- Landmark Name: New Plympto Crystal Caverns
- Classification: Cave System
- Location: New Plympto
- Affiliation: N/A
- Size: Massive. The caverns stretch for thousands of meters in any direction with multiple entry points, many yet undiscovered, and the dangers within the caves themselves bring risks to further exploration.
- Population: Sparsely Populated
- Demographics: Stone Mites
- Accessibility: 8 entryways are known, though many more are predicted to exist due to the massive stretches of land between known entrances. Exploration without protective suits is limited due to the intense heat and humidity experienced the further down into the caves that an individual explores.
- Description: With entryways varying in size and ease of access, the caverns themselves are filled with massive crystal structures, often so large that they impede further exploration without destroying them. In addition, the deeper one goes, the caves become hotter and hotter, to the point where exploration without specially designed equipment can be extremely hazardous to one’s health. Adegan crystals make up the majority of the large structures, though only the kathracite, relacite, and danite strands, the much more common and less powerful kinds. Non-force attuned crystals such as selenite and gypsum are also present in large quantities.
- Rockwrath’s Sinkhole: One of the several entry points, though the most difficult to actually enter through, Rockwrath’s Sinkhole is an opening just short of two hundred meters wide, dropping deep into the planet’s crust several hundred meters before the massive crystals that the cave is known for are reached. Access from there grows more difficult as one tries to slip between the crystals as in addition to the heat a colony of stone mites call the Sinkhole home. An interesting thing to note about the Sinkhole is that for one week every year the sun passes directly over it, shining directly into the hole onto the crystals below and making it glow brightly, much like the mouth lining of Nosaurians when they ‘flash’.
- Leafstrap’s Depths: An expansive underground lake not far from the entrance located in the Hajial Chase, Leafstrap’s Depths is one of the deepest locations able to be explored comfortably before the intense heat begins making travel exceptionally difficult. A freshwater lake, it’s been speculated that water from one of the Chase’s streams flows into it through underwater rivers, and the large tree in the center stretches up through the cave’s ceiling. It’s been speculated that it continues through to the Chase itself, but the exact tree has never been found due to the expansive size of the topside woodlands.
First discovered after the planet was rendered uninhabitable by the Vong during their invasion of the galaxy, the Crystal Caverns are a massive, immeasurable cave system spanning at the very least tens of thousands of meters and possibly deeper into the planet’s crust. Entryways were marked before the Vong’s organic technology was utilized to regrow much of the planet’s flora and landscapes, and exploration attempts made as time went on. Unfortunately deep-dive exploration was hindered by a variety of factors: the caves’ extreme heat, flooding, impassable gaps in the crystals. There have been a few small groups that made it deeper than others, but then simply vanished without a trace. This has led to rumors among the locals that there are creatures lurking in the depths of the caves, abducting and eating careless explorers, but these have been passed off by most as superstitious tales meant to scare children away from the caves as no evidence of anything other than stone mites and small lizards has been found. Attempts to inspect deeper with small probe droids are in the works, with the eventual hope being to develop a comprehensive map of the cavern systems.
