Faction [NJO] Momentum and Mastery

"I don't disagree that they are," Caelan said with a small smile. "I was just surprised given who he worked for."

When the Kiffar mentioned waiting for instruction he nodded. There wasn't much to do otherwise, at least for the moment. Others were milling about and talking, some still pairing up. That was normal since not everyone knew each other within the room. Caelan knew several of those present, but he didn't know all of them and he wasn't surprised by that fact. There were a lot of Jedi in the Order. It might take him a really long time to meet them all.

Valery started speaking and he turned his attention to her to listen. As he expected, the skill was focused primarily on modification of the body, but as she explained further, it went beyond just the body: there was modification of the mind that was also necessary. Speed up the brain just as one sped up the body. It did make sense. If you sped up your movements but not your ability to process them, you'd end up in a heap on the ground somewhere, or running yourself into something.

When she finished, he turned back to Kaelos.

"Guess we try it each first and then we spar? Let me see if I can show you what I know."

He took a deep breath, drew on the Force and focused on pushing it throughout the muscles in his body. Not just there, he flooded his brain with it as well. This was an interesting sensation as he felt like he could see and feel a lot more than he normally did. Then he moved. At first it didn't seem all that quick, but then he was suddenly around behind Kaelos in the blink of an eye, standing perfectly still.

"I specialize in body modification when it comes to usage of the Force. The speeding up of my mind is new to me, but the rest comes natural. Why don't you try?"

voice of the meek and the damned

As timing would have it, Master Farr was in.

After moving the Coruscant Temple's artifact collection to Fondor for indefinite safekeeping, her main office had also moved to the new capital planet. She didn't stay there all too often through; instead, she and her team split their time between Fondor, Eiattu 6, Woostri, and various other GA or neutral worlds like Ruusan or New Cov.

The curator of this temple's museum was in the middle of giving her a private tour when Connel walked in. Efret didn't notice him by herself, as her back as well as the local curator's back was to him, but Nirrah straightened and turned her head almost a full 180 degrees to regard the Shadow.

Efret, then, saw him too. "Connel." Her greeting came before she straightened and turned around herself. Though the voice of her interpretation unit was, as always, rather monotone, her own smile was wide, her eyes glistening. She crossed the distance that separated them and stood on the tips of her toes to give the man more than a foot taller than her a quick hug. "How's your throat? Has the turmeric tea I recommended been helping you?" Hopefully, it was cutting down on his inflammation.

After asking, she detached her wristpad from her arm and offered it to him so that he could type out his answer.

And after that, she was more than happy to receive his deliveries, but a little less happy to see him on his way. He should be resting, not tracking down more black market leads.

Careful, Connel, she thought in Sign as he walked off.

Tracyn appeared- appeared, being the term, because he moved so quickly. He was however, very smooth with it. He looked more as if he was walking- rather than running. Bounding, long strides.

He was standing next to Ben Khal Ben Khal . He took a deep breath, enjoying the scenery.

"Walking, running. It comes so naturally to us that we forget how to do it on command when we need to. Heel, toe, son. Heel, toe. Think about that next time you're moving. You aren't just running. You have to think about where your next four footfalls will be- and then. Then you can move fast. See- it isn't about the speed. The speed will come. Just trust the Force. But-"

He wiggled a finger at him, his back turned.

"Don't forget, heel-toe. Heel-toe."

And then, he moved again, to his compatriot, another Padawan- one Vera Noble Vera Noble .

"I fell down much more than you did." He said with a smile, trying to remember the first time. "It was my wife who taught me how to do this, you know. She said not to run, but to move." He looked back out towards her friend, Ben. "And just to mind your feet. I'll tell you what I told him, hm?" He said, running a hand along his cleanly-shaven face.

"Think about where you'll be not in the next step, but in the next four. The Force guides you, when you do this. You have to trust it. Pull it into you. Let it flow through your body, your joints, tendons, muscles. Everything. You have to believe in it, as much as yourself. It'll get easier."

He gestured to Ben on the hill.

"Try again, Miss Noble."

