New guy to this part of galaxy

I posted my character in the creation section. Then went to my profile and hit character, sub account, typed my name in and hit add. It says the username is already taken.

Ah. That would explain the confusion.

Each subaccount you create is a new account. Since your root account ("writer," though you can absolutely use it to write a character with) has that name, you can't create a second account with an identical name. But you don't have to create a subaccount to RP.

So how do I link my character bio then?

-NVM!!!- I just noticed it's already there. Now I really feel stupid.

I've already done it. On your profile, next to the characters button, is a button for "edit my profile." You can link your bio on that screen.
