated Species: Mostly homogenous society with some visiting traders or tourists.
  • Population: 6 Billion on world, an additional 1 Billion on the moon, with some millions occupying the Starlifter and Asteroid Belt
  • Demographics: Primarily native population with a sparse number of diverse species visiting on occasion for reasons of commerce or leisure.
  • Primary Languages: Madrugari, a gutteral and hard consonant variety of Galactic Standard
  • Culture: Madrugar are proud, sometimes to their detriment. They hold Warriors, Laborers, and Builders to be pursuing the highest endeavors, and so divide their species among these three major categories of occupation. Loyalty is to one's clan first, then to one's world, and finally to one's self. They have a sense of having been left behind by the galaxy, and believe it is their destiny to reclaim their place in the stars.
GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY
  • Government: Led by a Prime Executive who oversees a Council of Clans derived from each of the three major clan castes. Clan representatives are selected by the members of each Clan, usually favoring the eldest, most experienced, or most accomplished members.
  • Affiliation: Unaffiliated at the time of this writing.
  • Wealth: Medium - a single system society, but with excellent resources and industry
  • Stability: High - the species' sense of manifest destiny sees them usually working together for the betterment of the world.
  • Freedom & Oppression: Mostly free, with societal norms set by shaming rather than legislation in most cases.
MILITARY & TECHNOLOGY
  • Military: A strong military for a single-system species, consisting of over 100 warships and 1 Billion military personnel (the Warrior clans.)
  • Technology: Comparable to galactic standard, with some specialty in cybernetics, repulsor/tractor technology, thermal shielding, metallurgy, and geothermal energy.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The Madrugar are a species of near-humans who diverged from normal humanity some 25,000 years ago, living on an isolated colony on Madrus in the Drugar system. It is believed the colony was established by refugees from an ancient galactic conflict, but the precise nature of the threat which drove them to their world is unclear in the historical record. Having a gravity 20% higher than that of human standard worlds, the humans who colonized the planet became squat and strong, developing the physiological traits of short stature, broad muscled bodies, and dense bones that they have today. Routine replacement of failing organs with cybernetic parts, and the development of regenerative cerebrospinal fluid injections, has extended the Madrugar lifespan to over 150 years on the average.

Records show that the Madrugar were impoverished when they arrived on Madrus, and disassembled their spacecraft to provide needed shelter and materials. They were forced to be creative and crafty to survive. Strong family units were formed for mutual support and competition against other refugee populations. This developed their culture into a Clan-based society that valued builders, laborers, and warriors above all.

Leaving the surface of Madrus was a difficult prospect due to the higher gravity of the planet, and may never have been attempted were it not for cultural traditions and histories that insisted the people of Madrus had originated from the stars. For this reason, spacefaring technology was doggedly pursued by them as a means to reclaim their lost heritage and seize the destiny that had been taken from them during their flight to this world. Finally, 2,000 years ago, the Madrugar re-discovered spaceflight, and 100 years ago, they re-discovered hyperspace travel.

Cultural Addendum

The Madrugar are ruled by the three primary Clan types – Warriors, Builders, and Laborers, with a ruling council comprised of representatives selected by their Clans. These Clan chieftans that elect one of their number as the Prime Executive. The Prime Executive has ultimate authority in Madrugar society, although their decisions can be overruled and their position overthrown if a 2/3rd majority of the council deems it so. It is possible for a member of Madrugar society to renounce their clan and apply to join a different clan, but this is rarely done and carries a certain amount of social stigma.

Prohibited Automation and Droids: While machines and cyberware are staples of Madrugar society, droids and thinking machines are a contentious issue. The danger of Labor being performed by automated devices was perceived by the Laborer class who managed to outlaw droid labor. As such, no technology which can perform tasks outside of the supervision of a living operator is permitted in Madrugar society. Automated defense systems which can defend a vessel or installation without a living operator are similarly prohibited. As are advanced autopilot systems that can take off, pilot a vessel all the way to a destination, and land without a living pilot. Only limited automation that needs regular supervision from living operators are permitted. The closest thing to full automation permitted by Madrugar society are Hybroids, which are members of any Clan type who have received extensive cybernetic enhancement, allowing them to compute as well as droids, or to operate machines with more efficiency than an unmodified Madrugar could, while often remaining on duty for long shifts without breaks.