There she is!

He was happy to see that she wasn’t putting herself into the middle of some battlefield, just being protective is all. Of course as she asked him about his throat, he could not openly speak at the moment, so all the Shadow could do was scrunch his face and wiggle his hand back and forth as if to say “Meh” when asked about the tea. It was sweet enough of her to think of him in that regard, but it was a professional concern.

When she offered the circuit board, he hit a flurry of thumb movements, entering the words “It’s not getting any worse, so there is that.”

~I’ll try!~

“Try”... well there’s that.

He was indeed a “Vanagor”.

The moment Ben reappeared at the top of the hill, Vera threw her hands up in the air with a loud, triumphant "Woo!" Her grin was wide, bright, and full of excitement. "There you go!" she called, hands cupping around her mouth. "Told you you'd get it!"

And then — Tracyn Ordo Tracyn Ordo .

The way he appeared next to Ben nearly made her jump. One second, she was watching her fellow Padawan, the next, boom, he was right there.

She listened, nodding along as he spoke, absorbing every word with that same boundless energy. The way he explained it — move, don't run think ahead, not just in the moment — it clicked in a way that made her bounce on her feet. "Okay, yeah, I got this," she grinned, rolling her shoulders as she turned toward Ben again.

Time to do it properly.

Vera inhaled deeply, feeling the Force thrum through her veins, and this time, she channeled it. Not just reaching for it in the moment, but letting it guide her. She thought ahead, four steps ahead, just like Tracyn had said. And then, in the next heartbeat — she moved.

The world blurred around her, wind whipping at her clothes and through her wild hair, but this time, there was no stumbling, no tripping. She surged forward, closing the distance between herself and Ben in an instant, her boots kicking up dirt as she came to a smooth stop near him.

She brushed her hair out of her face, her grin downright beaming.

"Okay, that was cool."

With a quick stretch, she turned to him fully, her multicolored eyes shining. "So, what do you think?" she asked, flashing a playful smirk. "You ready to try and use it in a spar?"

Ben shot a look at Tracyn Ordo Tracyn Ordo . Not only had his Knight appeared out of nowhere and just started giving them orders, he was a man. It was not his place to teach them.

"So, what do you think?" she asked, flashing a playful smirk. "You ready to try and use it in a spar?"

His gaze flicked toward Vera. "It is a useful skill," he said. "A little hard to get going when I'm in a calm state, but I think I got the hang of it." But now they were expected to use it in a spar. The idea struck him as dangerous, especially since they were just beginning to learn control. If someone got punched in the head at super speed, for instance, it could prove fatal.

Then again, the Jedi Order regularly sent teenagers into warzones. This was comparatively mild danger.

"Ready when you are," he replied, moving into position across from Vera.

The silence was fairly awkward.

Everyone else was milling about and talking whilst waiting for further guidance. They clearly had some history or knowledge of each other than Caelan and he just didn't have. They'd never met and now they were about to be sparring and fighting each other.

When the Grandmaster began to talk, Kaelos joined Caelan in turning to listen to what she had to say. She described Force Speed well, adding a warning that not only would the body be sped up but the mind would also have to be sped up in order to keep up with the speed the body was moving.

Caelan suggested trying it first prior to sparring and he agreed with that. It'd be quite awkward to spar against each other if neither of them could actually grasp the concept of Force Speed. Everyone else around them would be moving quicker than the eye could see and they'd just be slowly fist fighting.

Kaelos closed his eyes, allowing the Force to flood into his body. His focus went to directing it to where he wanted it, his left arm. He then moved his arm and watched as it moved quicker than he could process from by his side to in the air. It was interesting feeling, partly because he was doing it without flooding his mind also.

So he allowed the Force to flood into his mind, as well as his arm. He allowed the Force to guide him. He lowered his arm at what felt like a normal speed but was actually quicker than any normal species would be able to process. It was interesting to be able to process everything going on around him so much much quicker.

"Even just speeding up one's mind, that's a useful skill. Never mind the actual speed that comes with it" he commented. He hadn't actually yet succeeding in moving anywhere, unlike Caelan he wasn't a natural at body modification force powers so he liked to take things slowly.

