My Heartbeat Sound

A warm, somber smile stretched his face as Verie appeared in the opposite doorway from Amore, stretching further still as she made the good hostess effort and was subsequently rebuffed by Jared. Chivalrous to a fault, but Dissero deeply appreciated the man's manners and gesture.

"Jared this is my fiancee Verie Lacroix. Verie, this is a very old and dear friend of mine Jared Ovmar. We met when I worked with the Fringe. He's a bit of an Archivist like myself."

It was enough information to divulge to Verie for her to know that Jared was trustworthy even despite what Force presence she might pick up from him. As Dissero rarely crossed wires between his private life and that of his more... questionable pursuits amidst the Sith, this was truly a unique meeting and crossroads in his life.

"Jared is also going to be my Best Man at the wedding, aren't you Jared?"

He lifted his mug and took a good long sip of tea, smirking over the rim at his friend.

"Very well," Verie said primly, waving away his offer of the seat and placing a hand at the small of her back and massaging her aches. "Thank you, but I'm all right. I just spent hours sitting and I'm paying for it now." She shifted her weight to one foot, then the other, until [member="Dissero"] introduced them. She strolled forward and offered a hand.

"I find it difficult to conceive of anyone being an Archivist like my fiance," Verie said with a polite smile. "But Force help the galaxy if it's true." She took her hand back and rested it under her swollen abdomen, favoring [member="Jared Ovmar"] with a more friendly smile. "Oh, are you indeed? How delighted I am to make your acquaintance."

This thought made the ex-ballerina quibble a little; she hadn't yet selected a bridal party. But that was a concern for another day.

"The pleasure is all mine." Ovmar was quick to respond, after nodding in acceptance of her refusal to sit down. Some of her feelings were bleeding into the air, after his meeting with [member="Saffron"] he started to slightly open himself up to his empathic abilities. Carefully, of course, not wanting to overstress himself and his mind.

He took another sip from his tea after taking his hand back from the shake.

That's when Di dropped the bomb on him.

A slow blink proceeded him almost choking in the tea, he was coughing, dry-heaving and Amore needed to come in for a moment to heavily pat him on the back. It was about half a minute, before Ovmar managed to get some semblance of order back into himself.

"That...." Jared shook his head and coughed again softly. "...is not how to break news like that, Di."

Through it all a smile broke though.

"But... yes, I suppose I am." He gave another nod to Verie. "Apologies, I am usually far more... composed than this."

"Mmm," said the Archivist in reply, "right up there with introducing me to a mistress and child by asking me to help rescue the latter."

He grinned at Jared over the rim of his mug of tea, chuckling as his friend choked down his drink, "Don't waste that whiskey or my mother will tan your hide when she finds out."

A sigh, Dissero glanced to his fiancee with a waning smile and lifted a hand to rub at the back of his neck, "Sorry I can't be of more assistance, friend, but if you give me an idea of how many you're expecting to go with you I'll see what I can do about equipping you with some useful things."

Verie smiled fondly at [member="Dissero"] as [member="Jared Ovmar"] gently chastised him for breaking the news in this way, but the smile died on her lips when she saw the look that he gave her, the waning smile, the sigh. She looked away quickly and looked over at Ovmar again, clamping down on her emotions in the Force. She forced a smile for her husband-to-be's friend and said, "Never mind his mother. It'll be me you need to worry about, wasting a good whiskey when I can't drink a drop. Whatever biological, evolutionary process created a reproductive system where women can't drink just when they most need one."

Verie produced a napkin from the bar and handed it to Ovmar. "Can I offer you a glass of water, perhaps? That reminds me. I should offer myself a glass of water. Hydration and all that rot," she said apologetically. She poured herself a glass of water and took a sip, staring into the clear bottom at her feet rather than up at her fiance and his family and friends.
