HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The theme park began as most do: a means for escape. If the denizens of any planet could ever want for such a thing, it would be those of Maena. Inhabiting a molten world of often vagarious temperament, the feeling of distrust for one’s own home only grew as cultural corruption took hold. Ravaged by the misfortune of the Gulag Plague, malaise only bolstered as those with power sought to take advantage of a crippled society. In the outer ripples of a plethora of events, leading most to posit some form of curse or snakebitten fate, Mr. Aidrano descended upon New City with distinct hopes and aspirations. Success and fortune, on the backs of others.
And while he constructed this place from his own blood and sweat, the Carneval would only stay within his possession for so long, fated for other purposes at the hands of the Equalizers. And as they arrived on the planet, originally aimed towards more amicable accords, the theme park was renewed and repurposed as it slipped into their grasp.
The construction of the theme park takes on the appearance of an off-center circle, favoring the Eastern District where store keeps and shadowy vendors make their way. Of course, they hardly look nefarious, but one might catch the scent of rot as they meander through the mercantile labyrinth. Walls of duracrete married with obsidian outcroppings, the tones are naturally dark yet well-lit with neo signage and extravagant spiraling displays. A jewelcrafter might display their wares in gleaming glass cases, noted by a spinning artificial diamond held high upon a beam of electrum. Explosions can be heard in the distance as a pseudo-alchemist parades his talents and wares through vibrant demonstrations and miniatures fireworks, peppering the night sky with purples and greens. Anything and more can be found in the Eastern District, so long as one knows where to look.
To the West, the ground rumbles with quakes from newfangled amusement rides. Roller coasters skirt across polished rails of turadium as the screams and wails of the riders can be heard like a passing siren. Giant Ferris Wheels nearly scrape the overhanging roof of the volcanic walls, spinning slowly with wambling buckets of painted tin. Children, scruffy and greased with barely a pittance to their names, favor these rides in particular for their low cost and longevity. Beneath the rides, tents of lilac and crimson white hide away the more hedonistic components of the Carneval. While the cost is high and the flashing blackened incandescent signs indicate adults only – though what, really, is an ‘adult’ on Maena? – the tattered canvas of the tents is frayed for just the right gaping hole, advantage often taken by the more imaginative rats of the society.
To the South, one must have a special pass. Gates of wrought iron extend upwards, like twisting spires, and join with electric arcs of blue that buzz in the night air. Upon passage, the debase and most hefty of sins becomes easily accessible. Pit fights, human trafficking, and other increasingly lewd and ribald enterprises. While no one asks the question of where these people come from or from where their origin lie, one might find that they catch the fleeting whimsy of familiarity. Was that the street urchin that was working on the 245 level just this passing day? Was that the bookie who was taking wagers on the rancor pit fights in the top levels? Though it is never openly stated, slaves and pit fighters are populated with an assortment of residents. Those looking to make their way out of the slums, members of rival gangs who failed to comply with the peace talks, or the random erudite who spoke off-tone to a member of the Equalizers. Much in the way of the Coruscant Flower and Funeral Company of old, in the Southern district – anything is possible when the proper backs are scratched.
The Northern district is reserved for maintaining and overseeing the theme park. Low lying buildings of uniform development sprawl about, housing security measures and other necessities for ride maintenance and customer satisfaction. Bookkeepers and accountants are kept here, along with research and development teams who were fashioned from the more scrupulous and capable. Their primary task is, of course, to improve the profit margins. Security is largely comprised of members of the Maena policing groups, though laden with the more venal constituents with proclivities towards moonlighting. And from the center of this complex, a large tower extends upwards and overlooks the entire theme park. Crafted of durasteel plating and thick panes of tinted glass, the tower stands as mysterious sentry for all processes that occur within the theme park. It is here, that should the Equalizers decide to tend to the Carneval, they congregate most often.