He focused on pushing the Force throughout both body and mind in much the same way he had previously, except this time instead of focusing on a single body part he allowed the Force to flood every muscle and blood vessel he had. He walked at what felt like a normal pace to circle the Jedi Padawan whom he had partnered with, not realising just how quickly he was actually moving.

"Feels like I'm just doing everything normally. I can only assume I'm not?"

rhXV2kO.png

Caelan watched as Kaelos tested out what they were being taught. At first it seemed like he was just going to test it on one extremity. Sure enough, that limb moved rather quickly. He could understand wanting to take things slowly at first when you didn't have experience with the skill or similar skills. It prevented you from rushing into something and potentially injuring yourself or someone else. Just the mental aspect of it was quite invigorating, as Kaelos noted.

"It's something else to be able to think and process that quickly," he agreed.

The young man then seemed to focus on trying the actual task at hand, moving the whole body. Given their proximity, Caelan could feel him drawing on the Force and flooding his body with it. Then he moved, and rather rapidly at that. It was very interesting to have the perspective of someone watching someone move at high speed. One second the Kiffar was in one spot, the next he was in an entirerly different spot altogether. Given the words he spoke, he seemed to understand that, but he also wanted confirmation.

"No, you're moving rapidly. Difficult to keep up with, actually. It's interesting to watch from the perspective of someone not using the same ability."

He flooded himself with the Force and started moving swiftly as well.

"How about now? Does it appear that I'm just walking, to you since we're both doing it at the same time?"

Vera bounced on her heels, her grin practically stretching from ear to ear as Ben took his stance. Ready when you are.

"Oh, you are so gonna regret that," she teased, flashing him a wink.

And then, she moved.

The Force surged through her, her body responding in perfect harmony with the energy thrumming in her veins. The world blurred, her form flickering like a mirage as she closed the distance between them in an instant. The wind kicked up in her wake, whipping through the training grounds, but her mind stayed sharp — focused.

She wasn't here to bowl Ben over with raw speed alone. This was practice. Control.

So instead of a wild, reckless attack, she went for something clean. Fluid. Her saber ignited mid-stride, its emerald light streaking through the air as she swung — deliberate, telegraphed. A horizontal slash, just enough to test his reaction time, see if he could track her movement and counter in time.

"Think fast!" she called, mischief dancing in her eyes.

She had no intention of actually hitting him, of course. The moment her saber neared him, she was already adjusting, prepared to pull back or shift if needed. But the fun of it? The thrill? Oh, that was real.

This was gonna be so good.

Azzie was being so helpful, and for all of her natural intensity, she was really very lovely. Though nervous from the prospect of trying to learn something new in front of so many people, new or otherwise, her newfound 'Padawan-Sister' was making her feel a little more at ease. She was funny, and charming, and her intentional attempt to lighten her mood made a shy smile come to Eve.

The demonstration was impressive. She hadn't seen anyone do Force Speed up close before, and she tried her best to remember exactly what she said before whipping round the hedge so expertly. Focus the energy on the feet... Reach within... She could do that well enough. Taking control of her breathing, she closed her eyes for a moment and reached out for that spark of Light that fizzed gently at the core of her being; that warming guide that had set her on her path. Then with gentle encouragement, she allowed her awareness to naturally draw down to her feet. She could feel a warmth stir around her legs as her physical body seemed to react to the focus of her aura self.

Then she stepped— no, she leapt.

The lights about her bent and warped in a way that reminded her of hyperspace travel. It certainly made her stomach react as if it was hyperspace travel. But behind that strange sudden shock of intense speed, she felt... amazing. What freedom! What control! What speed! She had never felt like this before. She had never moved at such a wild speed before and it was the most magical, most freeing thing she had ever felt. She felt on top of the world. On top of the galaxy!

Then her face planted straight down onto the grass.

A tiny, muffled squeak came from her.

