When the Forceborn survivors of the Confederacy's Fall found the Expanse, they saw only suffering. Slavers and raiders beset all who attempted to settle. Yet, the worst affliction were the deadly monstrosities. Born of the Unmaker's vile proximity, these beasts threatened to purge the survivors before they could settle. Though few, scattered, and broken, the Forceborn rose to challenge them. Now, after seven years of battle, the broken have found new strength. They are the Hunters of the Night: The Medjai Order.

History and Culture
In the beginning, the first settlement was a victim of the night. Darkness encouraged ferocious beasts to encroach upon the humble walls; and many perished before the alarm could be raised. Though their numbers were few, it was the force sensitives among the survivors who volunteered to keep watch. Some were of the old, scattered Knights Obsidian. Some were fresh volunteers who rose to the occasion. Yet all who stood knew the hardships of survival. During the daylight hours, supplies were slim. Most proper weapons were devoted to fighting off raids by slaver and beyond. Thus, the forceborn had to rely on their innate gifts more than ever. They improvised and honed the force into a weapon against the night.
As they dutifully kept watch, the forceborn began to catalog and know the enemy. The fallen remains of beasts were not simply burned, but rather examined and exploited. From these trophies did they learn the weaknesses of their adversaries. Even their fangs and claws became tools for their midst. Each triumph had the potential to become a great boon for the whole, so much so that the successful felling of a beast became an integral part of their identity. Any gifted by the Force was welcome to keep watch alongside them. But only those who had slain a monster could consider themselves family.
Beyond this, they learned through great turmoil that fighting alone was a death sentence. Only by having one another's backs could they survive. They were as wolves, baring their fangs in defiance of the night. Thus, brotherhood became synonymous with being in their midst. As brothers and sisters, they spent seven years hunting as one. And by their many sacrifices did they become something more.
In the present day, the gathering took the name Medjai as a final defiant act against the Unmaker's brood. They adopted the name of his ancient adversary as a warning to every beast and nightmare that dares to slighter against the people: "We Hunt what goes Bump in the Night."

Hierarchy, Terms, and Roles
The Medjai Order does not focus on religious dogma or alignment in the Force. Rather, their focus is upon honing their talents so that others may be spared the horrors of the Night. To this end, their internal structure does not feature a lofty council to preside over their midst. Instead, leadership is determined by experience, mastery of the Force, and personal exploits.
As all that stands between the innocent and decimation via monstrosity, the Medjai believe that readiness is a pivotal concern. Thus, even the newest initiate is provided with the tracking, combat, and survival skills necessary to face the Expanse. During the first days on Verun, training-by-fire was commonplace as the forceborn did not have any suitable grounds for education. Now, Initiates may learn in relative safety within the newly-constructed walls of the Star Temple. All who complete their tutelage and passes their Rite of Proving graduate from the Star Temple as full-fledged Medjai Knights.
Beyond foundational instruction in the Star Temple, the Medjai have developed four schools of thought which aim to further hone an individuals talents. These specializations are each named after the beasts that the Order first toiled against:
VORNSKR: Hunters famed for slaying the most gargantuan beasts. Oftentimes referred to as the Vanguard of the Order, this role specializes in direct and aggressive engagements. In typical, Force-sect terms, here are found: Warriors, Guardians, and more.
DREXL: Hunters famed for slaying the most cunning beasts. Oftentimes referred to as the Trackers of the Order, this role specializes in ambush tactics and covert engagements. In typical terms, here are found: Shadows, Inquisitors, and more.
TUK'ATA: Hunters famed for slaying abominations of the Force. Oftentimes referred to as the Rearguard of the Order, this role specializes in exotic engagements and containment tactics. In typical terms, here are found Sorcerers, Witches, Fringe Cultures, and more.
VARACTYL: Hunters famed for the preservation of the pack. Oftentimes referred to as the Menders of the Order, this role encompasses support tactics and defensive engagements. In typical terms, here are found Healers, Alchemists, and more.

Common Phrases of the Knights
BLACK NIGHT: Following an attempt upon the Royal Family's lives by rogue elements of the Order, the Medjai Order swore fealty to the Ascendancy. This was done to both avert a devastating conflict between the two entities and to defy the chaos intended by the assailants.
STAR-CROSS CONCORDAT: A treaty signed between the Medjai Order and the Ascendancy. The terms allow the Order to recruit from the empire's citizens, study and contain any force-related relics, and recognizes all members as imperial citizens. Moreover, the Knights will be consulted regarding any matters of the Netherworld, Unmaker, or Monstrosities. In return, the Order aides the empire militarily and can be called upon to serve as supplementary law enforcement or peacekeepers within Ascendant space. All services rendered are to be compensated financially and medically if required. Note: The Star-Cross Concordat was amended following the Black Night. From thenceforth, the Medjai Order has sworn fealty to the Ascendant Throne and closely follows its directives.
RITE OF PROVING: Required for an Initiate to ascend to Medjai Knight. Typically, this consists of participating in a Hunt and scoring the final blow on a beast(s). However, since the signing of the Star-Cross Concodat, aiding in an Ascendant military operation will also fulfill the Rite.
HUNT: A mission where a beast(s) is targeted and eliminated.
NIGHT WATCH: A mission where a location(s) is defended against a beast(s).
WILD HUNT: A Hunt where knowledge, artifacts, and other boons are sought out abroad.