"eek~"

She ached, her face especially which was now covered in dirt. But as she pushed herself back up to her feet, she didn't cry, she didn't blush, she didn't try to run away. Instead, Eve did something entirely unexpected of herself.

She laughed.

In fact, she bellowed, as the delayed adrenaline of the moment kicked into overdrive.

"Oh! Let's do it again!"

She looked at Azzie, and a mischievous grin formed across her face.

The process of speeding up the mind was more interesting than speeding up the body.

Caelan had explained that despite just how normal everything felt, he was actually moving so much faster than usual. His brain was being sped up by the Force just as his body was, allowing him to process everything like nothing had changed.

Almost as if they were conducting a science experiment, Caelan sped himself up. Both men were moving quicker than the eye of most species would be able to process, yet Kaelos wouldn't have been able to tell. They were both just acting as if everything was normal.

"Completely normal" he confirmed with a nod, which to anyone else would have looked capable of giving him whiplash. "Because we're thinking and processing so fast, I assume we just see our own speed as normal whereas everyone else not moving this quickly and moving normally looks extremely slow" he acknowledged, gesturing around him as if to prove a point.

"Wonder what happens if you don't speed up the mind?" he questioned. He stopped flooding his brain with the Force and just kept it flowing through his body and within seconds was flat on his face. He took a second to pull himself together before he got back to his feet and dusted himself off.

"Definitely speed your mind up" he laughed. "I don't think any brain can process moving that quickly and it's extremely, extremely disorientating" he confirmed, continuing to dust himself off. "Luckily the dirt here is a soft landing"

Casting his eyes over to Caelan he smiled.

"I suppose if we spar, to us it'll feel normal right? It'll just like a blur to everyone else?"

"Oh, you are so gonna regret that.”

Ben stared at her for a moment, until he caught her wink. Right. She was just teasing—

She shot forward like a rocket, her body a blur as she sped toward him. Displaced air rushed around her in the form of wind, and her feet kicked up a cloud of dust with every hastened step. Her lightsaber ignited mid-stride, the green blade arcing toward him.

All of this happened in the span of less than a second. Ben was only able to see it because of his connection to the Force. It altered his perception, slowing her down while the world around them appeared frozen in time. Like the moment when the troops opened fire on the villagers, it was as if the rain fell more slowly around him—

"Think fast!" she called, mischief dancing in her eyes.

They were only practicing, he reminded himself. This wasn’t a real fight. Vera was playing with him like a child, pretending at war. She was still a child.

Am I still a child too?

His yellow blade ignited and parried hers. The impact sent shockwaves up his arms. In speeder crashes, the vehicle that receives the most damage is the slower or stationary one. She was an unstoppable force, he was an immovable object.

Until he moved. Like her, he enhanced his speed, moving like a bolt from a blaster past her. He turned his body as he did, swinging his blade diagonally across her back. It was set to the lowest intensity, sure to leave only a welt if it struck. But Ben was taking this far more seriously than she seemed to be. There was no playfulness in his actions, no enjoyment in the thrill of the fight. He was trying to dispatch her as quickly and efficiently as possible, as if he just wanted to get this part of the lesson over with.

rhXV2kO.png

Completely normal. Confirmed his theory, then. Seemed when they both sped up they were moving as if normal and everything around them was slower. He wondered if that was how some really fast bugs and birds saw everything around them. Maybe that was how they were able to maneuver so swiftly through trees and plants without colliding with anything. Kind of impressive, really.

And then Kaelos did something crazy and didn't speed up his mind, which is exactly what Grandmaster Noble told them NOT to do. And, of course, the predictable outcome happened. Caelan couldn't help but wince as he watched. That had to hurt and he was glad he wasn't the one that had done it. Rubbing his face in the dirt like that didn't seem all that appealing. Probably hurt like hades. But he just shook his head as the boy picked himself up and dusted himself off as if it was no big deal.

"I imagine that unless we were standing still, we wouldn't be seen by most people," he said as he went and grabbed a couple of training sabers before tossing one to the Kiffar. "But we were told to use it in spurts, not constantly. I imagine we don't want to tire ourselves too much."

He thumbed the activation switch and a yellow blade sprang forth. The hilt was lighter than his lightsaber, but that was alright. Lighter meant he just needed to slow his normal actions down a little. Which, actually might be hard since the whole point of all of this was to speed themselves up.

"If you're ready, feel free to attack first."

The humidity of New Cov was a very welcome change of scenery. After learning of the upcoming class, he had followed the other along and observed.

Only, he recognized someone. The blind kid, his sister's old Padawan, Aadihr Lidos Aadihr Lidos - except they were an adult now. Taller than Jo'Han expected them to grow. Filled out nicely too, all things considered. It was weird to see the thin Padawan now 'watching' over others as a Knight, but Luka certainly knew how to whip someone into shape, so he shouldn't be surprised.

Jo'Han had half a mind to pressure the other Knight into training with him, but his disappearance... Maybe it would be best to let the knight be. He had only heard about what Luka had been doing afterwards. Perhaps another, then. After the Grandmaster's next instruction, maybe.

The moment Ben parried her strike, Vera felt it — the weight of his blade, the tension behind his form, the way he didn't play back. This wasn't just fun sparring for him. Vera's grin faltered, but only for a fraction of a second before she adjusted. Alright then. If he wanted to take this seriously, she could meet him there.

His counterattack was fast. Faster than she had expected.

The golden blade cut through the air toward her back, and instinct screamed at her to move. Her body reacted before she could think — Force twisting through her muscles as she pivoted, ducking just enough that his strike skimmed through the space where she had been a breath ago. Her emerald saber flared as she turned back to him, deflecting his next strike with a sharp crack of energy.

Then, the real fight began.

They exchanged blows in a blur of movement, emerald and gold clashing in sharp, precise arcs. Vera adjusted quickly, her footwork light, her stance shifting between offense and defense with practiced ease. But Ben was different — his movements weren't just precise, they were efficient. He wanted to end this. And maybe that was why, just for a second, she pushed herself harder — pressed back against his blade with a little more force, let herself match his intensity rather than just teasing and dancing around him.

Then, she made her next move.

Vera widened the distance between them, just for a moment, just enough to create an opening... and then she surged forward again, closing the space between them in an instant. But this time, something went wrong. Her foot caught an uneven patch of ground, the momentum she had built betraying her in an instant. She barely had time to register the shift before her body lurched forward — directly toward Ben.

"Ah—!"

Vera crashed forward, her weight tumbling straight towards Ben in what would likely knock them both down to the ground if he didn't evade her embarrassing fall.

Vera dodged with Force-enhanced speed, her body twisting around to counterattack. It didn't take long for her to realize his approach, and rather than continuing to play with him—a tactic which might've eventually frustrated and flummoxed him to the point of making a mistake—she matched his precision and efficiency.

She wanted to win. He wanted to survive.

Sometimes Ben didn't feel like he was really here. Instead he felt like he was back there, on Hapes, dueling Drystan Creed Drystan Creed in the middle of a muddy, rainy field. The boy didn't understand what was happening to him, wasn't even fully consciously aware of it as memories of the battle flashed in his brain like thunderclaps. He kept fighting desperately, reliant on muscle memory and training even as he began to lose his grasp on reality.

Vera stepped back. It was a momentary reprieve. Ben started to come back to himself, blinking and panting. Then, she lunged... only to lose control over her momentum, tripping yet again.

Had he been any other Padawan, he might've taken advantage of her slip and finished her off. But Ben's mind went blank. He was suddenly frightened of himself. This was a girl he was fighting, not a boy. Not Drystan, not Oukranos. He wasn't supposed to—

She crashed into him, knocking him over. He fell backwards on the grass, the soft earth cushioning the impact. Her weight still knocked the breath from his lungs, leaving him gasping for air. "Are you alri—" he tried to ask, only to break into a raspy cough.

His fingers closed around the training saber that was tossed towards him.

Already exhausted from constantly testing the limits of Force Speed and how speeding up one's mind worked, he was now about to spar with someone who was likely a much better duelist than he was. He took a few seconds to feel the weight of the training saber and noted it's lightness compared to most other lightsabers he'd touched.

Caelan Valoren Caelan Valoren invited him to attack first and he nodded. His thumb activated the training weapon, the blade of yellow plasma shooting from the metallic cylinder in the grasp of the Kiffar. He took a few seconds to give it a minor twirl before he cast his eyes towards his sparring partner.

"Is now a good time to admit I haven't done a lot of lightsaber practice?" he acknowleged with a nervous chuckle. He'd had a very brief introduction to Shii-Cho whilst on Courscant but other than that, he was just going to swing and hope he hit a target.

He pushed the Force through him, into his mind and into every muscle within his body. He was smaller and lighter than his foe and he was hoping that meant he could move quicker than his opponent, especially when aided by the Force.

Moving quicker than his eyes would otherwise be able to process, he aimed a slash towards his opponent.

rhXV2kO.png

"Well, better to admit it now than later," Caelan said with a smile. "I won't go hard on you. It's about practice, after all."

He assumed a defensive stance. As soon as he felt the boy push the Force through his body, he did the same so that he could keep up with Kaelos' movements. If he didn't, he'd be hurting for it. At least it would only be a sting and he wasn't going to lose an arm or something. Save for that when he was fighting someone on Woostri!

When Kaelos came in with a slash, he brought his blade up in a block, catching the blade aimed at him rather than parrying it away. If this were a true fight in which he were aiming to win, he'd have parried and countered. But since Kaelos admitted he didn't have much combat experience, Caelan though it best that help to teach his fellow padawan what he had learned over the course of his training as a padawan, considering he'd been in several battles already.

"Not bad. Try again, but try and be a little more unpredictable. Use feints in combo with actual attacks."

Garric was watching as the students were getting on with learning force speed rather well. Soon, he turned towards a sparring session between Ben Khal and Vera Noble. He got interested in their little match. It started seemingly light, friends sparring it out. But then he turned his attention to Ben and noticed he was treating the situation more seriously than he needed to. At first, Garric figured that might just be how the young man was, but he could feel something off.

For the short time the spar had lasted, the young man appeared to space out, as if he began to think he was doing this exact thing somewhere else. The young lady lunged at the boy but tripped and crashed right into her sparring partner. The old man sat for a moment in thought before putting a mental pin in it. He may speak with the padawan after the session is over.

For now, he turned his attention to the Grandmaster in front of him and struck up a conversation.

"They seem to be picking up on this rather well... more or less. A couple of hiccups but they seem to be getting it, wouldn't you say?"

Azzie watched Everest launch herself across the open grounds, an eager burst of energy that seemed to collide with gravity and defy the rules of motion. For a moment, Azzie felt a swell of excitement for her. She was doing pretty dang good given it was her first try. But then, just as quickly, there was a thud, followed by an alarming squeak and a full faceplant into the grass. Azzie's violet eyes flicked with a few conflicting thoughts, her lips twitching. Her hand hovered instinctively, unsure whether she should rush over or just give Eve a moment to recover. The last thing she wanted to do was make her feel awkward, especially in front of everyone.

She eventually moved over and extended a hand, half-expecting the other to hesitate, maybe even look a little embarrassed. Eve, however, seemed to have no shame about it at all. As she pushed herself up, covered in dirt but somehow still beaming, Azzie couldn't help but feel a little relieved. Then came the laughter—a full, wholehearted laugh that had her grinning despite herself.

Azzie smirked, brushing a bit of dirt off Eve's sleeve. "Clearly, the ground just wanted to get a closer look at you. Who am I to argue?" She teased with a playful elbow jab at her arm.

"Oh! Let's do it again!"

"How about we make a little challenge out of it, shall we?" She started once the younger padawan had gotten her bearings back, her own mischievous energy being fed by that of Eve's beginning to show itself. "Last one to that bush and back owes the other lunch? Sounds like some good stakes to me."

Azzie stretched her legs back, taking a position ready to bolt at any moment. "I'll even let you have the countdown honors."
